He has done this for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, Popular Mechanics, Mazda and Lexus customer magazines, plus a bunch of enthusiast sites and publications. And he spent several years as a staff writer at BBC Top Gear magazine. During this zig-zag of a career trajectory, he has driven everything from budget Malaysian hatchbacks (yes, they exist) to scarily expensive Italian exotica. PROS * Great to drive * Great to sit in * Nicely practical CONS * Expensive options WHAT'S NEW? * No major changes The 2023 Porsche Cayenne and Cayenne Coupe range of luxury midsize SUVs are among the finer things in motoring life, as well as some of the most entertaining vehicles in their classes. Prices start at $72,200. Sure, the Porsche Cayenne is expensive. And although rival luxury SUVs have similar levels of prestige and plushness, none of them have quite the same kind of driver appeal. Which is not to say that the Cayenne isn’t comfortable enough for family duty. It most definitely is. But for those who like that extra dimension of engagement and are happy to pay for it, the Cayenne is a top contender. 2023 PORSCHE CAYENNE PRICING The 2023 Porsche Cayenne starts at $72,200. That’s for the entry-level SUV with all-wheel drive as standard. The equivalent Coupe is priced from $80,700. The E-Hybrid SUV begins at $86,500. And the most expensive 2023 Cayenne is the Turbo GT in Coupe form, starting at $188,700. Taking one of these and being lavish with the options could easily push the final amount past $200K. For a more sensible approach to options, Platinum Editions (these are available at several trim levels of both the SUV and Coupe) bundle together popular extras for a lower price than if these features had been selected individually. * Cayenne: $72,200 * Cayenne Platinum Edition: $80,400 | Most Popular * Cayenne Coupe: $80,700 * Cayenne Coupe Platinum Edition: $84,800 * Cayenne E-Hybrid: $86,500 * Cayenne E-Hybrid Platinum Edition: $94,400 * Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe: $91,800 * Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe Platinum Edition: $95,900 * Cayenne S: $90,900 * Cayenne S Platinum Edition: $95,100 * Cayenne S Coupe: $95,200 * Cayenne S Coupe Platinum Edition: $97,300 * Cayenne GTS: $113,100 * Cayenne GTS Coupe: $115,800 * Cayenne Turbo: $135,900 * Cayenne Turbo Coupe: $139,500 * Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid: $171,300 * Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe: $173,800 * Cayenne Turbo GT: $188,700 These are manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) only and do not include the $1,450 factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge). Here’s a side-by-side comparison of 2023 Cayenne variants. For context, the BMW X5 xDrive40i starts at $63.9K, the Audi Q8 at $72.8K, and the most affordable Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class with all-wheel drive is $58,650. Or the Land Rover Range Rover Sport starts at $83K. If the idea of a new Porsche SUV sounds wonderful, but spending more than $72K isn’t so appealing, the compact Porsche Macan is fantastic in its own way and starts at $57.5K. Before buying a new Cayenne SUV or new Cayenne Coupe, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. The Cayenne enjoys strong resale values. WHAT’S NEW FOR 2023 There are no major changes for the Porsche Cayenne lineup this year. DRIVING THE 2023 PORSCHE CAYENNE Drive a 2023 Cayenne around town and you might wonder where all that legendary Porsche excitement is hiding. It’s comfortable, well-mannered and easygoing, with enough thrust to get through gaps in traffic quickly and cleanly. If that’s all anyone needs from their luxury midsize SUV, then the Cayenne delivers. On long freeway stretches where the main steering wheel action happens with on-ramps and off-ramps, the Cayenne eats up those miles. Take it to some wilder roads, though, and another aspect comes into focus. Keep some speed going through a corner, and the Cayenne retains its cool, changing direction with ease. That composure and poise stay put, even if the speeds increase. There’s something else, though. It’s the way the Cayenne responds to driver inputs — precisely, yet sweetly. The amount of effort required always feels just right. The controls are not too light, nor are they too heavy. Of course, the greater the power, the greater the thrills. But there’s nothing lacking in the base Cayenne. The automatic transmission does its job admirably, or there are shift paddles behind the steering wheel for whenever the driver feels like getting more involved. Higher trims bring things