LIVE YOUR VALUES. TRANSFORM THE ACADEMY.

HuMetricsHSS is an initiative that creates and supports values-enacted
frameworks for understanding and evaluating all aspects of the scholarly life
well-lived and for promoting the nurturing of these values in scholarly
practice. Comprised of individuals working in academic and nonprofit
academic–adjacent sectors, the HuMetricsHSS team is committed to establishing
humane indicators of excellence in academia, focused particularly on the
humanities and social sciences (HSS).

You can find more about what we do under Our Work and an example framework and
explanation of our values process in Values. History gives an overview of our
initiative from its birth at the TriangleSCI workshop in 2016 through to the
present. If you are interested in running your own values framework workshop,
see our Workshop Kit.

The HuMetricsHSS Initiative is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation.

MY HUMETRICSHSS JOURNEY

My HuMetricsHSS journey began over ten years ago, at least, when I became quite
interested, concerned, worried, slightly panicked, and finally deeply troubled
about how we measure and understand the quality and impact of our research. I
was on leave…

Our eleventh Community Fellows blog is by Trevor Parry-Giles from the University
of Maryland. In his blog, “My HuMetricsHSS Journey,” Parry-Giles talks about his
ten year quest to challenge the ways in which the academy measures and
understands the quality and impact of research.

“...the relentless quest in higher education for newer and better research
metrics has only intensified—new citation measures, h-indexes, i-indexes, Google
Scholar—the list is dizzying. Gone are the days of actually reading our
colleagues’ work; all that’s required to reach some judgment about someone’s
research is to determine how often they’re cited and by whom. It’s this frantic
search for new and different ways of metrically assessing research that spurs
and continues to motivate my interest in these conversations.”

Our eleventh Community Fellows blog is by Laura Sanders from Portland Community
College. In "Community Contexts and Campus Culture: Creating Agents of Change in
the HuMetricsHSS Fellows Program" Sanders talks about the development of new
courseware that aims to help instructors more inclusive in response to the
current climate of distrust and cultural differences.

"Recently uploaded to my Google Classroom, “Equitable Approaches to Composition”
encourages students to investigate the process by which knowledge is created in
the academy and in our culture. Through readings and writing assignments based
on bias in technology that might initially appear “neutral” to untrained eyes,
the course empowers students to challenge dominant culture in communities that
strongly resist such questioning of the status quo."

Our tenth Community Fellows blog is by Santiago Garcia, from Rio Hondo College
in Whittier, California. In "Sustaining Public Engagement and Building Classroom
Capacity through The Mesoamerican Clay-Figurine Project" Garcia talks about his
project that engaged in "public discussions, reading events, and symposiums
centered on racial and social justice, community health and well-being, and
Indigenous Educational Sovereignty. The programing, the first of its kind, is
unique for bringing together all facets of society and academia together to help
ease the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic."
