Energy is essential to the smooth operation of any business - this does not mean companies should overpay for gas and electricity. Despite being a little more complicated than domestic switching, the business energy market has become much more accessible when finding cheaper business energy deals. Despite the turbulent energy market, business owners have switched their mindsets to energy efficiency and finding business energy deals at manageable costs before the wholesale market increases. On average, our business energy customers save up to £1,067 on their renewal. We do this through a long history of commercial relationships built with some of the UK’s top business energy suppliers so that Energy Helpline customers can switch with confidence. You can compare a range of business energy prices from our panel of trusted suppliers in just 60 seconds. There’s no obligation to switch with us. GET A BUSINESS ENERGY QUOTE IN MINUTES 1 Enter your business address and smart data will find your gas and electricity meter details. 2 View business energy prices online and select your deal. 3 If you decide to switch, we take care of all the hard work. HOW MUCH DOES BUSINESS ENERGY COST? As every business is unique, getting a true picture of how much your business energy bills should be is quite difficult. Business energy suppliers will charge different rates based on a variety of factors including location, consumption levels and even industry. However, every quarter the UK Government release averages for business gas and electricity prices by size in the UK. Here are the latest figures available from Q4 of 2021. Business Size Gas Prices per kWh Electricity Prices per kWh Very Small 5.34p 18.84p Small 3.95p 18.89p Medium 4.51p 17.22p Large 3.69p 17.44p Very Large 4.11p 17.22p Average 4.18p 17.73p CONSIDERATIONS WHEN SWITCH BUSINESS ENERGY SUPPLIER Switching business energy is different from domestic switches. This means that business energy suppliers do not offer dual fuel deals. UK companies must switch their gas and electricity separately - there are several benefits to this but it does mean extra admin and renewal dates to remember. Many of our customers switch their gas and electricity at the same time and fix the rates for the same number of years. This is a way to streamline the process to make things a little easier - we also take care of all the admin on the business’s behalf when they switch through our comparison service. Our expert energy team will keep you updated on the progress of your switch via our online tracker. Ready to compare business energy prices? Click here to start saving today. HOW ARE BUSINESS ENERGY PRICES CALCULATED? Understanding how the market operates can help you secure better business energy rates. The main indicator of a great time to switch is when wholesale energy prices dip. Each business energy supplier will closely monitor market activity and adjust unit pricing accordingly. However, many other factors come into play including annual consumption, location of the business premises and meter type. A business operating mostly in the evenings and weekends may benefit from Economy 7 & 10 meters - whilst larger companies may require a half-hourly meter if they have a peak load electricity usage of 100kw and above. Before committing to a long-term business energy contract it’s worth taking some time to evaluate how and when your business uses its energy. WHAT BUSINESS ENERGY TARIFFS ARE AVAILABLE? Here are the main business energy tariffs widely available in the UK: * FIXED-RATE GAS TARIFF A fixed-rate tariff is an agreed price you pay per kWh of gas used. These types of business energy tariffs do not mean you pay exactly what your quote comes back as annually - as the usage may change throughout the year. The amount you pay per unit of gas and electricity will remain fixed. Many companies prefer a fixed-rate tariff as they offer security and predictable outgoings that are friendly to budgeting activities. * VARIABLE-RATE GAS TARIFF Variable gas rates offer flexibility in times of higher wholesale gas prices. The price per unit of gas and electricity may regularly change. Many companies chose to stay on variable-rate tariffs until they can secure cheaper fixed rates to reduce business energy bills. * NO STANDING CHARGE TARIFF On the surface, no standing charge tariffs look very attractive. In some circumstances, such as a seasonal business may benefit from this type of contract. However, an energy supplier often compensates for no standing charge with higher business energy rates. * DEEMED-RATE GAS TARIFF Deemed-rate gas tariffs operate on 28-day rolling terms. Customers are placed on this if a new business gas contract has not been agreed upon. These are often very expensive gas rates and ideally should be avoided. * GREEN BUSINESS GAS TARIFF Many business owners are starting to take steps toward becoming more sustainable. The first step for many businesses is to opt for a green energy tariff. Some companies may be able to benefit from reduced CCL (Climate Change Levy) rates if they are more carbon friendly. MANAGING YOUR BUSINESS ENERGY COSTS 1 Secure gas and electricity prices up to 12 months before your business energy contract ends. This protects your business from wholesale energy price fluctuations. 2 Ensuring you’re on the correct energy tariffs can save you £100s. If your fixed-rate contract ends, business energy suppliers will place you on expensive out-of-contract rates. 