AUG 30 UPDATE:

So far this year we have supported more than a thousand people apply for and
receive their birth certificates! We held sign up days in Redfern, Kempsey,
Taree, Ballina and Lismore this year as well as supporting applicants who have
applied online.

Last week we held sign up days in Wellington, Bathurst and Orange. 

Next up, we need your help to raise funds to hold signup days in the ACT in
October. 

JUNE 28 UPDATE:

With your support, we raised enough funds to host two birth certificate sign-up
days in Sydney where we received more than 450 applications for birth
certificates and registered more than 20 children over the two days! Thank you

HELP CLOSE THE GAP - SPONSOR A BIRTH CERTIFICATE FOR A FIRST NATIONS PERSON

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples whose births were never
registered or who do not have a birth certificate struggle to fully participate
in society.  

In many ways they are invisible. 

They cannot vote, legally drive, play sport, get a tax file number, enrol in
school or access government support. 

A deep-seated distrust of governments and bureaucracy, costs, remoteness, lack
of records and complicated forms are just some of the barriers our mob
experience. 

We’re trying to change that through the Pathfinders National Aboriginal Birth
Certificate Program. 

On average it costs us around $155 to get the necessary paperwork organised and
to purchase a certificate if we cannot get the fee waived. If you can afford to
donate $155 that would be amazing - but any donation is welcome. If we reach our
target of $350,000 that means more than 2200 certificates issued.

We've already helped 11,000 Aboriginal people get their birth certificate over
the past five years.

But we’ve run out of funding, which is why we've partnered with Chuffed.org to
keep it alive. 

Anything you can donate will help us help them get this vital document.  

We’ve run sign-up days in communities where there is the greatest need, and
through the support of volunteers from Justices of the Peace, Aboriginal land
and health services, and the community, we’ve tracked down records that can
satisfy the various Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages. 

In the last two weeks before we ran out of money we helped 600 Indigenous
Australians apply for their Birth Certificate. 

It’s not always simple, but we never give up. Our team of Indigenous staff know
how important this program is – they have seen first-hand the difference a birth
certificate can make. From applying for a job, starting a business, getting a
Working with Children Check, the list goes on. 

But in many ways it has a deeper impact. They know where they come from, they
can connect with their culture and community, and they are finally recognised as
a member of society. 

With your help we can work on closing the gap so please give what you can.
