Matson Sewell Healthcare Consulting in Sacramento

Matson Sewell has worked in healthcare for over 35 years, spanning the spectrum
from direct patient care to national publications and presentations as well as
writing and lobbying for legislative policy change.  Her unique perspective
reflects hands-on experience with patient safety initiatives resulting in
measurable improvement.  She brings to each endeavor a deep commitment to a
safer, more effective healthcare system that respects those who provide

CLAIMS-BASED PATIENT SAFETY



  “Claims-Based Patient Safety” is an  approach to loss prevention which
identifies and responds to clinician and system behaviors that contribute to the
initiation and payment of professional liability claims. Traditionally, loss
prevention efforts derived from claim file reviews produced valuable reports
that never made their way back to improve clinician or system behaviors. The
American Society of Anesthesiologists Closed Claim Project has made huge strides
in reducing that specialty’s risk profile, but the approach has not been
duplicated successfully in other areas.
