THE HISTORIAL JEANNE D’ARC OF ROUEN !!

In my nostalgic saga of my family visits to wonderful places in my belle France,
we found one sublime City, Take your time to visit Rouen, it is sublime to say
the least and of course , a must to visit, The gorgeous city in
the Seine-Maritime dept 76 of the region of Normandie. We have come here often
many times, and glad to finally be back again, this time from the Morbihan
breton ! . I have my wonderful memories with family visits and even if we are
fewer today, the memories lingered forever, I like to tell you about the
Historial Jeanne d’Arc of Rouen ,Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Historial Joan of Arc It is not a museum but a real spectacle-tour that
awaits you, the largest site ever dedicated to the memory of the Maid. It allows
you to immerse yourself in the judicial investigation linked to her trial and to
discover how her myth has been built over the years. Within the archiepiscopal
complex of the Notre Dame Cathedral, you are on the very spot where the two
trials of Joan were held, condemned to the stake in 1431 and rehabilitated in
1456. It couldn’t be more immersive! Projections, holograms, sound effects and
3D mapping bring history to life in the present. You become an actor and judge
of one of the greatest stories in France.

One event worth coming me think and related to the above me think,  is the Joan
of Arc Festivals: Joan of Arc is celebrated in Rouen every last weekend of May,
on the dates closest to May 30, the anniversary of her death. Shows, medieval
markets and parades enliven Rouen’s historic center while exhibitions and
colloquia revolve around the icon, assuming the traditional and historical
profile of Joan of Arc but also questioning its myth and the echo it makes
resonate in our current societies. It is a question of making these celebrations
a large-scale event, beyond the official ceremonies, associating the Rouen
heritage linked to the Maid with modern and expanded events. It is worth it for
all families with nice activities such as Juggling and singing troubadours
awaiting you around each corner !

There you go folks, a dandy, educational , nice act on the Historial Jeanne
d’Arc of Rouen, one worth the detour me think in wonderful Rouen. Again, hope
you enjoy the post as I.

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!

THE CHURCH SAINTE-JEANNE D’ARC OF ROUEN !!!

We have come here often
many times, and glad to finally be back again, this time from the Morbihan
breton ! . I have my wonderful memories with family visits and even if we are
fewer today, the memories lingered forever, I like to tell you more of the
Church Sainte Jeanne d’Arc of Rouen !!!,Hope you enjoy the post as I.

You must come to the Place du Vieux Marché and see the Church of Joan of Arc!
The church daring architecture allows to admire the stained glass windows of the
choir of the former church of St. Vincent, formerly located at the bottom of rue
Jeanne d’Arc and destroyed in 1944 during WWII. The new church appearance evokes
both a Viking boat and a fish. It was consecrated on April 29, 1979 , and it was
inaugurated on 27 May 1979 by Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, President of the French
Republic.(France).

The Church Sainte-Jeanne of Arc gives more fame of the square as it is related
to the torture of Joan of Arc who was burnt alive on May 30, 1431. The place of
public executions with the pillory and the firewall to the pyres was exhumed at
the same time as the foundations of the former church of Saint-Sauveur.  It was
on its soil that Jeanne d’ Arc  was imprisoned , judge, and burned at the stake
on May 30 , 1431. She is now a patron Saint of France, doctor of the Catholic
Church.

The Joan of Arc Church roof marries the shape of an overturned ship hull and the
nave welcomes thirteen magnificent Renaissance canopies from the formerSt.
Vincent church. These canopies are an essential step in a visit to the city of
Rouen. These thirteen canopies, created in the decade 1520-1530.  Canopy 9 to 13
illuminated the ambulatory, with the Crucifixion in the central axis. The life
of Christ, with four stained glass windows (childhood, Passion, Crucifixion and
Resurrection), illuminated the chorus. There was added the martyrdom of Saint
Vincent, patron of the Church (No. 13).

The other canopies (1 to 8) were distributed in the Chapels. The stained glass
windows 2, 3 and 4, relating to Sainte Anne and the Virgin including the
sumptuous window of the chariots-adorned the Chapelle Sainte-Anne. Canopy 3, 5
and 6 were made by the famous Le Prince workshop in Beauvais. The other ten are
attributed to workshops in Rouen, List of stained glass windows are: (13): Glass
of the life of Saint Peter, 1520-1530; Canopy of Sainte Anne, 1520-1530;  Canopy
of the Triumph of the Virgin or stained glass of the Chariots  1515 and carried
out towards 1522;  Canopy of the tree of St. Anne, 1520-1530; Canopy of the life
of Saint John the Baptist, carried out in 1526; Glass of works of mercy, made in
1520-1530;  Canopy of Saint Antoine of Padua, 1520-1530;  Glass of Saints,
1520-1530;  Canopy of Christ’s childhood and public life, 1520-1530;  Glass of
Passion, 1520-1530;  Glass of the Crucifixion, 1520-1530, former axial glass of
the Church of Saint Vincent;  Canopy of the glorious life of Christ, 1520-1530;
and Glass of the Martyr of Saint Vincent, 1520-1530.

