SONY'S NEW 28-70MM F2 GM IS A ZOOM FOR DARK PLACES

Sony has announced the FE 28-70mm F2 GM, a zoom lens that trades 4mm at the wide
end for an aperture that's a stop brighter than the one found on a classic
24-70mm F2.8. It's the company's first constant F2 zoom lens for its E-mount
cameras.

Recent Videos
next
stay

The lens's optical formula consists of 20 elements in 14 groups, with three
aspherical lenses, three super ED elements, and one ED element. It uses an
11-blade aperture. The front element has an oil and water-resistant flourine
coating, and the lens is moisture and dust resistant.

It's far from a compact lens, though it's not as monstrously large as you might
expect – it weighs in at 918g (32 oz) and is around 140mm (5.5") long. It has an
86mm filter thread.

Sony makes it obvious what lens it's competing with, highlighting that it's 36%
lighter and 11% smaller in diameter than Canon's RF 28-70mm F2 L lens while
claiming better corner-to-corner sharpness. The company also says the lens's
four linear motors can focus even when shooting at 120fps, and emphasized that
they're quieter than the older ring-type ultrasonic style motor in the Canon F2.
In fairness, that lens was one of the original RF-mount releases, announced in
2018.

> "Sony makes it obvious which lens it's competing with"

The quieter operation should help when shooting video. Other pluses for video:
it has an internal focusing mechanism which should make it easier to use the
lens on a gimbal, the ability to switch the aperture ring into clickless mode
and support for the focus breathing compensation mode included on some Sony
bodies. You can also set the manual focus ring to have a linear response, which
should make focus pulls easier.

The lens has a variety of switches and buttons. There are two customizable focus
hold buttons, an Iris lock switch, the aperture click switch and a zoom
smoothness switch that lets you adjust between "smooth" and "tight" torque
settings.

It's not the fastest zoom lens available for E-mount: at the time of writing,
that prize goes to Sigma's 28-45mm F1.8, though that model has substantially
less reach on the tele end and only a 1/3EV increase in light-gathering ability.

The FE 28-70mm F2 GM will be available in mid-December and has an MSRP of
$2,899.

Press Release:

SONY ELECTRONICS ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST CONSTANT F2 APERTURE ZOOM LENS: THE
FULL-FRAME 28-70MM F2 G MASTER™

The Unique Combination of a Versatile Focal Range, Large F2 Aperture, and
Compact Form Factor

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 19, 2024 - Sony Electronics Inc. introduces the 28-70mm F2 G
Master, the first1 Sony zoom lens with a constant F2 aperture and 77th lens in
the Sony E-Mount lineup. This full-frame lens offers a versatile focal range
from 28mm to 70mm while delivering prime-like2 bokeh with its constant F2
aperture. Despite its wide aperture and zoom range, the 28-70mm F2 G Master
remains compact, lightweight, and well-balanced, making it ideal for both
photography and video applications. This combination of zoom range, large
aperture, and compact design makes this an innovative and versatile lens for
portrait, sports, wedding, event, and video professionals.

“Our goal with the 28-70mm F2 G Master was to create a high-performing zoom lens
that could be a strong single lens alternative to multiple primes,” said Yang
Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “We
prioritized a lightweight design during the engineering process as we knew that
was a critical factor for real-life, practical use. And in a manner that only
Sony can do, we were able to deliver a small, standard F2 zoom lens that does
not sacrifice image quality. We’re proud to add this to our G Master series and
believe it is one of the most innovative lenses ever offered to professionals.”

SHARP IMAGERY AND BEAUTIFUL BOKEH

The 28-70mm F2 G Master produces extremely sharp corner-to-corner results
throughout the entire zoom range, even while shooting wide open at F2. The
high-resolution output is made possible by the three XA (extreme aspherical)
elements and three aspherical elements built within the lens that minimize
aberrations. The lens also features a floating focusing system that helps
maintain internal stability. This focusing mechanism enables an impressive
minimum focusing distance of up to 14.8 inches (0.38m) throughout the entire
zoom range.

Staying true to the G Master lens lineage, the lens’ aperture up to F2 produces
extraordinary bokeh, ideal for creating images that showcase a shallow depth of
field. The 28-70mm F2 amplifies the G Master bokeh standards through a newly
designed 11-blade circular aperture unit. Chromatic aberrations, which cause
color fringing within photos, are effectively minimized with three Super ED
(extra-low dispersion) elements and one ED element built within the lens.
Additionally, Sony’s Nano AR Coating II reduces flare and internal reflections,
ensuring clear images, even when strong light sources are present in the frame.

COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITHOUT COMPROMISING QUALITY

The 28-70mm F2 G Master is one of the most advanced mirrorless camera lenses
manufactured with a total 20 different lens elements arranged within 14 internal
groups. Despite the advanced optical design, the lens remains compact at 3.6 x
5.5 inches (92.9 x 139.8mm) and lightweight at approximately 32.3 ounces (918g).
The combination of imaging performance and a compact form factor offers an
innovative solution that meets the demands of industry professionals.

PRECISE AUTOFOCUS TRACKING WITH INSTANT RESPONSE

Reliable and responsive autofocus is delivered through the lens’ four XD
(extreme dynamic) linear motors powered by advanced control algorithms. This
smooth performance system provides accurate and quick focus tracking, often
essential in many professional use cases like weddings and sports. This lens is
fully compatible with Sony’s Alpha 9 III‘s high-speed continuous shooting
capabilities of up to 120 frames per second3 with AF/AE (autofocus/autoexposure)
tracking, even while zooming.

DESIGNED FOR HIGH-PERFORMANCE VIDEO SHOOTING

Along with its F2 aperture, the zoom range of the 28-70mm G Master provides a
versatile video option that can cover standard field-of-view shots and tighter
compositions up to 70mm. This lens minimizes focus breathing through its build
and compatibility with the Breathing Compensation feature on various Alpha
bodies4. Its high autofocus performance ensures reliable focus even when
recording in high frame rates up to 4K 120p / FHD 240p5. Additionally, the XD
linear motors and newly developed aperture unit operates silently, preventing
any lens noise from being captured during filming.

The lens is ideal for gimbal use with a minimal zoom extension of approximately
.68 inches. The compact form factor and short external zoom helps maintain
gimbal balance, even at varying focal lengths.

OPERABILITY AND RELIABILITY FOR VERSATILE CONTROL

Key control features include Linear Response MF for intuitive manual focusing,
adjustable zoom ring torque, and an aperture ring with a click ON/OFF switch.
The lens also offers two customizable focus hold buttons, an iris lock switch,
and an AF/MF switch. The 28-70mm F2 G Master has an 86mm filter diameter and a
convenient window on the lens hood for variable filter adjustments.

For durability, all buttons and switches are sealed with silicone gaskets, and
critical areas are designed to resist dust and moisture6. This ensures
reliability, even while using in challenging outdoor environments. Additionally,
a fluorine coating on the front element repels contaminants for easy cleaning.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The 28-70mm F2 G Master will be available in December 2024 for approximately
$2,899.99 USD and $3,999.99 CAD. It will be sold at a variety of Sony's
authorized dealers throughout North America.

Impressive. Does this start a wave of new fast zooms? A compact 20-50 f2
weighting under 600 gram would interest me, Sony. The newish 24-50 2.8 is not
bad but 20-50 f2 would be a different ball game.

If the Sony is better it's because Canon gave them a really good starting point.
Both excellent lenses, no question.

Ok serious question. Would people have accepted say a 1.2kg 24-70 f/2 over a
918g 28-70 f/2. I applaud Sony for getting the weight way down compared to
Canon, but the initial rumours were that it would be 24mm.

Any way looks very nice, but personally I would have liked to see a 20-85 f/2.8
as an instant buy,

I probably won’t buy this lens and I probably won’t buy it because it doesn’t go
to 24…

That said I still think it will be popular and it will sell well I think. It’s
an amazing piece of kit.

The question is more like how much people would be willing to pay for such a
lens. Because even if it was possible without serious compromises, it would
surely cost way more than 3k$

Sony not being able to offer 8K60p is strange. Sony trolls made huge fanfare
about A1 having little issue with heat at 8K30p compared to R5, but Canon has
fixed those issues with R5II and it seems Sony made no effort whatsoever to get
A1II to the same place despite being in a bigger body than A1.

I own the Canon version and it's all I need for events, and makes their
expensive f/1.4 primes unnecessary. At 2/3 the weight this Sony version looks
very impressive.

The price is very high for what it offers!

It's way better to use 2x primes on 2x camera body's instead on only body and
this lens IMO.

The second body + 2 primes outweighs the cost objection you have. I'm not
disagreeing with the methodology, but if your overall point for objecting is
cost, I don't think this is a very good alternative.

Price is the same as getting both 35GM and 85GM in France, or even a used
24-70GMII + 85 GM II. You really need to have a serious reason not to switch
lenses to get that lens, though I'm sure these reasons exist for some of us
here.

I must say that this release day was a bit boring. I hope 2025 will be a better
year for Sony.

