VOLATILITY IS RETURNING

Anxiety is beginning to percolate on Wall Street. The Cboe Volatility Index
(VIX), Wall Street’s predominant gauge of fear, hit 23.23 on Monday as stocks
fell across the board. That would be the index's highest closing level in nearly
three weeks.

The VIX tracks traders' expectations for stock swings over the next 30 days
through options prices; it has swiftly fallen since the market bottomed on June
16. Now it's starting to show signs of life following Thursday’s month-end
options expiry, which many strategists said could lead to a resurgence in
volatility.

That said, the index remains fairly subdued relative to the above-30 levels it
hit in each of the first six months of the year, a key level signifying
increased options activity (read: fear).