“O Joan without sepulcher and faceless, you who knew that the tomb of heroes is
in the hearts of the living….” (André Malraux)

Below the tablets showing the voice, freedom, crowning, prisioner, and burned
stages of her life!

This Cross marks the spot where Joan of Arc was burned at the stakes in 1431.

THE WONDERFUL SIGHTS OF ROUEN !!!

We have come here often
many times, and glad to finally be back again, this time from the Morbihan
breton ! . I have my wonderful memories with family visits and even if we are
fewer today, the memories lingered forever, I like to tell you about the
wonderful sights of Rouen !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The former church Saint Nicaise was founded by Saint Ouen, Archbishop of Rouen,
in 640, it was then a chapel outside the city of Rouen, and housed the relics of
Saint Nicaise, brought from Gasny. Under Saint Louis, it is included in the
city. In 1388, it became a parish church, It had a great fire in March 9-10 1934
that left it with the only the gothic choir, The slow degradation continues
until closing the church in 2002 , and finally desaclilation in 2012, It took a
rebirth thanks to a brewery church concept with terrace and a museum space and
the brewing shop, bar , restaurant ! It is now the first church brewery in
France !! It is now closed to worship and disused since 2017. The church was
returned to worship in 1940. The modern stained glass windows are by Max
Ingrand. The concrete used for the reconstruction deteriorated badly and the
church was closed to the public at the beginning of the 21C, It is the Brasserie
Ragnar project that is selected, the project of three brewers from Normandy.
Beer will be produced and consumed there. A museum area and a 40-seat restaurant
will also be created. The stained glass windows and stones that require it will
be restored so that the place is returned in good condition in the event of a
change of activity. The structure will not be changed. The idea is to make a
kind of Rouen-style Benedictine Palace,

As an extension of the cathedral, this superb ensemble brings together the
services of the archdiocese. Very nice garden. Usually only visit it on heritage
days, but it’s worth the wait…An archbishop is the bishop of an archdiocese,
that is to say the diocese at the head of an ecclesiastical province made up of
several dioceses. The Archdiocese of Rouen is one of the oldest known bishoprics
in Gaul, the first of the bishops and then archbishops of Rouen dating from the
3C. Viking raids in the 9C caused the loss of many records in Normandy. The list
of bishops of Rouen was therefore reconstituted a posteriori, hence some gaps
and the inclusion of legendary figures. Avitien is the first bishop attested
historically since his presence is known at the Council of Arles in 314. The
bishops of Rouen received the pallium for the first time in the 8C, which earned
the privilege of its archbishops to bear the title today. honorary of primate of
Normandy. The Archdiocese of Rouen is located at 2 Rue des Bonnetiers.

The Saint-André church is a former parish church, suppressed in 1791, of which
the Saint André tower remains today. This church was located on rue aux Ours,
formerly rue Saint-André, the apse on rue Ancrière. The Saint-André church known
since 1027, became a parish church in 1124, The church was rebuilt from 1486:
the nave was rebuilt in 1521, the tower was built from 1541 to 1546 and the
large portal was completed in 1556. However, the dedication of the new building
was made in 1526, On April 30, 1791, the church was closed for worship. On
December 17, 1791, the church, the presbytery, the cemetery and the buildings
surrounding the choir were sold as national property. The church served as a
store, while the tower housed the workshop of a hunting lead foundry. In 1867,
the tower was repaired without the octagonal spire, which crowned it and removed
in 1683 by a hurricane, being reassembled. When rue de l’Impératrice (now rue
Jeanne-d’Arc) was cut in 1861, the church was destroyed and only the tower with
a height of some 35 meters was preserved.

Designed as the chapel of the adjoining Corneille high school, the church offers
vast proportions originally intended to accommodate students, teachers and
residents of the district. It is the third largest church in Rouen in terms of
volume, behind the Cathedral and the Saint-Ouen abbey. The first stone of the
building was laid by Queen Marie de Medici in 1615. A fine example of the
classical style, the main façade is decorated with four statues representing
Charlemagne, Saint Louis, Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Francis of Assisi.
Since 2016, the Chapelle Corneille has housed a 600-seat performance hall
managed by the Opéra Rouen Normandie.