Irene Rudnyk has a good portrait comparison against the Canon RF 28-70mm f2
lens.
The Sony GM is a bit sharper with silent AF in video, while Canon has a warmer,
slightly dreamier look. These seem to be the most significant differences
besides the size and weight.

right, dreamy i am sure you can get a preset for dreamy , not so sure lighter
faster(af)and sharper can be preset purchased ? but to canons credit they had
this lens 6 years earlier and i guess a 24-70mm f2 will come soon enough

If Canon wants to make a version 2 of their 28-70 f/2, to cut some weight - it
will have 5-6% distortion on 28mm with a profile that cuts off 10-15% of the
frame and it will have like... -4 ev of vignetting.
Nice to see that Sony didn't fire the guys who fix distortion. They send them on
vacation more often, but still keep them on staff at least for the G-Master
series.
But Canon, somewhere around 2020 put these guys in a boat and pushed them
downstream.

We are long term Canon users (three R52 bodies now) and have been very happy
this far.
This does appear a very interesting camera. Having the NR tool using multi
exposures is nice (I appreciate we can do that in different ways for any
camera), fast network speed and the speed boost button sounds very handy.
I'm assuming rolling shutter is similar to the R1 at a little under 4ms.

@Aleks7

You seem to be a bit off with reality.

There are: Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8, Canon 28-70mm f/2 (the most similar lens with
this one), Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8, Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, Canon 28-70mm f/2.8.

And also the Tamron and Sigma 35-150mm f/2-2.8.

In the 90s, standard zooms would start also at 35mm, that was the ”wide” back
then, and in the early 2000s as well, for compact cameras.

It's also a very relevant lens for those that want a zoom with f/2, and don't
want the shorter range of the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8.

Haha, 28-70/2.8 or 28-75/2.8 lenses (Tamron, Sigma and now Canon with IS) seem
very popular with mirorless systems, thanks to their reduced size, weight and
price.

This criticism doesn't matter to me for this lens, which I think of as an indoor
portrait oriented lens, where I typically don't want to go as wide as 24mm.

why would you need 24mm for this lens? For landscape, there is rarely a need for
f2 zoom. 28-70 is perfect for weddings and events.

Canon and Sony outdoing each other... Very good for us poor users (once we have
paid for their products)...

Sony mimicking Canon is good ..
Sony should also copy Canon for the 24-105 f/2.8
.. and the equivalent size hybrid photo / video zooms in f/2.8
.. and the 200-800 zoom..

Canon could also come up with an 20-70 f/4 ...
And smaller zooms...

Amazing lens. Especially the fact that it's 36% lighter than the Canon. And the
E mount is so small. Nikon used to say they could not make f/1.2 lenses because
their F mount had a small diameter.
The Canon 28-70 was probably the lens many photographers chose Canon R as their
system. I hope Canon will make something new and revolutionary again :-)

Mirrorless cameras allow for the use of often significant in camera software
correction . All makers use it to one degree or another. Making an optically
corrected lens for DSLR's is more demanding. A number of Sony lens such as the
24-105mm have dramatic vignette uncorrected , with literally black corners

Many mirrorless lenses can have extensive corrections going on an example

Sony 24mm G with and without corrections , I own this lens :-)

https://www.dpreview.com/galleries/4475337602/photos/4412826/
sony-24mm-f2-8

I am not picking on Sony as I say they all do it to one degree or another , just
happened to have this from when I was looking at buying

I have the Nikon 58mm F/1.2 , noct of old. Which I think I got in the early
1980's so difficult rather than impossible :-) Fortunately for my wallet I have
no need of either the AI II or an F/2 zoom

Well said, James (Jim?). Sony actually uses a hefty amount of barrel distortion
and vignetting correction in their lenses to achieve the low weight and
compensate for the tiny lens mount size. Nikon has the fewest software
corrections required, but the trade off is their mount is so big it can fit a
GFX sensor inside, which has its own trade-offs.

It's a compromise, the Sony lens looks to have far more distortion than the
Canon, and the effect of that is quite visible when doing focus pulls during
video.

1. this sony lens has very minimal distortion correction, less than most 24-70s
including Canons. Surprisingly even less than Canon latest primes
It also seems to extremly well corrected for vignette. Something you cannot say
about most other lenses

2. distortion correction also works seamlessly in video. So you are probably
talking about something completly differet

Don't try to deflect, it does have more distortion than the Canon equivalent,
although not significantly so.

