Summer is quickly approaching, and soon the final school bells will sound, pool
covers will be drawn back, sunglasses will go on and students everywhere will
feel the overwhelming pressure of summer reading assignments. Long has required
reading during summer vacation been a hallmark of the American education system.
However, as many people know, most students are typically reluctant to read for
class during the year, let alone during their breaks. Often, students protest to
summer assignments in hopes of reducing the requirements or, more extremely,
abolishing the summer reading program altogether. In an age where students are
directing their attention more to the screen and less to the page, a question
arises: Should schools require summer reading?







Many claim that yes, summer assignments should be required, even necessary, in
order to prevent a phenomenon known as "summer slide." According to the National
Summer Learning Association, a summer slide occurs when students, especially
low-income students, lose academic skills over the summer. The association
reports that students typically lose anywhere between two and three months of
reading skills while on break. Requiring students to participate in a summer
reading program will supposedly combat this slide, and help to improve students'
reading ability.







Summer learning is important for the success of a student. However, summer
reading is typically only enjoyable for one group of students: those who enjoy
reading. All to often does a student say "I'm just not a book person," or "I
hate reading books." Even those who enjoy reading often times are reluctant to
dive into prescribed books. Requiring disinterested students to read anywhere
from two to three books per summer is comparable to demanding that someone who
passionately dislikes classical music to listen to two or three of Beethoven's
symphonies. How, then, can summer language arts assignments effectively reach
all students?







The aim of summer reading is ultimately to both prescribe a cultural
confrontation through literature, and demand some form of analysis in response.
In an article for Time magazine, Charlotte Alter reported that as children get
older they read less and less for pleasure, following a steady decrease over the
past 30 years. As attention has clearly shifted away from literature, interested
educators can hope to turn to the new "center of attention" for ideas on how to
re-vamp summer homework.

Television shows and movies, both broadcast and streamed, have most likely
become the new center of attention for students. With more free time in the
summer months, students are more inclined to kick back, relax and power through
five seasons of "Breaking Bad." The rising binge-watching culture is not all
bad, however, as one New York Times writer claims that watching a streamed
series is "more like reading a book." Complete with culturally relevant themes,
character development, plot, conflict, exposition, climax and resolution,
analyzing a television series or film can yield the same kind of response
teachers seek from current summer reading activities.







Summer vacation should be a time for students to unwind after a long year of
school work and testing. Some students enjoy picking up a book that interests
them, sitting in their favorite spot and reading for hours. Others prefer to
curl up on the couch, turn on the TV and stream the next season of their
favorite show. Regardless of how our students prefer to spend their summers, it
is time for the definition of "summer reading" to be expanded to include their
interests and strengths. Both turning the page, and turning the channel can keep
students engaged and educated during the summer months.

We all are scared of something. Some people are scared of the ocean, others of
spiders or snakes. For me, it's the unknown. I don't like uncertainty nor do I
like being blindsided. Due to this, my biggest fear in life was death.



I had a pretty good life growing up. I grew up in a home with two parents,
siblings, food on my plate and a roof over my head. That all changed at the age
of 12. My life itself didn't change, but the innocence in my life was gone. For
the first time in my life, I lost somebody I loved. In June of 2010, my
great-grandma passed away. I remember that the idea of never seeing her again
seemed foreign to me. It didn't seem real, that she had really left us and gone
to be with the Lord.







Since then, I have lost 12 loved ones. It seemed as though they were all falling
like dominos. I'd like to say with each one it got easier, but it didn't. It
just hurt differently every time. They were all hard in their own way, but the
one that shook me the most spiritually was my great-aunt in January of 2015.







She was only 53 years old, and I just wasn't ready. I know the truth is that
you're never ready, but with this one I can genuinely say that I was not ready
physically, emotionally or spiritually. Physically I was exhausted; the newness
of college as well as everything that came along with that wore me out.
Emotionally, I was trying to find myself. I had just figured out what I wanted
to do in life, and I was trying to understand what that meant for me. I was
making a bunch of new friends and wondering about the impact that they would all
make on my life. Spiritually, I was doubting the God more than I had ever before
in my life.