Corneille: https://www.visiterouen.com/offres/chapelle-corneille-auditorium-de-normandie-rouen-fr-4134554/

Located a few steps from the Chapelle Corneille and the gardens of the Hôtel de
Ville, the Benedictine monastery is a haven of peace. The establishment has been
an integral part of the history of the city of Rouen since its foundation by the
order of the Minimes at the beginning of the 17C. With the permission of King
Henry IV, part of the church was built with materials from the ruins of the
castle of Philippe-Auguste, of which the Rouen keep remains today. The
Benedictines of the Blessed Sacrament replace the Minimes, driven out during the
Revolution, from 1802. For more than 220 years, the nuns have occupied and
animated the place, thus giving it a major role in the life of the inhabitants
of the district. In addition to the Magdala biscuit factory opened in 1937, the
monastery also offers student rooms. The monastery is not open to visitors, but
the church is accessible to everyone. Typical of 17C religious architecture, it
retains some Gothic features in its side nave. It also houses an exceptional set
of 19-20C stained glass windows which are worth a visit on their own.

building is monumental in a late Art Nouveau style, to which is added the
modernist statement of an exposed concrete structure. The clock tower is 37
meters high.

There you go folks, a wonderful array of beautiful historical and
architecturally stunning sights in Rouen, worth the walk in town , me think.
Again, hope you enjoy the post as I.

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!

THE AÎTRE SAINT MACLOU OF ROUEN !!!

We have come here often
many times, and glad to finally be back again, this time from the Morbihan
breton ! . I have my wonderful memories with family visits and even if we are
fewer today, the memories lingered forever, I like to tell you more of the
Aître Saint Maclou of Rouen ,Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Aître Saint-Maclou is a former cemetery dating from the 16C, located 186 Rue
Martainville. It is one of the few examples of such ossuary surviving in Europe,
the Saint-Maclou cemetery dates back to the black plague of 1348. As a result of
a new plague epidemic in the 16C, it becomes necessary to increase its capacity.
The parish then decided to develop galleries surmounted by attics, designed to
contain the bones.

The Aître (aster) Saint-Maclou is in the form of a large quadrilateral
surrounded by three galleries, built from 1527 to 1533 The ossuary consists of
four galleries framing a central square; it is 32 meters wide and 48 meters
long. The first three galleries are made of half-timbered construction above a
stone base, the shafts of the stone columns are carved with first Renaissance
decorations combining biblical scenes, fantastic characters and floral motifs
The sand pits and posts are decorated with macabre motifs, bones (skulls, shins,
shoulder blades), liturgical instruments or even gravedigger’s tools, with
pickaxes or coffins. The columns of the West and East galleries are decorated
with couples representing a macabre dance. You can also see a mummified cat !

The construction of the ossuary begins in 1526 by the west gallery ,the north
and east galleries are built in the following years, they are completed in 1529
and 1533 respectively, The southern gallery, on the other hand, was not
completed until 1651, following a bequest from Father Robert Duchesne, intended
to house a school for the poor boys of the parish, despite the still active use
of the cemetery. The Saint-Michel chapel was built in 1658. The first schools
date from 1661 for boys, from 1678 for girls. In 1705, the charity school,
created in these places in 1659, was entrusted to the Brothers of the Christian
Schools, an institute founded in Rouen by Saint John Baptist de La Salle. The
school was established between the Chapel of the Departed and the Chapel of
Saint-Michel. In 1705, the bones stored in the attic of the galleries were
removed. From 1745 to 1749, the galleries were raised and the attics transformed
into levels. In the 18C , 700 to 800 children were educated at the site. The
ground floor of the West wing remains open and retains its role as a link
between rue de Martainville and rue Géricault. The South wing is built for the
accommodation of priests

The Parliament of Normandy ordered the removal of urban burial sites in 1779,
following a royal ordinance. The Saint-Maclou cemetery was therefore closed in
1781, In 1911, a girls’ boarding school replaced the brothers’ school (closed in
1907). In 1927, the city of Rouen acquired the buildings, left in a state of
semi-abandonment. It set up the Norman Art Museum there which occupied the
former Saint-Laurent church, something done in 1938 after the buildings were
restored. The museum had a brief existence there since the School of Fine Arts
moved there after June 9, 1940, the fatal day of the fire in the Halle aux
Toiles, to accommodate some 200 students in its premises; they moved out in the
summer of 2014.

Today, the Aître Saint-Maclou host the Galerie des Arts du Feu which serve to
discover the arts , the galerie d’art contemporain Telmah and a restaurant le
Café Hamlet.

CHURCH SAINT MACLOU OF ROUEN !!!

