Earth has warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial times, and that warming is responsible for the major floods, droughts, wildfires, heat waves, and severe storms that are now regularly ravaging the planet, the report states. Founded in 1988 by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to provide governments with information about climate change and ways to address it, the IPCC has 195 member nations. A total of 234 scientists contributed to this, its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), a 3,500-page report that is the product of almost a decade of climate research worldwide. In the Paris Agreement of 2015, 195 countries pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and make concerted efforts to keep them no higher than 1.5 degrees Celsius over those levels. Of five emissions scenarios for the future outlined in the IPCC report, all reach or exceed the 1.5-degree Celsius threshold by the end of the century. In the best case, lowest emissions scenario, greenhouse gas emissions reach the net zero level by 2050, reducing temperatures below this threshold around 2075. According to the worst case scenario, with the highest level of emissions, temperatures are projected to increase four degrees Celsius by 2090. “From a scientific perspective, every degree, every part of a degree, every half of a degree, matters in terms of limiting the impacts that we will see from climate change. So at whatever level countries decide is what they’re aiming for, there are benefits and there are consequences to choosing those limits,” former IPCC vice chair Ko Barrett said in an interview with CNN. Many countries that signed the Paris Agreement have already missed deadlines for emissions cuts, putting them at risk of failing to meet the 2030 goal of reducing emissions by 40 percent over 1990 levels. Events deemed to be “virtually impossible” without climate change driven by human activity include this year’s extreme heat waves in the northwestern US and British Columbia, Hurricane Harvey’s excessive rainfall in 2017, frequent global droughts, and longer, more destructive wildfire seasons. Between November 1 and 12 of this year, the UN will hold its annual Climate Change Conference, where countries are expected to outline actions to further reduce global greenhouse gas emissions. While stating, “It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land,” the report offers hope by emphasizing it is not too late to reduce greenhouse gas emissions enough to hold the warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which would keep climate change from becoming catastrophic. Two more reports will be issued by the IPCC next year, one on the impacts of increased warming and the other on possible solutions.
