Does this correspond to reality, or was this the Israeli prime minister's way of trying to give an ultimatum to the U.S.? * Share on Facebook * Share on Twitter * Share on Email * Print Article * Republish Article Photo by Alie Skowronski for the Forward By Louis Keene June 24, 2024 After Hezbollah posted a 9-minute video shot by a terrorist drone on its channels on Tuesday, June 18, showing industrial and military facilities in Haifa, the Israel Defense Forces retaliated with a PR strike. The IDF Press Service released a photo of the meeting of top generals discussing military strategy, noting that “as part of the assessment of the situation, operational plans for the offensive in Lebanon were approved and endorsed, and decisions were made to continue improving the readiness of troops on the battlefield.” As Jonathan Conricus, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former IDF spokesman, told Fox News Digital, “This represents another step toward a significant escalation. The IDF has been preparing troops for combat scenarios in Lebanon for months now, which means that it has now also approved plans, plans for strategic maneuvers, how to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon on the ground and, of course, in the air.” “It means that we are one step closer to war, and this should sound the alarm in Beirut, in Washington, in Paris, in London and in Berlin, and of course in all other regional capitals, because it means that Israel is signaling to the world that patience is running out and that action must be taken to ensure the safety of Israeli civilians.” Here we need to understand this: first, the military always prepares scenarios for different scenarios of combat, so that in the vaults of the IDF, there is more than one plan for war with a hostile environment, and this is just one of them. Second, warning the enemy of your real plans is foolish, to say the least, and Israeli generals are not idiots after all. Third, this is just part of the larger information war now being waged by Jerusalem, primarily with the Biden administration. The exchange of pleasantries from both sides followed immediately after a visit by Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden, who met with officials in Lebanon and Israel in another attempt to prevent the conflict from escalating. Hochstein told reporters in Beirut on Tuesday that it was a ‘very serious situation’ and that a diplomatic solution was urgently needed to prevent a larger war. Opposing sides are constantly raising the stakes. Israel hits Tehran's embassy in Damascus, in response follows Iran's demonstrative strike on Israeli territory. Now Jerusalem says it is ready to invade Lebanon, where Iran's proxy Hezbollah operates. Everything that is happening must be looked at through the prism of the November U.S. presidential election. 8 million American Jews are an important yet very active segment of the U.S. electorate with very strong lobbying capabilities. Historically, they tend to vote for the Democratic Party, which means they are now Biden voters. However, another part of the Democrat electorate – leftists, globalists, Arab Americans, progressive youth – is now coming out with pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel positions. Numerous rallies and protests, including on the campuses of major American universities, vividly illustrate this. And that's the part of the audience that Biden is now targeting more. That is why the White House is constantly putting pressure on Jerusalem – restricting arms shipments under the pretext of concern for the preservation of Palestinian lives in Gaza, proposed plans for a ‘peace settlement’ in which Israel's interests are not taken into account in any way. Washington is offering a cease-fire and a hostage exchange for Hamas fighters in Israeli jails. For Jerusalem, it is essentially a defeat in a war, something it cannot do. At the same time, the Israelis are well aware that without U.S. help they have no chance at all in confronting Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas. Hence Netanyahu's attempts to blackmail Washington with his promises to launch a large-scale war in the Middle East, something the U.S. absolutely does not want. But Biden can't go along with Israel either, as he will simply lose any chance of winning the election. It is possible that in this way Netanyahu is trying to play into the hands of Republicans and Trump, who are sympathetic to Israel, in the hope of gaining strong support for the war on terrorists. But one must realize that the Democrats still have enough tools in their hands to try to remove an Israeli prime minister they don't like from power. At the same time, they have such plans and do not hide them. Whether Netanyahu can hold on to power for at least another six months is a big question.