Church of Saint Maclou of Rouen ,Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church of Saint-Maclou  is in city center/ downtown Rouen, and is a marvel
of Flamboyant Gothic architecture which we like a lot and always not only visit
but walked by there each time in Rouen. The church was built between 1437 and
1517. Its name is taken from Maclou who was one of the seven founding saints of
continental Brittany. He would have lived between the 6C and the 7C. First given
to the island of Notre Dame de Rouen in the 10C and the chapel also took this
name thereafter, which will be the only one on the island and whose name will
persist until our days.

A first sanctuary was built in the 10C on an island in the Seine in a marshy
area. The chapel was then raised to parish status thanks to King Louis IX in
1253. A third parish church, which was rebuilt on the first two, saw its nave
collapsing in the early 15C due to lack of maintenance, The construction will be
partially completed in 1480 before the construction of the bell tower. The
church was consecrated the following year by the Archbishop of Rouen, Georges II
of Amboise. The construction is possible thanks to the financial participation
of the parishioners which begins in 1333, as evidenced by the small cartulary.
and the great cartulary of the factory. Donations and various contributions
allow the purchase of a rood screen, ornaments of gold cloth and crimson velvet
, the construction of a new sacristy, the installation of large doors with
sculpted minds.

The plan of the church presents a non-projecting transept with respect to the
side chapels. Saint-Maclou Church retains the Norman tradition of the lantern
tower like Notre-Dame Cathedral, but in addition, it serves as a bell tower. The
83 meters spire which surmounts it was built from 1868 to 1872. The ambulatory
has no axial chapel and the choir has an apse with four sides instead of three
or five, as for most churches whose particularity is to present a pillar in the
axis of the church, It has a west façade in which opens to a rose window.  In
front of this façade is a five-bay porch arranged in an arc , surmounted by
gables. The three central bays are home to three gates, two of which are adorned
with carved wooden doors, the work of the cabinetmakers of the Renaissance. The
main portal is adorned with scenes of the Resurrection of the dead in his
covings and a Last Judgement on his eardrum,

The Saint Maclou Church preserves the Norman tradition of the lantern tower it
acts as a steeple.. The sacristy to the east of the church is a pastiche
neo-renaissance, whose marble columns are authentic and come from Italy.

in Normandie. The Abbey Church of Saint-Ouen was one of the most powerful
Benedictine monasteries in Normandy, founded in 750 under the term of Saint
Peter with the first church at this site was a Merovingian basilica; Dadon
(Saint Ouen) was buried there in 684 and then gave his name to the abbey.  In
1067, William the Conqueror  attests to a confirmation in favor of the abbey.
The body of Saint Ouen and the other relics are transferred there in 1126, The
western façade of the Abbey Church Saint Ouen  was built in Gothic style between
1845 and 1852, only the escutcheon is original , The tympan is dedicated to
the Virgin Mary.  The Abbey Church of Saint Ouen measures 134 meters long, with
a height of 33 meters under vaults, and has a superb crowned central tower that
does not have lantern of the flamboyant Gothic style. It measures 82 meters and
a structural belfry supports the bells, of which one was melted in 1701. The
nave, very bright thanks to its canopies on three levels of elevation; adjacent
to the north of the nave, stands the only gallery still existing cloister; It
has a beautiful, flamboyant network.

The Choir and the pentagonal bedside with its eleven Chapels, visible from the
garden of the town hall, is a marvel of harmony and balance, all in the radiant
Gothic style, with the exception of the northern part of the choir against which
remains a Romanesque apsidal, Called the Clerics’ tower, a vestige of the former
great abbey. The choir is closed by grates forged in 1740-1749; above the large
arcades, under the triforium, are wall paintings from the 14C. The Altar is made
of gilded brass.

The Salle des Marmosets overlaid at the gate, was once used as a charrier or
maybe  the Abbey’s archive room. In the 19C, this room served as a library, as
evidenced by the few traces of polychromies and nails. The room has an irregular
vault that is based on the bases carved with sacred and secular
scenes, The stained glass windows form a coherent ensemble, of great
homogeneity, made between the 14C and 15C. All the windows are filled with
stained glass.

The Rosary in the south arm was decorated with a tree of Jesse, a recurring
theme in this art. The north arm shows us the hierarchy. As for the façade, its
rose is adorned with a modern and abstract window, in beautiful blue hues, which
slices with the rest of the scenes. There is, however, one exception: a modern
window by Max Ingrand representing the Crucifixion that adorns the axis. The
windows of the radiant chapels there is the largest collection of stained glass
windows from the 14C in France. They illustrate for example the life of the
Saints honored in the abbey. The Abbey Church St Ouen has an organ
Cavaillon-Coll of 1890; one of the most beautiful in France

The old garden of the abbey is today called the Jardins de l’Hôtel de Ville or
City/town Hall Garden (see post), a wonderful end to a fascinating visit indeed.

you enjoy the post as I.