You can see the effect for video on that in the PetaPixel breathing test: the
frame stretches/bowes when focusing to close to far because the amount of
distortion correction is baked in at a fixed distance setting.
To be fair, in real-world, doing full distance focus pulls like this is
unlikely, so in practical use it is not likely to be visible to that extent, and
this Sony lens is definitely not the worst I've seen.

Panther fan, where have you been able to access raw files to check for
uncorrected results ? . It would be a first for Sony as many of their lenses
uncorrected have either significant distortion or significant vignette . A
couple of examples

20-70mm uncorrected , heavy vignette and distortion:
https://www.dpreview.com/galleries/4475337602/photos/4451301/01245
24mm G uncorrected huge distortion:
https://www.dpreview.com/galleries/4475337602/photos/4412826/sony-24mm-f2-8
Not just Sony many/ most mirrorless lenses have software correction going on to
some degree especially the wide and UWA lenses . It is what it is and the end
result is what matters . The whatabout game is a bit daft when Sony is at least
as guilty of doing software correction , more so in a number of cases to be
honest. I have used mirrorless cameras since 2009 and used to bemoan all the
software shenanigans , but the end result is often smaller , lighter more unique
focal lengths length etc

CVP run their tests with distortion correction on (maybe it can't be turned off
otherwise I don't get why they did it like that).
So it seems that Dustin Abbott is the only one showing it. Looks acceptable, but
not without some negative side-effects.

@padam19 , whether we like it or not { I used to rant about it in the past :-) }
The lenses are designed with the use of the software profile in mind. I think
the argument is that by using software for issues like distortion and vignette
correction, the factors such as lens sharpness needing optical correction and
the like can be improved. Either way we cant avoid it as it is in an awful lot
of mirrorless lenses from most makers

I'm not strictly against it (when expensive primes start doing it like Canon VCM
series, that is starting to be a bit much - for me anyway).
I just think reviews should show it instead of ignoring the subject, and not
saying questionable statements, like: "this lens beats a Canon 28-70/2 in every
conceiveable way" because that just isn't true.

Hopefully in due course we'll see proper side-by-side comparisons, as I am
genuinely curious about how they stack up against each other.

We'll be publishing a sample gallery for this lens soon, and you'll be able to
download the Raws. As usual, the JPEGs in the gallery will have distortion
correction on (you can read why here), but all other lens corrections turned
off.

We'd have loved to publish the gallery alongside this article today, but we shot
the lens using the a1 II... and there's currently no way for us to process the
Raws for it, as Adobe Capture and Capture One don't support them yet.

@Panther fan, I asked where you saw uncorrected raw files a not unreasonable
question. Dustin Abbot is a good source thanks . His optical deep dive shows
very clear barrel distortion at the wide end and lesser pincushion at the long
end with average flare results. It is an excellent lens for those who want what
it offers. Back when I was doing wedding and event work the various fast or
longer standard zooms would have been a godsend. Now I have no need for them .
Mirrorless lens design utilizing software has enabled some amazing stuff

I appreciate that you get upset with any post that does not start with yay Sony.
The point was to show that Sony utilizes often extensive software corrections .
Which is a simple fact easily demonstrated . ALL MAKERS use software corrections
to varying degrees . Amongst FF mirrorless overall I would say Sony perhaps uses
more but it does not matter

articles, like this one about the benefits and tradeoff, of using software
correction.

Basically, it boils down to this. It gives smaller and lighter lenses, but if
you are going to do some image stacking, it ruins the end result.

If you can live with the more limited zoom ranges, the 28-70mm f/2s from Sony
and Canon and the 28-45mm f/1.8 from Sigma are SUBSTANTIALLY faster than the
more normal f/4 zooms in a way that f/2.8 zooms are not. More stop (f/4 to
f/2.8) makes a marginal difference in background blur and light gathering. Two
or two-and-a-third stops is IMO more of a game-changer.

Sure, it's kind of obvious, but I think it's also right, at least for some
folks. I'm someone who'd probably never go for an f/2.8 if there was a good f/4
alternative. With the size and price differences, mostly that aperture is not
going to matter enough to me. I'd rather combine an f/4 and primes than get a
f/2.8, since the f/2.8 won't do what a prime does.

But a lens like this actually competes with primes for aperture. And compared to
the Canon, this one in particular competes with the f/2.8s in size. Maybe the
price still keeps it out of reach, but it might have a better set of tradeoffs
for some folks.

"Other pluses for video: it has an internal focusing mechanism which should make
it easier to use the lens on a gimbal"

Do you mean internal zooming? Pretty much all zooms focus internally these days.
Or are they just saying that the focusing mechanism doesn't cause the center of
gravity to move very much, which maintains balance on a gimbal?
