US VS APPLE * Home IT’S TIME TO STOP APPLE’S MONOPOLISTIC BEHAVIOR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After years of anticipation, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed its antitrust suit against Big Tech giant Apple on March 21, 2024. The historic lawsuit, filed alongside 16 state and district attorneys general, targets Apple’s abuse of its monopoly power to deprive consumers of choice and tilt the scales against competitors. In its complaint, the DOJ targets a number of Apple’s anti-competitive strategies, which the company has long relied on to thwart competition. This includes Apple intentionally denigrating cross-platform messaging to harm iMessage competitors, preventing app developers from creating “super apps” consumers enjoy, and hindering the growth of mobile cloud streaming services. The complaint also targets Apple abusing its dominance to crush rivals in the smartwatch and payments sector. The lawsuit takes aim at Apple’s efforts to dominate the auto industry through the CarPlay service, which the complaint notes aims to “take over all of the screens, sensors, and gauges in a car” in coming years. For over a century, it’s been clear that monopoly power poses a threat to democracy. Just as the robber barons of the Gilded Age restricted American prosperity in the 19th century, the “digital robber barons” of today continue to stifle innovation and competition. Apple and other Big Tech companies’ anti-competitive behavior has robbed consumers of choice, undermined our democratic institutions, and harmed America’s national security. In the three years since the House Judiciary Committee’s Antitrust Subcommittee released its report on Big Tech’s anticompetitive practices, antitrust suits have been filed against Facebook (now Meta), Google, and Amazon. By filing this antitrust suit against Apple, the DOJ is ensuring that another Big Tech giant sees accountability for its behavior. As non-profit organizations that want to ensure a fair, competitive, innovative economy, we commend the DOJ for taking on Apple. And with Apple clearly looking to extend its dominance into emerging markets like augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI), we are pleased to see the DOJ taking a proactive approach to safeguarding competition.