THE HÔTEL DE VILLE AND GARDEN OF ROUEN !!!

We have come here often
many times, and glad to finally be back again, this time from the Morbihan
breton ! . I have my wonderful memories with family visits and even if we are
fewer today, the memories lingered forever, I like to tell you more of the Hôtel
de Ville (city hall) and Garden of Rouen ,Hope you enjoy the post as I.

An interesting architecturally and historical building in Rouen is its City/Town
Hall serving since 1800 in the Place du Général-de-Gaulle , installed in the
former dormitory of the monks of the Saint-Ouen Abbey (see post), The square is
elliptical pedestrian with the representation of the signs of the zodiac and an
underground car park, As the city hall building burned down during the night of
December 30 to 31, 1926, the archives from the 1800-1926 period were burned.
Only the marriage hall and that of the municipal council were spared by the
flames. Many paintings and statues including that of Louis XV were saved from
damage. A bit of bus in Rouen and City Hall !

The Hôtel de Ville or City/Town Hall has a long history and already written
before on it so will condense the text here with new pictures. It is attested
from 1191-1192, and was located near the Saint-Éloi Church. In 1220, the city
hall was near the present rue du Gros-Horloge, The city purchase between the rue
aux Juifs, the rue du Gros-Horloge, the rue Massacre and the passage from the
rue du Gros-Horloge to the rue aux Juifs.  It is on this site that the Jacques
Gabriel building will be built. At that time and until the French revolution,
the city hall or town hall resided in the manor of Du Chastels. The building was
completed in 1529.

The Gothic building, too small and threatening ruin in 1606, the city hall was
rebuilt from June 1607 ; it was in a Florentine style in stone with bosses.  To
solve the problem of space, a project of construction of a new city hall was
decided in front of the place du Vieux-Marché, on the axis leading from the
cathedral to the hospital. Work began in 1758, but was interrupted in 1765 for
lack of money. There are still foundations in the rue Thomas-Corneille. Built
from 1717 to 1721, the Hôtel de la Première Présidence housed the city hall
offices from January 1791 to May 1800. On May 30, 1800, the city hall was moved
into the former Saint-Ouen abbey dormitories, which had been in disuse since
November 1790. In 1825, the building was transformed ; composed of two floors,
two wings and a central peristyle, which constitutes on the ground floor the
vestibule of honor, surmounted by a colonnaded box and crowned by a pediment, to
which is affixed a clock. The facade on the garden side has not been modified.
On August 15, 1865, the statue of Napoleon was inaugurated, As the city hall
building burned down during the night of December 30 to 31, 1926, the archives
from the 1800-1926 period were burned. Only the marriage hall and that of the
municipal council were spared by the flames. Many paintings and statues
including that of Louis XV were saved from damage., and the building was rebuilt
in 1928.The bombings during WWII did not spare the new construction. On April
19, 1944, the south staircase was completely destroyed by a bomb, It was
rebuilt.

The official Hôtel de Ville (City hall) of Rouen : https://rouen.fr/hotel-ville

The Jardin de l‘Hôtel-de-Ville is laid out in a portion of the former gardens of
the Saint-Ouen abbey. it is the first public garden of the city. On the vast
undulating lawn, under a place of relaxation, halfway between the urban park and
the meadow, this Jardin de l’Hôtel de Ville garden is also a pedestrian passage
that connects the city center to the Saint-Nicaise and Saint-Vivien districts.
Created at the beginning of the 19C on the land adjoining the Saint-Ouen abbey,
the gardens astonish by this mix of styles that invites discovery. Located at
the foot of the Hôtel de Ville, their historical core “à la française” radiates
around a large round pool, an aquatic setting for a sculpture evoking the
kidnapping of Dejanira by the Centaur Nessus (above pic). Note also the presence
near the Portail des Marmousets of the exact reproduction of the Jellinge stone
(below pic) in Denmark, a thousand years old, offered to the City of Rouen on
the occasion of the millennium of Normandy in 1911.