I knew I couldn't survive like this. I was lost and I knew what I had to do in
order to be found. I knew I needed the Lord now more than ever, but I didn't now
where exactly to find him. On January 24, 2015 I rededicated my life to him. I
was scrolling through Twitter and I saw a link to Pastor Brian Houston's message
at the Hillsong Church that Sunday in Australia. I had the urge to sit and watch
the live stream, and at the end he made an announcement that those who were lost
and didn't know how to be found had the answer was right in front of them. I
said the prayer and suddenly realized that I wasn't alone. I knew the days ahead
weren't going to be easy, but I knew I wasn't alone.







Fast forward a year and some months, and here we are. Physically, spiritually,
and emotionally I felt as though I was as strong as ever. Last year in
September, I picked up a copy of Levi Lusko's "Through the Eyes of a Lion" after
hearing his story at a large evangelical event called the Harvest Crusade in
Anaheim, California. The school year came and went and I didn't have a chance to
read it. Last Sunday, as I was unpacking the things from my dorm I picked up the
book and began reading.







As I read, I realized that I had never thought about death again. I took the out
of sight, out of mind route. In the book, Lusko shares about his experience of
losing his daughter and the way in which that changed his view on eternity.
Eternity is something that exists and as believers we know we will be there
someday, but we are never really striving for it. Life on earth is only a
snippet of the time that we will be in heaven.

Through his story and the tale of his fearless, loving, compassionate daughter,
I found the way to excite in death here on earth. What a beauty it is that there
is hope beyond this broken world, and that God loved all of us enough to send
his Son to give us the hope of Sunday!







I have committed to living the life of a fearless lion, anchored in God. Knowing
that anything that I go through, my God has already overcome.

If you're feeling lost, just know you're not alone. If you have just lost a
loved one, know that the days do get easier. And if you're feeling restless,
know that a beautiful Sunday is on its way.

It was recently in the news that the NY Yankees do not provide free wifi for
their players on away game flights!!! That's earth shattering news because teams
usually charter flights for their players, coaches, and support staff. These
flights are typically equipped with amenities such as Wi-Fi, comfortable
seating, and in-flight entertainment.



To estimate the cost of Wi-Fi for a baseball team during their charter flights
throughout an entire season, we need to consider several factors:

 1. Number of games per season
 2. Number of away games
 3. Average flight duration
 4. Cost of Wi-Fi per flight hour

In a regular MLB season, each team plays 162 games, with half of those being
away games. So, a team would have 81 away games. However, not all away games
require flights. Some games are played against nearby teams, and the team might
travel by bus or train. To account for this, let's assume that 70% of the away
games require flights. That's approximately 57 flights (rounding up). Since
teams often play multiple games in a series against the same opponent, they
don't need to travel between every away game. To factor this in, let's assume
that they take a flight for every 3 away games. This results in 19 flights (57
away games / 3). Now let's estimate the average flight duration. Flight times
can vary greatly depending on the distance between cities. In the United States,
an average flight time can range from 1 to 6 hours. For this calculation, we'll
assume an average flight duration of 3 hours.







As for the cost of Wi-Fi, it can also vary depending on the provider and the
specific package the team has. For this estimation, we'll assume a cost of $25
per hour per person. Assuming a traveling party of 40 people (including players,
coaches, and support staff), the cost of Wi-Fi per flight hour would be $1,000
(40 people x $25). Now, we can calculate the total cost of Wi-Fi for the entire
season:







Total cost = (Number of flights) x (Average flight duration) x (Cost of Wi-Fi
per flight hour) Total cost = 19 flights x 3 hours x $1,000 Total cost = $57,000

The Yankees are a franchise worth 6 Billion, but they make their players pay $9
for wifi. To which the fans said: "we could care less, those millionaires have
to pay $9 and that hurts?"

It was a Saturday night. We had nothing else to do besides be with one another.
We were normally always in your bedroom watching television and talking about
random topics that popped into our little brains. The only difference was, that
Saturday night was nothing like the rest.