3 Auditing your business energy use ensures that your commercial energy bill isn’t more than it should be. An audit can assess everything that affects energy usage and efficiency. Our expert energy team will keep you updated on the progress of your switch via our online tracker. FAQS * WHY COMPARE BUSINESS ENERGY Energy rates are always changing. And there are many reasons why. Aside from the usual rise in wholesale prices - often driven by an increase in demand - higher transportation costs, unrest in oil-rich countries, and even a particularly cold UK winter can all contribute to sudden price hikes. The only way to protect your business against these rate rises is to sign up to a fixed rate energy deal. This means your rates will locked in for the duration of the deal, regardless of how much prices increase across the market. And the only way to make sure your business is on the best deal is to compare deals from a range of suppliers. But business energy comparison can be time-consuming, as you need to ring around each to get individual quotes for gas and electricity. That's why it makes sense to switch with Energy Helpline. It helps if you can give us an idea of how much energy you use - by giving us either of your monthly or annual usage or spend - and let us know whether you're currently out of contract. We'll even look after your renewals to make sure you never overpay for energy again. HOW DOES BUSINESS ENERGY DIFFER FROM A HOME ENERGY CONTRACT? Although it all comes from the same sources, and the same suppliers in some cases, there are many differences between the way business and domestic energy is sold. That's why switching business energy isn't quite as straightforward as switching home energy. Contract terms are one of the main differences between the two. While you're free to switch from a fixed rate domestic energy at any time you like (subject to an early exit fee unless your deal is in its last 49 days), business energy deals don't offer this flexibility. Although you can start comparing business energy and sign up to a new deal as soon as your switching window opens (any time between one and six months before your contract's end date), the switch won't actually take place until your current deal ends. Tariff types are also very different. Whereas you can choose your home energy deal from a range of 'off the shelf' tariffs, business energy contracts are more bespoke. Although this means the comparison process is a bit more involved, it does mean that your energy deal should perfectly fit both the needs and budget of your business. This tailored service is the main reason why switching business energy can be a hassle, and the exact reason why you should leave business energy comparison to our team of experts. To find the best deal for your business, call us now on 01204 916 135 or give us your postcode and we'll give you a call back. * WHEN CAN I SWITCH BUSINESS ENERGY SUPPLIER? Commercial energy supplies generally come under a contract, which will automatically renew each year. If you want to change supplier, you need to give your current supplier a minimum of four weeks' notice. For more details see the ‘What do I need to do to change supplier?’ section below. However, if you are new to the premises then you won't automatically be placed in a contract, so you are free to find a new contract when you wish. We recommend that you do this as soon as possible because most suppliers charge high "out of contract" rates If you are not sure of your business energy contract status please contact our team and we can assist you * WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO CHANGE SUPPLIER? After you've spoken to us, the only thing you need to do is give termination notice to your current business energy supplier in writing, but don't worry - we've created templates of the letters – our energy advisor will assist you in the process. Giving sufficient termination notice will allow you to leave your contract. Then all you need to do is sign the contract with your new supplier, and we will do the rest. * WHAT IS A STANDING CHARGE? A Standing Charge is a daily fee set by the supplier. This is separate to Unit Rate. Standing Charges have risen over the last few years, but are typically less than 60p per day. * WHAT IS KWH (KILOWATT HOUR)? kWh is a measurement which equates to how much energy you’re using. Energy suppliers will charge an amount of money for each kWh unit rate you use for both gas and electricity. The price that energy suppliers charge depends on your contract and market conditions. For example, an energy supplier may charge 12p per kWh of electricity you use. * CAN I GET A DUAL FUEL CONTRACT? Business energy suppliers do not offer dual fuel tariffs. However, you can have the same energy supplier for both gas and electricity to your premises but you will have separate contracts. * HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SWITCH BUSINESS ENERGY? Once you have chosen a gas and electricity tariff best suited to you and have started the switching process, it will take around 4 to 6 weeks until your new contract goes live (unless you’re locking in future prices before your contract end date). You will need to switch your gas and electricity separately. Our expert energy team will keep you updated on the progress of your switch via our online tracker.
