Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0

The Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) is a multi-stakeholder
initiative launched by UNEP and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition. The OGMP
2.0 is the only comprehensive, measurement-based reporting framework for the oil
and gas industry that improves the accuracy and transparency of methane
emissions reporting in the oil and gas sector.

Over 80 companies with assets on five continents, representing a significant
share of of the world’s oil and gas production, have joined the Partnership.
OGMP 2.0 members also include operators of natural gas transmission and
distribution pipelines, gas storage capacity and LNG terminals.

The OGMP 2.0 data is one of the key components of the International Methane
Emissions Observatory (IMEO)’s solution to the methane data problem. IMEO is a
data-driven, action-focused initiative taking an innovative approach by
collecting, integrating, and reconciling methane data to generate a public
dataset of methane emissions levels and sources. IMEO will serve as a key
implementing vehicle of the Global Methane Pledge by creating a sound scientific
basis for methane emissions calculations.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the second largest contributor to
global warming. The oil and gas industry is one of the largest sources of
anthropogenic methane emissions, and is the sector with the greatest potential
for emissions reduction.

In 2021 alone, the global oil and gas industry wasted $19 billion of natural gas
due to methane emissions. As a result of these emissions, the climate impact of
the oil and gas industry is greater than the combined impact of every
gas-powered passenger vehicle on the planet.

We cannot meet the Paris Agreement and avoid exceeding 1.5 °C of warming without
achieving deep reductions in  methane emissions from the global oil and gas
industry. Luckily, the industry is taking action.

> Uniper already achieved a lot by applying best practice methods to keep
> emissions at the lowest possible level at our storage sites. Now, it’s time to
> increase the accuracy and granularity of methane emissions reporting across
> the entire gas value chain. This fits perfectly to our company`s commitment to
> become carbon neutral by 2035 in our European business. We are ready to curb
> methane emissions, and we will do it together. For a better, sustainable, and
> climate-proof future.

> Through our more than 56,000 km long natural gas distribution networks, we
> supply more than 776,000 households and companies with natural gas in various
> regions of Germany. We significantly influence the sustainable and therefore
> environmentally friendly energy supply in our home country and beyond. Our aim
> is to maintain the first-class network quality of EWE NETZ and at the same
> time to use further optimization potentials.
> With this drive and conviction, we joined the OGMP.

> It is our mission to make the ONTRAS network fit for decarbonisation and
> facilitate a CO2- neutral gas transport by 2050. As part of our commitment,
> ONTRAS going green we have placed the reduction of technically induced methane
> emissions at the centre of our activities in this field. By optimizing network
> operation and reducing pressure, using mobile compressors or flares, and
> making repairs during ongoing operations, we have already achieved an emission
> reduction of 68% in 2019. It is our ambition to measure, analyse, report and
> reduce all possible emissions by investing in the best available techniques.
> We are looking forward to driving our ambition forward with our new partners
> within the OGMP 2.0 framework.

> As a Naturgy subsidiary company, and the largest gas DSO in Spain, we have a
> longstanding commitment on network innovation to enhance operations, improve
> safety and to minimize the impact of our activity on the environment.  We
> salute the goals set by the European green deal to go carbon neutral by 2050,
> and we think that tackling methane emissions represents an effective lever. We
> also work on a coordinated basis with Naturgy companies around the world on an
> effort to minimize methane emissions. This is part of our sustainability plan
> to reduce GHG emissions, aligned with the 1.5ºC scenario of the Paris
> Agreement.

> Methane emissions reduction has become part of our culture. Our activities are
> based on 3 pillars: implementation of best available techniques and energy
> efficiency measures, R&D efforts to develop new technologies and collaboration
> with the industry and associations to raise awareness and commitment.
>
> Claudio Rodríguez Suárez, Enagás Gas Assets General Manager

> GRTgaz is aiming at reducing our methane emissions to a third of their 2016’s
> values. We are almost there and proud of it. We also know there is still a
> long way to go, and we intend to reach a division by 5 between 2016 and 2025.
> The people of GRTgaz and their colleagues of the other OGMP 2.0 members are
> very much aware of their responsibility to the planet and they intend to play
> their part.

> The mission of BBG is to promote sustainable development for the Basque
> country by ensuring the supply of natural gas efficiently and safely with the
> commitment to create value for all our stakeholders. To fulfil this vision, it
> is priority the reduction of methane emissions through energy efficiency
> measures, the control of the fugitive emissions and the benchmarking with
> business associations in order to look for new techniques to minimize methane
> emissions
>
> Javier López Nieto
> BBG CEO

> As a member of the energy sector, SAGGAS aims to improve its global
> performance and provide a solid base in order to develop initiatives in the
> areas of Sustainable Development, Energy and Climate Change. Saggas guarantees
> the development and the use of efficient technologies. Saggas' Carbon Strategy
> Plan 2014 – 2020 was our first goal, so that, we are on the verge of being
> more ambitious in our second Carbon Strategy Plan 2021 - 2026.
> We move forward together.

> EMPL has always given a high relevance to the environmental and social aspects
> of our Business in Morocco and, therefore, be part of this initiative is a
> great opportunity to move forward on reducing carbon emissions, meeting
> climate objectives and contributing to the vision of natural gas as an energy
> transition source.

> Equinor aims to be a leader in the energy transition and our ambition is to
> reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Equinor’s methane emissions intensity is one
> of the lowest in the industry and we are dedicated to improving our
> performance even further. The OGMP provides companies a credible and
> transparent way of improving their methane emissions reporting and
> performance. By working together with peers and partners from governments and
> civil society, we can achieve significant reductions in methane emissions from
> the oil and gas sector
>
> Anders Opedal, CEO and President of Equinor
