Large, damaging hail, high winds, and strong tornadoes could be a repetitive occurrence each day. A warm, very humid air mass and eastern part of a robust upper-level disturbance will combine to trigger plenty of downpours and strong to severe thunderstorms from the Lower Great Lakes into the Ohio and Tennessee valleys this afternoon and evening. The government’s Storm Prediction Center has maintained an Enhanced Risk for a corridor of potentially organized severe weather across much of the Ohio Valley. Cities in this severe weather danger zone include Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind., Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio, and Louisville, Ky. Very large, damaging hail, gusty winds up to 70 mph, and a few strong tornadoes could accompany the more intense thunderstorm activity today. Surrounding this elevated zone is quite a large area from Detroit to Chicago at the northern fringe, to near Cape Girardeau, Mo., to Charleston, W. Va., which will need to keep a watchful eye to the sky for powerful thunderstorms as well. Just like their Ohio Valley neighbors, all severe weather risks will be in play during this afternoon and evening. Part of the same storm will regroup for midweek, paving the way for new low pressure to develop across the Middle Mississippi Valley by afternoon and evening. This time, a warm, very humid air mass south of the storm’s warm front and east of the storm’s cold front will interact with a series of weak disturbances at high altitudes in the atmosphere. This will likely lead to another severe storm outbreak from the southern Ohio to Tennessee and Lower Mississippi valleys. A large Enhanced Risk exists from southeastern Oklahoma and southern and south-central Missouri to far southwestern West Virginia, western Virginia, and far western North Carolina. Fort Smith to Little Rock, Ark., Memphis to Nashville and Knoxville, Tenn., Louisville and Lexington-Fayette, Ky., and St. Louis, are all found in this heightened severe danger zone on Wednesday. Individual, lines or clusters of thunderstorms will motor across these locations throughout the afternoon and evening. By predawn on Thursday, a lengthy line of robust thunderstorms could stretch from the western Carolina Piedmont to northern Louisiana and far northeastern Texas. This means the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex to Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., could be peppered by damaging wind gusts, large hail, and even a few tornadoes. Just north of the Interstate 70 corridor from Missouri to far western Ohio will also need to have a way to receive severe weather alerts. The storm system will accelerate across the Mid-Atlantic throughout Thursday. This will drive the attached cold front east of the Appalachian Spine, as well as across the Deep South and Gulf Coast. Baltimore and Washington, D.C., to Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Columbia, S.C., Atlanta, Dothan and Mobile, Ala., Alexandria and Shreveport, La., Lufkin, Waco, and Austin, Texas, are some bigger cities that might have to deal with big thunderstorms. Large hail and damaging wind gusts are the primary risks, but a tornado or two will be possible as well. Thunderstorms will be repetitive for many these next few days, which means the flooding risk will certainly increase. One-half inch to locally 2 to 3 inches will soak the Ohio and Tennessee valleys to the Southeast and Deep South. If you approach a flooded roadway, it is best to follow simple advise: “Turn, Around, Don’t Drown!” The best way to remain safe is to stay prepared and informed about your local weather. Have a severe weather kit packed with a battery-operated radio, water and non-perishable food items should you be without power for long periods of time.
