Data: NOAA data via NCIS; Chart: Erin Davis/Axios Visuals

Temperatures will sizzle toward record territory for many in the Mid-Atlantic on
Thursday. Baltimore and Washington, D.C., could reach 80°F.

The big picture: The freakishly mild winter in the East has led to a sense of
unease. This is February, when Nor'easters normally churn the Atlantic and
strong winds toss a messy wintry mix at the I-95 corridor, dumping heavy snow
for millions.

Data: Bureau of Labor Statistics; Note: data includes lockouts; Chart: Axios
Visuals

The number of major worker strikes in the U.S. rose to its second highest level
in two decades in 2022, per a government report out Wednesday.

Why it matters: The strength of the labor market and the rise in popularity of
unions drove up the numbers. COVID-era issues, like short-staffing, burnout and
pay that didn't keep up with inflation, also pushed workers to the picket lines.

Former Israeli national security adviser Eyal Hulata, who was deeply involved in
mediation efforts between Kyiv and Moscow last year, recently told Axios he
doesn’t see any chance there will be a deal to end the war in Ukraine anytime
soon.

What he's saying: If both sides think time is on their side, a deal won't be
possible, Hulata said in his first time speaking about Israeli policy toward the
war since leaving the Prime Minister's Office in early January. "It was true in
the beginning of the war, and it is still true today."

MOST WORKERS ARE GETTING RAISES THIS YEAR, SURVEY FINDS

Data: Payscale’s 2023 Compensation Best Practices Report; Chart: Axios Visuals

Payscale survey out Wednesday morning.

Why it matters: Who doesn't love a salary increase? These numbers look big, but
more employers are unsure about their plans in 2023 than last year. And with
inflation running at around 6% in the U.S. year over year, some workers are
barely keeping pace.

SNEAKER RESALE PRICES ARE FALLING TO EARTH

Data: Altan Insights, compiled from StockX; Chart: Axios Visuals

Coveting a pair of Travis Scott Jordans or Panda Dunks? You just might be able
to snag them for a reasonable price in the resale market — quite a turnaround
from a year ago.

Why it matters: Price declines are signaling that the froth has left the market,
leading sneaker heads and analysts alike to wonder if the market is crashing —
or just normalizing.

The war in Ukraine has been defined in part by Russian President Vladimir Putin
and his military's miscalculations on and off the battlefield.

The big picture: A year on, Russia's military appears to have learned some
lessons and made tactical adjustments, but those changes don't address bigger
problems, indicating the Kremlin doesn't appear to fully understand where and
how it went wrong, experts say.