A historic garden therefore, but also a contemporary space. Separated by an
alley of chestnut trees which extends the pedestrianized rue de
l’Abbé-de-l’épée, a large playground has brought together toddlers and older
children since the extension of the garden in 1982. The lawn then descends in a
gentle slope towards the goldfish basin… And in the background, the apse of the
Saint-Ouen abbey church completes the look of the countryside. Not far from
there, are visible a stone statue of Rollon (need to tell you Rolf the Walker,
or Rollon or more rarely Robert I the Rich, born in Scandinavia around 846 and
died in Rouen around 932. Became Jarl of the Normans of the Seine and Count of
Rouen, in 911, Rollon later by expansion created the Duchy of Normandy) . and a
bronze bust of the Belgian poet Émile Verhaeren, who died accidentally in Rouen
station in 1916. Against the north wall of the garden stands a méridienne
(daybed). The monument, formerly leaning against the old City Stock Exchange, on
the quays, was moved to the garden in 1826. The monument dates from the 18C and
was commissioned by the Consuls of Rouen in 1753. The sculpted decoration
represents two allegories of trade and time.

!! He met several friends !!! Worth the detour for the whole familly indeed!

CURIOSITIES OF THE GIRONDE (33), LANDES (40), LOT ET GARONNE (47), AND
PYRÉNÉES-ATLANTIQUES 64 !!!

Once again, coming back at you with another off the beaten path gem of my belle
France. These are again road warrior passing of me in my loving south , always
with great architecture and history to boot. More older paper pictures found in
my vault and of course, they need to be in my blog. Therefore, here is my take on
the curiosities of the Gironde (33), Landes (40), Lot et Garonne (47) , and
Pyrénées-Atlantiques 64  !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Pauillac is located in the department of Gironde, 33 in the region
of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is 50 km from Bordeaux , It belongs to the Médoc
peninsula, renowned for its prestigious vineyards. The port Pauillac-La Fayette
by Quai Albert Pichon in the city center of Pauillac, The port marina was built
in 1977 to accommodate Médoc boats, but also those of yachtsmen in transit from
the Atlantic to the Mediterranean via the canal du Midi. In 1777, fleeing the
troops of the king, it was from Pauillac that La Fayette left France to reach
the Americas. There, his role will be decisive in the victory of the War of
Independence of the United States. A monument commemorates this departure on the
port/ marina of Pauillac.

Arcachon is located in the department of Gironde, 33 in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine
region. It was created in 1857 by detachment of part of the town of La
Teste-de-Buch. The Casino of Arcachon is at 164 bd de la Plage in the former
sumptuous Château Deganne since 1903, in the heart of the city center , It
vibrates 7 days a week in the popular seaside resort of stars and other
personalities. Of course, traditional games (Black-Jack, English Roulette, Boule
2000) and slot machines are a delight for regulars. Tourists also enjoy outdoor
concerts and shows in the summer. In addition, the Casino d’Arcachon has a
restaurant open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. You will also discover the
works of local artists there as part of the monthly exhibitions and enjoy the
live concerts on Saturday evenings. A nice alternative to the routine.

The town of Capbreton is located in the Landes department, 40 in the
Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, In the 15-16C, the port of Capbreton saw the
flourishing trade of “sand wines”, from the vines planted on the dunes, which
left for Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands. Today, the some 19 boats in the
port of Capbreton have maintained an artisanal fishing activity, mainly with
nets. What is less traditional, on the other hand, is that the fishermen sell
their catch of the day at the quay, without going through the auction. Indeed, a
decree signed by the hand of Colbert grants them this customary right since the
17C. To see this more closely, you have to go to the Capbreton fish market.
During the season, an electric-powered boat offers to cross the harbor basin to
connect Capbreton to Hossegor, this is the e-Boucarot, Lovely indeed !

The town of La Réunion is located in the Lot-et-Garonne department, 47 in the
Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. 3 km from Casteljaloux and 40 km from Agen, The
Château du Sendat is located in the commune of La Réunion, . There is a
fortified house from the end of the 11C. The castle was built in the 13C, but it
was largely rebuilt in the 17C and transformed between 1851 and 1867. The castle
belonged to three great families: the Montlezuns, the Montesquiou and then the
Morins. The property combines a fortified castle on the north and south fronts
with circular towers and borders an inner courtyard open to the east and closed
to the west by a 17C building. This wing is confined by two pavilions with a
central avant-corps on the courtyard side. A two-story gallery borders the north
front. The neo-Gothic style of the 19C is very present. Part of the west and
east fronts have been preserved from the medieval castle, I read the castle was
sold at the end of 2021 to a Russian lawyer , and it is a private property,
cannot be visited.

The Château de Duras is located in Duras, in the department of Lot-et-Garonne 47
and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. The origin of the occupation of the site is
at the church of Saint-Ayrard, now disappeared which was located 1,200 meters
from the castle. The first Duras castle dates from the 12C, built on a rocky
outcrop overlooking the Dropt valley. It became the property of Gaillard de Got,
brother of Bertrand de Got, Pope Clement V, probably as a gift from King Edward
I of England. who wished to have the pope’s family among his followers. The
Durfort family kept the castle until the French revolution. After the Duke of
Duras emigrated to Germany, Duras Castle was declared national property. Its
doors were forced opened and the castle was looted. The property was sold in
November 1793, except for the castle, which remained state property until 1807.
It was put up for sale on June 20, 1807, and was bought on June 27 by the last
Duke of Duras who had returned to France. The castle then passes between several
owners. The castle is deteriorating, and in 1969, was bought by the town of
Duras, which had it classified and undertook its restoration. The roof of the
wing was restored in 1975. The basements were restored in the years 1980-1990.

