UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE AND SUSTAINABLE ELECTRICITY IS CRUCIAL
FOR AFRICA’S FUTURE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Africa is a continent in continuous transformation, with a sustained economic
and population growth, a fast-paced urbanization and a young generation of
talents who is leading its business revolution. This transformation requires
energy and will require it even more in the next decades.

DESPITE AFRICA’S GREAT CLEAN ENERGY POTENTIAL, ONLY A TINY FRACTION OF THE
WORLD’S RENEWABLES IS INSTALLED HERE.

The African continent simply cannot afford any more investment in the dirty and
fragile economy of the past, the same economy that brought our climate on the
verge of collapse and left our societies so vulnerable. Today, we’re at a
turning point. The recovery plans are the once-in-history push to radically
change direction and clean energy is the only way to go to bring Africa straight
into the sustainable era, to make its economy more resilient and to finally
build back a better future.

We envision the sustainable transformation of Africa’s electricity systems to
ensure reliable and affordable electricity access for all. Our mission is to
work towards creating favourable conditions for scaling up investments in clean
energy technologies in Africa, with Africa, for Africa.

MESSAGES OF THE MONTH

SECRETARY GENERAL’S EDITORIAL

Roberto Vigotti, Secretary General at RES4Africa Foundation

African youth and climate change: a matter of representation

> Africa’s population is the youngest and fastest-growing in the world: almost
> 60% of it is under 25, and it’s expected to double by 2050. This piece of
> information brings to the table numerous questions: will it be a resource or a
> challenge? How is such an increase going to impact our productive models? Will
> the African countries create enough opportunities and services for their
> newcomers?
>
> There is, however, a question so urgent that it overshadows all the others:
> which Africa will climate change bequeath to the young generations? Addressing
> this doubt is one of the most compelling challenges of our century, a
> challenge with strong practical and ethical nuances. Read More

OUR PARTNER’S OPINION

Francesca Secondari, Cairo based partner, member of Africa Team and ESG Practice
of BonelliErede

The impact of the proposed directive on corporate sustainability due diligence
on companies that operate on the African continent

> On 23 February 2022, the European Commission issued a proposal for a directive
> on corporate sustainability due diligence. The proposal is currently under
> review by the European legislator and focuses on the introduction of an
> EU-wide framework on corporate due diligence regarding environmental, social
> and governance (“ESG”) matters (“Proposed Directive”).
>
> The Proposed Directive − through positive obligations that aim to change the
> current regulatory framework on ESG matters that to date has mainly concerned,
> at European level, obligations regarding the disclosure of information −
> proposes introducing a regulation likely to impact the strategic, dynamic and
> business choices not only of economic operators on the European continent but
> also of companies that do business with the companies targeted by the Proposed
> Directive, with a potential global impact on business models and competitive
> logics.  Read more
