JOURN., MA EDITOR | WRITER | CONTENT WRITER GEEK EDITORIAL SERVICES ERICA CHALLIS DIP. JOURN., MA EDITOR | WRITER | CONTENT WRITER Queen Geek Editorial Services Erica Challis Dip. Journ., MA Editor | Writer | Content Writer HOME | ABOUT DO YOU NEED AN EDITOR? An editor works with you to give your ideas clarity, precision, and style. That means going over the details of grammar, spelling, and formatting, so your manuscript follows professional rules and norms. Whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction, I’m here to wrangle grammar, tidy up tenses, and banish typos. It’s a task I approach with care and empathy, because I know how personal your writing is to you. Your words matter, and my job is to make them shine. EDITORIAL PERSPECTIVE As writers, we all know that feeling when a sentence doesn’t seem right, but we’re not sure why. An editor brings a fresh pair of eyes. They’ll tell you what isn’t working, and they can suggest alternatives. EDITORS ARE WORD GEEKS THAT ARE ON YOUR SIDE. Is the name of a ship written in italics? When do scientific names for species use capitals? How do dialogue tags work? Is more than one court martial correctly written “courts martial”? Should those quote marks have come after that question mark? As a word geek, I absolutely live for questions like that. And getting those details right are what gives a manuscript its professional polish. TESTIMONIALS Erica provided a thorough, in-depth line edit, copy edit and proofread at a competitive and affordable cost. Her passion for the project, attention to detail, and ability to track changes are impressive. Her focus on story and character development is second to none. A working partnership with Erica felt like a breath of fresh air with a supportive, engaged, attention-driven service that helped produce a polished, professional product. I would recommend her to everyone. Jacob LarchAuthor of the Legacy series, available for download and pay to print on Amazon. Erica is an eagle-eyed editor, finding inconsistencies that need clarifying, prose that needs polishing, and opportunities to tease out the subtler themes of the story that sometimes only an external eye can find. With a firm and kind hand, she has strengthened every manuscript I've sent her way and cheered me on at every stage of my writing. Celia Winter Erica is an exceptional communicator and made the editing process a truly collaborative experience. She has an incredible eye for detail, catching nuances I had overlooked and enhancing the work without altering its core voice. Her ability to bring structure and polish while respecting my creative intent was invaluable. I highly recommend Erica to any writer seeking an editor who truly cares about the story and its potential. Wilson McNally Novelist, 2025 IIML Graduate Erica is an incredibly close reader, someone who can pick up anything from grammatical errors to timeline issues to the rhythm being off in a piece. I feel privileged whenever she gives feedback on anything I’ve written, because I know I can trust her judgement and it will always make the work better. I highly recommend her. Michelle Duff Journalist | Author | Voyager Media Awards 2023 Feature Writing (general) winner, 2023 Modern Letters Prize for Fiction Erica has a love of all things writing and is genuinely – and generously – committed to helping other writers do their best work. I value her feedback so highly – it's always insightful, gently but directly pointing out things that aren’t working so well – as well as praising the things that do work! You can tell she’s really thought about the story and what it’s trying to say. She’s also able to turn things around really quickly, which is great if you’re up against a deadline. Gina Butson Author of Cumulus, Sargeson short story competition prizewinner The amount of time and consideration that Erica put into editing and critiquing my work was above and beyond. She saw the potential in every piece, no matter how loose of an idea I had formed, and was able to give great insight into where a piece might be lacking or a direction that it could go in. Her editing undoubtedly improved my work and I would trust her in editing any and all future pieces I might need her expertise on. I’m a professional writer and editor with 20 years’ experience writing for corporate and arts organisations. My editorial path began as a reporter, essayist, and editor for the popular Tolkien fan website, TheOneRing.net, which led to a two-volume book contract from Cold Spring Press. A postgraduate diploma in journalism from Massey University was my stepping stone to freelance writing in Wellington. Those gigs all pay the bills, but what I love — what I’m geeky about — is words. That means I enjoy all types of writing from Anglo-Saxon verse to the latest novels on the Booker Prize and Hugo Awards lists. I read literary fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and non-fiction, with a bias towards science and history. I have a Masters in Creative Writing from the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka, and I’m currently working on a contemporary New Zealand novel set in West Auckland.