The town of Biarritz is located in the department 64 of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in
the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, Successively called Plage des Fous, then Plage de
l’Impératrice, the Grande Plage is the central beach of Biarritz. Located along
a promenade with terraces and cafes, it stretches over 450 meters of fine sand.
Access to this beach is easy from the Quai de la Grande Plage. To park, there is
a charge for parking at the Vinci Grande Plage (our spot) or the casino car park
, This beach is supervised from the beginning of May to the end of October.
There are also beach clubs for children and surf schools. Very nice indeed.

CURIOSITIES OF THE DORDOGNE NO 24 OF FRANCE !!!

Once again, coming back at you with another off the beaten path gem of my belle
France. These are again road warrior passing of me in my loving south , always
with great architecture and history to boot. Therefore, here is my take on the
curiosities of the Dordogne (24) !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Saint-Pierre Abbey is located in Brantôme, It is a former Benedictine abbey
founded in 769 by Charlemagne in the diocese of Périgueux. It was suppressed
during the French revolution. Today, the abbey church 11-13C, part of the
cloister 14C and the convent buildings 18C remain, which house two municipal
museums as well as the City/town hall of Brantôme. The abbey church is certainly
the oldest campanile in France. The Cave of the Last Judgment, laid out in the
150C, bathed in a mysterious atmosphere, decorated with an enigmatic triumph of
death and an Italian-inspired crucifixion, testifies to the spirituality which
animated for a millennium the community of monks of Brantôme.

The Château Fayrac is from the 15-16C and 19C built on the banks of the Dordogne
river, in the town of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, In the 14C, the castle belonged to
the lords of Castelnaud, the Caumont family. It was then called the “Fayrac
towers”. During the Hundred Years War, the Fayrac towers served as a watchtower
for the Château de Castelnaud which stood for the King of England, opposite the
Château de Beynac which supported the King of France. An entrance gatehouse with
a drawbridge giving access to the inner courtyard dates from the 15C. In 1789,
the castle was owned by a collateral branch, some of whose members had
emigrated. The castle was then seized as national property and sold. The castle
was then the property of the composer Fernand Fouant de la Tombelle, one of the
founders of the Schola Cantorum, who extensively restored it. André Malraux
lived for a few weeks at the castle when he joined the Resistance following the
arrest of his brothers, after March 1944. It is not accessible to the public,
but you can nevertheless admire it from afar while walking around.

The town of Jumilhac-le-Grand has a castle built from the 13C to the 17C now
private property, but open to visitors, The castle, under permanent restoration
by its owner, has belonged to the Chapelle de Jumilhac since the 16C and now to
their direct descendants: the La Tour du Pin. Its park is laid out as a French
garden. During the French revolution, the estate was placed under sequestration,
following the emigration of Antoine Pierre Joseph Chapelle de Jumilhac. The
castle was then occupied by the town. In 1862, the castle was sold by its heirs
in 1917, The castle was then divided into several dwellings and its outbuildings
into several shops. In 1927, it was bought by Raymond Odet Chapelle de Jumilhac
and his wife, who undertook the restoration and in whose descent are still
there.

The town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil is a former town which on January 1,
2019, it was integrated into the new town of Les Eyzies, The Château de Laussel,
is a typical Périgord haunt, former residence of the Commarques, Renaissance
style, has been extensively restored. Thus the history of Laussel merges with
that of the Château de Commarque. The two castles were both abandoned at the
same time, in the 18C. Laussel dates from the 15-16C,with machicolated towers, a
square keep, a 17C chapel and a walkway placed on stone corbels with six steps,
make it a whole, which a skilful restoration undertaken, Reported in ruins from
1738, the castle was completely restored at the beginning of the 20C. Private
property of a family, it includes a troglodyte dovecote, hanging gardens, a
chapel, a prehistoric shelter.

