INJURIES & MOVES: JANKOWSKI CLAIMED; MISZ TRADED

Keep track of the Mariners’ recent transactions and injury updates throughout
the season.

LATEST NEWS

Aug. 1: OF Travis Jankowski claimed off waivers from Mets; LHP Danny Young
designated for assignment; OF Marcus Wilson outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma after
clearing waivers
Jankowski was designated for assignment on Friday after hitting .167/.286/.167
(.453 OPS), but given that the Mariners are all of a sudden in need of some
outfield help with Julio Rodríguez sidelined, the eight-year veteran could be a
temporary option soon.

Aug. 1 LHP Anthony Misiewicz traded to Royals in exchange for cash
considerations
One day after he was designated for assignment, the lefty specialist was dealt
to Kansas City, where he'll get another opportunity after a mostly disappointing
2022 in Seattle. Misiewicz was one of the Mariners' better relievers from 2020
into the first half of 2021, but he'd stumbled since, with a 4.61 ERA and 85
ERA+ (league average is 100) in 17 outings before being optioned to Triple-A
Tacoma in June.

Aug. 1: INF Jonathan Villar signs Minor League contract
The 10-year veteran has played in 59 games this season for the Cubs and Angels,
hitting .208/.260/.302 (.562 OPS), and he'll head to Triple-A Tacoma to add some
infield depth.

Aug. 1: RHP Luis Castillo reports to club; LHP Brennan Bernardino optioned to
Triple-A Tacoma
Bernardino was the odd man out when the Mariners needed to clear a 26-man roster
spot for the arrival of Castillo, their big-ticket acquisition ahead of
Tuesday's Trade Deadline. The lefty made his MLB debut in Sunday's loss to
Houston, surrendering a walk-off, shift-beating single to Yordan Alvarez.

Aug. 1: 1B Ty France (wrist) gets encouraging MRI results
France is hopeful that he'll play in this week's series at Yankee Stadium, but
he hasn't yet picked up a bat since suffering the injury during his final at-bat
on Saturday. The good news is that an MRI he underwent on Sunday showed that
there is no structural damage, and it's likely that he'll avoid the 10-day
injured list.

July 31: LF Jarred Kelenic recalled; CF Jack Larsen selected
Kelenic was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, arrived in Houston during
the third inning then went 0-for-3. He will see consistent playing time now
while Julio Rodríguez (hand) recovers. Larsen’s contract was selected from
Double-A Arkansas, and he started in right field, batting ninth, which
represented his big league debut.

July 31: CF Julio Rodríguez (right hand) lands on IL
Rodríguez was placed on the 10-day injured list after getting plunked on the
back of his right hand in the eighth inning on Saturday. The X-rays were
negative, but continued swelling and weakness in his wrist will prevent him from
swinging a bat for at least five days.

INJURY UPDATES

10-DAY AND 15-DAY IL

CF Julio Rodríguez (right wrist injury)
Expected return: TBD
Rodríguez was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 31 after being plunked
on the right hand in the eighth inning against the Astros on July 30. He stayed
in to play defense in the bottom half of the frame, but he was lifted for a
pinch-hitter in the ninth. Rodríguez has full range of motion but not the grip
strength or “vibration off the bat.” (Last updated: July 31)

OF Dylan Moore (back spasms)
Expected return: TBD
Moore exited the July 30 game against the Astros with back spasms and was placed
on the 15-day IL on July 31. (Last updated: July 31)

RF Mitch Haniger (Grade 2 high right ankle sprain)
Expected return: Early August
Haniger went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and played six innings in right field in
his most recent rehab game for Triple-A Tacoma on July 28. He and the team
estimated that the rehab assignment could take a few weeks with built-in time to
DH, play the outfield and recover with off-days. It's not just about seeing how
his body recovers, but also, the need to regain his timing at the plate. But the
fact that Haniger has cleared all of his agility drills, has been sprinting
regularly without discomfort and feels ready to play again is a huge step in his
recovery. (Last updated: July 30)

LHP Tommy Milone (cervical muscle strain)
Expected return: TBD
Milone was placed on the 15-day IL on July 30. The left-hander has posted a 5.40
ERA with five strikeouts in seven appearances (16 2/3 innings) this season.
(Last updated: July 30)

RHP Diego Castillo (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
Castillo was placed on the 15-day IL (retroactive to July 26) from what is being
labeled as right shoulder inflammation. The first indication something was wrong
was in his last outing on July 25 when he was pulled after recording just one
out in the ninth inning.

"He didn't want to go to IL, and we didn't want to place him on it," manager
Scott Servais said. "It's why we waited for Rangers series and [to] see where he
was at. He didn't think he be able to post tonight [in Houston], so that's when
we had to make move." (Last updated: July 28)

OF Taylor Trammell (right hamstring strain)
Expected return: End of July
Trammell has ramped up his baseball activity and continued running, regularly
taking early BP ahead of home games. It's possible that he could begin a Minor
League rehab assignment as soon as this week, when the Mariners go out on the
road again. Trammell said that the hamstring injury isn’t as severe as the one
he sustained in April. (Last updated: July 25)

RHP Ken Giles (right shoulder inflammation)
Expected return: TBD
Giles suffered the injury shortly after entering a July 8 game in the eighth
inning, at which point he was immediately removed. Manager Scott Servais said
that Giles was dealing with soreness on the back side of his shoulder, and he'll
be shelved at least through the All-Star break. (Last updated: July 9)

60-DAY IL

C Tom Murphy (dislocated left shoulder)
Expected return: 2023
Murphy underwent season-ending surgery to repair his left shoulder and has
rejoined the Mariners in Seattle to embark on his rehab. Manager Scott Servais
is hopeful that the backstop will be ready by Spring Training. (Last updated:
July 3)

1B Evan White (left hip)
Expected return: TBD
White returned to Triple-A Tacoma and resumed his rehab assignment on June 14,
two weeks after he experienced a setback that forced him to halt his game
action. He played in eight games before being shelved, going 3-for-23. White has
undergone two surgeries in the past 12 months, first to repair a left hip flexor
strain last July then for a sports hernia in March. (Last updated: June 14)

RHP Casey Sadler (shoulder surgery)
Expected return: 2023
Sadler will miss the entirety of the 2022 season. The 31-year-old righty found
his niche in relief for Seattle last year, reeling off a franchise record 29
consecutive scoreless appearances. That streak will remain active upon his
return to action.

“He was such a big part of our bullpen last year, certainly down the stretch in
what he was able to do in that critical ‘pivot’ role,” manager Scott Servais
said. “Disappointed for him. … He eventually will be fine, but he’s not going to
pitch for us this year.” (Last updated: March 20)