like an adaptive air suspension, variable torque distribution for optimum grip and traction, and rear-wheel steering to enhance maneuvering. The Cayenne also has excellent towing talents, able to pull up to 7,700 pounds. We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and researching the current collection of luxury midsize SUVs, including the Porsche Cayenne lineup. LUXURIOUS INTERIOR Despite Porsche’s unassailable reputation for making true driver’s machines, the company also knows how to do luxury. As illustrated by the cabin of any 2023 Cayenne. Materials and build quality are appropriately top-level, the switches feel substantial, the seats provide comfort and support for any length of journey, and space is plentiful. The scope for personalization is broad, with various color schemes offered (even including the seat belts) and upholstery materials. Cargo space in the regular Cayenne SUV measures 27.2 cubic feet behind the rear seats, opening up to 60.3 cubic feet when these seats are folded down. The plug-in hybrid versions lose some of that because of their extra hardware. Naturally, the Coupe has a little less space for rear passengers and cargo, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just a choice. The Coupe is also a 4-seater, or a 2+2 setup, rather than the Cayenne SUV’s 4+1 arrangement. In both cases, the seats after the plus sign are smaller. TWO BODY STYLES One’s an SUV and the other’s an SUV, but called a Coupe. Simple, right? Choose the 2023 Cayenne SUV for maximum rear passenger room and cargo space, or go with the sloped-roof Coupe for an extra element of style. OUR FAVORITE FEATURES AND TECH Smartphone integration Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard across the 2023 Cayenne range. The difference is that Apple CarPlay is wireless. All-wheel drive Every new Cayenne comes with all-wheel drive as standard. By providing reassurance in bad weather and excellent grip in the dry, this system allows the Cayenne to be enjoyable throughout the year. Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) Depending on the Cayenne’s speed, the headlight beams adjust their field and shape of illumination, and follow the steering. This is part of an optional Premium package. Assistance package Another options bundle, this adds a head-up display, adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance, 360-degree camera system, and a night vision feature that uses infrared technology to perceive animals or humans sooner than the headlights might. These are also available as individual extras. Rear-seat entertainment system This option includes a pair of 10.1 high-resolution/anti-glare screens, compatibility with Apple AirPlay, Google Chromecast, and Netflix (via the app). It also has an HDMI input and two sets of Bluetooth over-the-ear headphones. Burmester audio Admittedly, it’s a $7,000 option. But this 21-speaker, 1,455-watt surround-sound system is an immersive listening experience and one of the best available on four wheels. ENGINE & TRANSMISSION There are no less than seven drivetrains offered in the 2023 Cayenne SUV lineup. All of them involve turbocharging and two are plug-in hybrids. Output stretches from a perfectly adequate 335 horsepower to a wonderfully excessive 670 horsepower achieved with the aid of electrification. And it’s not just the plug-in hybrids that have an engine stop/restart function as well as coasting feature, each helping to save a little of the premium gasoline that every Cayenne requires. All-wheel drive is standard across the lineup, along with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The lithium-ion batteries in the plug-in hybrid variants provide an electric-only range between 15 and 17 miles (depending on the model), plus the ability to reach 83 mph on battery power alone. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) factors in electric range for its miles-per-gallon equivalent (MPGe) estimates. The second fuel economy figure is for when the drivetrains are in regular hybrid mode. 