NEWSLETTER 2024 OCTOBER

PUBLISHED ON
OCTOBER 3RD, 2024

ARTIST: NICKY MOROCH

Nicky Moroch, comes from a musical family and has had a guitar in his hands ever
since he could hold one. He actually learned to read music before he could read
a book! He joined Return To Forever drummer Lenny White's band at age 20 and
started a career as a first call session guitarist soon after.

A true musical chameleon, he appears on countless recordings, TV shows and
soundtracks, as well as live performances with artists as varied as David Bowie,
Vanessa Williams, Madonna, Luther Vandross, Elton John, Lady Gaga, and many
more.

He toured with sax legend David Sanborn for over 20 years, continues his studio
work and can sometimes be found playing out with his group, The Sideguys, among
others. A solo project is also in the works.

STORY: GIGO (GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT)

"Sooner or later everyone sits down to a banquet of consequences."
-Robert Louis Stevenson

Stevenson's quote serves as a reminder that all our choices, good and bad,
eventually catch up with us. It also emphasizes the power and responsibility we
hold over our own lives.

But how does it relate to garbage in, garbage out, and our musical journey? GIGO
is a computing phrase that basically says that if you input garbage, i.e. bad
data, no matter how good your program or system, you'll get garage as a result.

Memory scientists now seem to think that we learn in three phases: encoding
(putting information in), processing (holding on), and retrieval (getting it
back out). As musicians we spend a lot of time encoding when learning new pieces
or techniques. Research shows that if you continually make mistakes while
encoding–garbage in–your brain will process the mistakes and when you retrieve
it you'll play the mistakes. Research supports that it's better to go slow and
encode with less mistakes to better and faster learning.

If we're always in a rush, learning songs at the last minute, and glossing over
mistakes, eventually it will catch up with us. This is why many people continue
to play songs incorrectly even when they know that they are making mistakes.
It's the old saw of, that's the way I've always played it. Science now shows
it's difficult to break processed memories.

Bottom Line: Go slow, input good data, and the banquet consequences will be
good.
