The eviction drive will continue on Sunday

SILCHAR: At least 90 residential houses allegedly built illegally on government
land were demolished in Ichabeel Tea Estate in Patharkandi circle of Karimganj
district on Saturday.
A senior official said this was the first day of the demolition drive carried
out by the administration to clear at least 1,00 bighas of government and
ceiling surplus land in the tea garden, owned by state-run Assam Tea Corporation
(ATC), which were allegedly encroached upon by families without valid documents.
Sources said Patharkandi circle authorities backed by Assam police and
paramilitary forces evicted the families from the government land by using 20
excavators amid protests by settlers.
On Friday evening, additional district magistrate (Karimganj) Rintu Chandra Bodo
promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Ichabeel Tea Estate and five
other adjoining villages to ensure peace during the drive to clear the areas
from illegal encroachments. The order will remain in force till the completion
of the drive.


The eviction drive led by circle officer Arpita Dutta Majumdar began at 10 am on
Saturday and continued till late in the afternoon.
“The eviction was carried out almost peacefully baring one incident of stone
pelting. During the drive, some people from inside a house started hurling
stones targeting those engaged in the drive, including police. Soon they were
dispersed by the security forces and the eviction drive continued smoothly,”
superintendent of police (Karimganj) Padmanabh Baruah told to TOI.
The SP said the eviction couldn’t be completed on Saturday and it will be
resumed on Sunday.
North Karimganj MLA Kamalaksha Dey Purkayastha protested against the eviction.
The Congress legislator on Saturday met with Gyanendra Dev Tripathi,
commissioner & secretary of the revenue & disaster management department, Assam,
and told him that the people of this area have been living there for many years.
They have the documents issued by the government. Tripathi said he would look
into the matter.
