Enter your e-mail address: Photo of the Day: 2023-06-12: Centenary Le Mans winner, new Mustang GT3 and hydrogen Ligier ... This weekend's centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans was destined to be a historic one and the race certainly did not disappoint. The largest field of top level, factory prototypes in a generation and changeable weather conditions contributed to a nail-biting race, decided only in the final hours on Sunday afternoon. Eventually, and perhaps fittingly, it was Ferrari with the 499P that claimed the win after a race-long battle with one of the Toyotas. It was the closest finish at Le Mans in years. For Ferrari, it was the first outright win since 1965. Just four races into its career, the 499P is already very much a great success. During the build-up to the race, Ford Performance Vehicles took the wraps off the all-new Mustang GT3. With the GT3 regulations due to be adopted by the FIA WEC as well from 2024 onwards, it is due to race at next year's Le Mans with the German Proton team. Developed for Ford by Multimatic and M-Sport, it features a production-based naturally aspirated V8 and all-round independent suspension. The Mustang GT3 shown at Le Mans boasted a spectacular Troy Lee design, which we hope will be carried over for the Multimatic run works effort that will compete with the Mustang GT3 in the North American events. As part of Le Mans' big push towards a hydrogen category, Ligier and Bosch produced this JS2 RH2. It is powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine that runs on hydrogen. Shown in prototype form at Le Mans, development is ongoing but the engine is already producing over 550 bhp with more horses expected to be found in the next few weeks. 2023-06-09: New Porsche hypercar, hydrogen Toyota racer and new Alpine Le Mans car ... At a special celebration for the company's 75th anniversary, Porsche revealed the Mission X Concept last night. This a design study for a next generation hypercar to follow in the footsteps of the 959, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. Although details are limited, the Mission X is all electric and should have around one horsepower for every kilogram of weight. Another major announcement came at Le Mans in the form of the Toyota GR H2 Racing Concept, which is a preview of Toyota's 2026 Le Mans racer. Significantly, it will be powered by an internal combustion engine fueled by hydrogen. With the GR H2 comes an acceleration towards a hydrogen only Toyota competition program. Also unveiled at the Le Mans centenary is the Alpine A424_β, which is due to race in the Hypercar category from 2024 onwards. Built to the IMSA LMDh regulations, it combines an Oreca-sourced chassis with a bespoke, turbocharged V6 engine. This is mated to a spec hybrid system supplied by Bosch. The design of the A424_β was inspired by the Alpenglow concept shown last year. 2023-06-06: Le Mans winners from Porsche, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo ... The centenary edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will be held this weekend. To mark the occasion, we have taken a closer look at three outright winners we have seen in action during the last year. First up is the Porsche 936 that was driven to victory by Jürgen Barth, Hurley Haywood and Jacky Ickx during the 1977 edition. It was the first example built and today, chassis 936-001 is the only one in private hands. It was recently restored to its Le Mans winning configuration and demonstrated at the Festival of Speed by Jacky Ickx himself. A winner in 1958, this Ferrari 250 TR58 was part of Pierre Bardinon's Mas du Clos collection for many years. We have seen 0728TR several times and in 2022, it was demonstrated by the most recent owner at the Goodwood Revival as part of Ferrari's 75th Anniversary Celebrations. Alfa Romeo won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four years in a row between 1931 and 1934. The winner in 1934 was this Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Brianza Le Mans Spider. It was part of the same collection for five decades from 1954, and has subsequently been sympathetically restored. The current custodian campaigned 2311249 at the Le Mans Classic. 2023-06-01: Six-cylinder Ferrari and Aston Martin DBR9 headed for auction and Alpine Hypercar first glimpse ... That Ferrari did not just race V12-engined cars is illustrated by this 121 LM. One of only a handful Ferraris built with a straight six engine, it was blisteringly fast but ultimately not quite as reliable as the twelve-cylinder models it raced alongside. Chassis 0546LM raced in the Mille Miglia and 24 Hours of Le Mans as a factory car before it was sold to the United States. It will now return to Le Mans as one of the headliners in next week's exclusive RM Sotheby's Centenary sale. Also on offer is this well-raced Aston Martin DBR9. A customer car, it was raced competitively from 2007 through to the end of 2011, scoring outright and class wins. Its third in class at Le Mans in 2010 was another career highlight. Not raced since 2011, DBR9/106 represents a great ticket into what is now historic racing's hottest category. Alpine will use the Friday before Le Mans to reveal the upcoming Hypercar. Built to the LMDh rule set, it will be based on an Oreca chassis and should make its competition debut in 2024. 2023-05-30: 2023 Spa Classic report and 200-shot gallery ... One of the annual highlights on the historic racing calendar is the Spa Classic. Organised as a stand alone event by Peter Auto since 2011, this year's eleventh edition more than lived up to the expectations. Spread over nine fields, 430 competition cars hit the track during the three-day event, while there were also 800 vehicles on display brought by enthusiast clubs. New for the eleventh edition was a demonstration for 3.5-litre Formula 1 cars. Providing evocative sights and sounds were a great variety of engines ranging from the iconic Jaguar XK straight-six engine right through to the howling Judd V10s of the 2000s. Our photographers were at the track to capture all the highlights. The results is this 200-shot gallery that serves to illustrate our race report. We will do all this again this weekend with the Grand Prix de l'Age d'Or at the Circuit de Dijon-Prenois, which will see seven of the nine grids back in action. 2023-05-25: All-new Aston Martin DB12, rare McLaren MP4/1B and first electric Caterham ... Late last night, Aston Martin unveiled the all-new DB12 in the build-up to the Monaco Grand Prix. Although still instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin, the DB12 is slated to be the first of whole range of new products that should secure the company's future in the long run. Underneath the carbon-fibre composite skin, the new Grand Tourer boasts a bonded aluminium chassis and the four-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine sourced from Mercedes-AMG. In this application, the all-aluminium V8 is good for 670 bhp, which is sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Aston Martin expect to ship the first DB12s to the customers before the end of the year and we expect the drop-top Volante follow shortly as well. While we will not be in Monaco this year, we did want you to get in the mood by taking a closer look at this McLaren MP4/1B Cosworth that we captured during last year's Historic Grand Prix. Building on the pioneering all-carbon fibre composite MP4/1, this was one of three new cars built ahead of the 1982 season. It was driven to two wins, by Niki Lauda in 1982 and in MP4/1C guise by John Watson the following year. Successfully raced in historic events in recent years, MP4/1B - 6 was previously owned by the Sultan of Brunei. British specialist manufacturer Caterham is the latest to adapt the current electrification trend with this EV Seven development prototype. Only 70 kg heavier than a conventional Seven, it features an electric rear axle that is good for 240 bhp. It should be capable of accelerating to 60 mph in around four seconds. Once development work on the EV Seven is completed, a production version will be launched. All Cars - Contact us - Privacy Statement - Top © 1998 - 2023 Ultimatecarpage.com
