 * MOMENTS BEQUEATHED

   Moments bequeathed as time stands still, each day a murmuring heartbeat,
   where lifeblood drips from tattered quill. *

 * A VERY HONEST DATE

   The waitress was very fat and I did not like her hair, but she had a good
   attitude as she guided me to my seat. The restaurant was not full on a
   Friday, so I guessed that the concert next door was still on and that it
   would fill up with people who had terrible taste in music later (the group
   playing truly sucked). I knew that my name was on the reservation list, but I
   still had a twenty ready in case she gave me a hassle.

 * A LOOK AHEAD TO WEEK 18 OF THE 2023 NFL SEASON

   Week 17 kicks off tonight, but I want to take a look ahead to Week 18, the
   final week of the regular season. We all love the final week, don't we? We've
   really loved it since they changed the final week's schedule back in 2010.
   The final week always completes the league's playoff puzzle, it's do or die
   for a lot of teams looking to get in and even clinch divisions. However, a
   lot of games lacked a lot of drama, and even saw teams not give their all
   when they know that they can't move up in the standings. So in 2010, the NFL
   decided to make all of the final week's games divisional, because regardless
   of where a team is in the standings, that team wants to give their all to
   defeat a division rival.

 * PAUL STEWART: 10 QUESTIONS

   Pre-amble: I gave Dall-e/ChatGPT a picture of me and asked them to make it
   more psychadelic and they came up with this? I then asked for a quill and
   paper to be added because you know, writer. Like...wtf AI.

 * THE ROOKIE

   Sergeant Blake Billingsly, found the front door of the property wide open,
   television blaring and a fat ginger cat perched in front of it, oblivious to
   the intrusion. Finding the remote, he clicked it off, only to hear a deep,
   menacing growl coming from the furry statue. It turned and stared directly at
   the policeman, holding his gaze until the television came to life once more.
   Sergeant Billingsly turned the sound down, shook his head in confusion, then
   started his reconnaissance of the property.

   the moon shines too bright tonight I know where you might be where they draw
   the blinds and midnight oil burns incessantly until the last dawn

 * REACHING THE CABIN

   We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. The
   delicate winter sun reflected off of the frozen pines, scattering a golden
   glow throughout the forest and illuminating off the car dash.

 * IDENTITY CHALLENGE WINNERS

   Sam Eliza Green has been a creator with Vocal since the summer of 2021, and
   has published 114 pieces — warm congratulations on their first Challenge win.
   Their free-flowing poem, You, and I, and She takes first place in our
   Identity Challenge, its short lines a conversation about being and feeling,
   one which inhabits emotion with exploratory language. We loved the images of
   a winter “when nothing feels right/ and wrong has carved/ into my skin like/
   the sharp snap/ of abandonment.” Image and sensation do a slow dance that
   draws the reader in.

 * SMOOTH CHALLENGE WINNERS

   Life is rough, sometimes; we could all do with a little smoothing out. In the
   entries to our Smooth challenge, there were stones and fur, water and ice,
   the wind over soft skin. Congratulations to Kate Kastelberg, our winner with
   ‘New Stones in the River: A Life Insured’, a truly lovely sestina that
   indicates loss but gathers memory into joy. “The years since the river was
   born,/ I have sat on its stony shores, passing/ time’s spells: feel roughshod
   rock turn to velvet as lilies bloom right/ from the water’s surface, slowly
   at first, earning/ their place in the sun.” Kate’s terrific poem is a
   reminder that a stricture — like one of our challenge rubrics — can be a gift
   rather than a constraint, an opportunity to take a concept and make it one’s
   own.