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 335 horsepower @ 5,300-6,400 rpm 332 lb-ft of torque @ 1,340-5,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/22 mpg 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 (S) 434 horsepower @ 5,700-6,600 rpm 405 lb-ft of torque @ 1,800-5,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/22 mpg (SUV), 16/21 mpg (Coupe) 3.0-liter turbocharged V6/electric motor (E-Hybrid) 455 total horsepower 516 lb-ft total torque EPA combined city/highway fuel economy: 21 mpg/46 MPGe Battery-only range: 17 miles 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (GTS) 453 horsepower @ 6,000-6,500 rpm 457 lb-ft of torque @ 1,800-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/19 mpg 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (Turbo) 541 horsepower @ 5,750-6,000 rpm 567 lb-ft of torque @ 1,960-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/19 mpg (SUV), 15/20 mpg (Coupe) 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8/electric motor (Turbo S E-Hybrid) 670 total horsepower 663 lb-ft total torque EPA combined city/highway fuel economy: 18 mpg/42 MPGe Battery-only range: 15 miles 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (Turbo GT) 631 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 626 lb-ft of torque @ 2,300-4,500 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/19 mpg More Porsche Cayenne fuel economy information is available on the EPA’s website. 4-YEAR/50,000-MILE WARRANTY The basic warranty on a Porsche Cayenne is four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. This includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The hybrid batteries are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles. These warranties are typical for the luxury sector. KBB VEHICLE REVIEW AND RATING METHODOLOGY Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings. We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology. Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing. Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.) We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability. I’ve owned high end cars most of my life. Porsche has the highest quality fit, finish an reliability of any car I’ve owned. The performance has spoiled me for any other car. Poor ride quality, very loud on the highway. EXTREMELY difficult to navigate car options. What takes me 4 clicks to accomplish something in the Cayenne takes me two clicks in a BMW. On the road to adjust any setting is dangerous due to the poor user interface. The voice assistant is useless as is the GPS system. The GPS is inaccurate and gives instructions a second or two late. Pros Drive, balanced power delivery, torque, FUN Cons Road noise, technology. That's it. I have owned the Cayenne, Twin-Turbo, loaded, for nearly three years now. It is an absolute beast to drive. Powertrain is over 550 HP, torque is literally insane, Burmeister stereo is fantastic, it is like riding on the back of a scalded cat. Had to replace water pump first year, under warranty, nothing else. Nothing. Not as fun; road noise is higher than other cars (huge tires), technology is about three years behind Audi, tech is not as intuitive, not a fan of the new panels on the side of the shifter; glass panel is always dirty. Not a day goes by that I don't look forward to driving it. Have owned Ferrari, several 911's, AMG's and others. My favorite: CTT. Will be buying another one to get two year ago technology next year in 2023, the drive is worth it. It handles curves better than my 2016 corvette. For the price it should come with much more standard and safety equipment. The design is very mediocre . The base could use more HP than 335. Without the soft close option you it takes 2-3x to fully close the doors. Overall the superior driving experience compared to other SUV’s justify the purchase. Pros Porsche drive characteristics. Cons None. Had this to replace my 991.2 because of family reasons. It quite a reasonable daily driver, has nearly all the practicality of a mid-size SUV that can seat 4 people quite comfortably. But the real joy is how well it retains Porsche like driving characteristics for an SUV. It really feels like a car meant for the road, and drives way sportier than most cars! Throttle has minimal turbo lag, a little bit noticeable, but fairly even application of lower end torque in contrast to my prior SUV which had more noticeable lag. The steering is very Porsche, and perhaps the sharpest in the industry- move the wheel 2mm and it turns the wheels, no dead space. The ride is a bit firm, but creates a sporty feel. Brakes match the throttle- very responsive and impressively so when decelerating from high speeds. Wind noise absolutely minimal at freeway speeds. Extremely strong confidence with the AWD, steering, and nearly no body roll on windy mountain roads. No issues with reliability, have taken for all scheduled services. Highly satisfied wit this vehicle. However, for those who value roomy second row seats or large trunk space, may want to look at alternatives. If you value a vibrant driving experience, vehicle response, and primarily have 2-4 people to transport- this is a great option!