We were laying in your comfy bed as you were singing to me in one thousand
different passions and singing from your spirit. You were kissing me, hugging
me, and showed a bunch of compassion that night. We didn't sleep for even a
second. It was snowing outside our house.







Eventually, we made our way to the side of the bed, suddenly sitting there
watching the snowflakes come down onto the window seal. A bright thought came to
your beautiful mind and you opened the window. You grabbed my hand and stuck it
out the opening of the window and said to me, "Open your palm, every snowflake
you catch is a reminder of every reason I love you."







I opened my palm and thought to myself, "I want to catch each one." Of course I
couldn't, but I most certainly tried as hard as it was physically possible.
After a few minutes, you pulled my hand inside and rubbed the performance that
the snowflake had given. I asked, "Why would you do that?" Your response was,
"Look outside baby, there isn't enough snowflakes in the world for me to explain
how much I love you, there isn't enough rain or sunshine or even seconds to
explain how much I love you, and every reason of why I do."

I closed my eyes and smiled at you. I didn't know what to say. I was astonished,
and filled with joy. All I could do was continue to hold your hand, so I laid my
head on your shoulders and we looked out the opening of the window in silence.
After 20 minutes or so, I lifted my head and pulled yours to the side so it was
facing mine. I told you to look into my eyes, you did of course. "I'm deeply in
love with you, and my only desire in this universe is to marry you," I told you.







I want you to know that since the day we met, I have fallen deeply in love with
you. There are no words to express the feeling I feel in my heart that day you
came into my life, and how you make every day so special. You are my life, my
heart, my soul. You are my best friend, my one true love, my one and only. I
love you more today than I did yesterday, and I’ll love you more tomorrow than I
do today. Loving you is the only thing that makes life worth living.







Day by day, my love for you becomes overwhelming, and I can’t handle it when I
don’t see or even talk to you every day. A day without you in my life is like a
day without sunshine, a day without food, or a day without air. I need you when
I’m cold to keep me warm; I need you in the rain to keep me dry; I need you in
my life to keep me happy. You make me feel wonderful. You give me strength when
I just can’t carry on and I truly treasure that. Every moment spent together is
another one of my dreams coming true.

Dear Grandpa,



The first thing I want to say is that I miss you with all my heart, forever and
always. I never stop thinking about you or the memories we had made.


They say that the loss of a loved one often changes someone's life. I'd like to
agree.







I hate that I had to lose you at such a young age. I am old enough to remember
your smell, and remember how contagious your laugh was; that always made us
think you were up to something suspicious. But I was too young for you to get to
know the real me. I'm still trying to figure that out who that is.


I wish you could have been at my college graduation. I know that you would be
cheering louder than anyone when they called my name to walk across the stage
and receive my diploma. But I know you'll be watching from up above with all of
my other past relatives cheering me on, as I continue on this journey.







I wish that you would be there when I say "I Do" at my wedding ceremony some
day. I wish that you could meet my future husband and approve of him (it would
mean a lot coming from you because you were so protective of me) and then maybe
scare him a little. I wish you could be sitting in the church as I give my vows
and promise to love my future husband as deeply as you loved me and our entire
family.

I wish that you were around to hear that we still talk about you. We all still
laugh about stories from vacations and how you would get mad if someone took
your seat at the dinner table on Christmas.I wish you could hear us all trying
to impersonate the way you laugh or how sarcastic you liked to be. I wish I
could hug you one last time because you gave the warmest hugs every time I every
need a pick-me-up or just because hugs are better than words.








I wish I took more pictures with you. I wish smartphones were a thing when you
were still here, so I could have had videos of your voice with me always. I
barely have any pictures with you and now it's too late and i regret it. But i
will always cherish the one that we have together.


I want you to know that I miss you so much and I wish you could be around to see
the woman I became. Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I wish
heaven had visiting hours. I miss you so much, but I know you would be proud of
me.







If Heaven wasn't so far away I'd be there everyday.