The town of Loupiac gave its name to the AOC loupiac (sweet wine), One of the
greatest “sweet wines of the Right Bank” in Bordeaux , History has it that it
was while tasting a 1929 vintage of Château de Ricaud Loupiac in a great
Parisian restaurant that Alain Thiénot fell under the spell of this wine: a
gustatory thunderbolt that made him owner of the estate. Since 2007, it has
relied on the expertise of the Dourthe teams, who manage this 66-hectare
vineyard today mainly planted with red vines, The town of Loupiac is located in
the Bordeaux attraction area on the right bank. from the Garonne river, 37 km
from Bordeaux, 11 km from Langon, and 2.5 km from Cadillac, Out of sight, on a
hillside in Haut Loupiac, nestles the magical château de Ricaud. This 15C castle
passed through the hands of multiple families according to historical alliances.
It is then a real reconstruction in a neo-Gothic style. The result is a fairy
tale: strange gargoyles, slender turrets, crenellations offer a most suggestive
atmosphere, in this park with 300-year-old trees. It was between 1882 and 1910
that a vineyard of nearly 20 hectares was built. Bought in 1980, Château Ricaud
is part of a vast restructuring plan. The castle is not open to visitors.

The town of Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne is about 40 km from Bergerac, and 75 km
from Périgueux, This is where Michel de Montaigne was born and died. The main
activity is the vineyard and wine resources. Its wine, Le Montravel (AOC), is
relatively unknown, but deserves to be found on the big tables! The Château de
Montaigne, dating from the 16-17C. Opposite, the Tour de Montaigne is also open
to visitors… It houses the library of the famous philosopher and it is in this
tower that he wrote his Essays. Moreover, a bottle of wine, made at the castle,
bears the name of this world-famous work. The castle itself renovated is a 19C,
inspired by Viollet-Le-Duc with its mixture of neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance.
It was Pierre Magne, a lawyer originally from Périgueux and then Minister of
Finance under Napoleon III, who acquired the estate in 1860 and had it rebuilt
like a 19C castle, witness to architectural styles from different periods. The
latter was destroyed in 1885 by a fire but rebuilt a year later by the daughter
of the minister, Marie Magne. Visits are only accessible by guided tours.

The Château de Roquetaillade is located on the territory of the town of Mazères,
This castle which appears in history in the 12C is split in the 14C by the
construction of a new castle restored between 1864 and 1878, Today,
Roquetaillade is made up of two castles within the same enclosure: the “old
castle” whose stone remains date back to the 10C; the “new castle” which dates
from the beginning of the 14C. Built at the request of Gaillard de La Motte,
nephew of Pope Clement, it was fitted out twice, notably in the 19C by
Viollet-le-Duc, who undertook numerous decorations there. It is inhabited by the
same family since 1306 !! While Roquetaillade has never been sold and has always
been transmitted by inheritance, the family name has changed three times since
its origins , In 1864, their son, the Marquis Lodoïs de Mauvesin and his wife
Geneviève, born in Galard-Béarn, inherited Roquetaillade. They were the ones who
carried out the major interior fittings carried out by Viollet-le-Duc. Having
lost their only child, the Mauvesins passed on Roquetaillade to their cousin
Hippolyte de Baritault, whose family still maintains the château today, At
Roquetaillade Castle there has been the setting for several films, including
Fantômas contre Scotland Yard with Jean Marais, Mylène Demongeot and Louis de
Funès !!, The Pacte des loups or pact of the wolves with Vincent Cassel, Doctor
Popaul with Jean-Paul Belmondo, The Seducers with Roger Moore. It is also seen
in certain series such as La Poupée sanglante or the bloody doll by Marcel
Cravenne (1976) after Gaston Leroux: it is the castle of the Marquis de
Coutleray, which is in Vendée in the plot. The Highlander series also makes a
detour to Roquetaillade. Indeed.

MY CURIOSITIES OF HAUTE GARONNE DEPT 31 OF FRANCE !!!

I will take you south deep French country on my road warrior rides of older days
when visiting even from FL USA we were on rental cars and passing rather
quickly, I love castles and cannot sense or see them without stopping by even
for one shot picture, I am looking at my vault in my new environment and found
me some older paper pictures of driving in my dear late wife Martine paternal
family side and of course, they need to be in my blog for the memories of
always, Therefore, will group them here in my curiosities of Haute Garonne dept
31 of France !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The town of LHerm had five castles with the Castrum in the center of the town
and the castles of the domains of Jottes, de la Serreuille, Mona and Villières.
Only two castles remain: the Château de Jottes (see pic) ,and the Château de la
Serreuille. These are private properties, cannot be visited. The Château de
Jottes and its outbuildings, the first mentions of which date from the 11C, are
almost entirely built of brick. During the Belle Époque, it had an important
social life, as evidenced by the vast ballroom on the ground floor. The fire of
1997 destroyed an important part of the castle and especially its remarkable
furniture. Its square inner courtyard, used for shows, has monumental
proportions. The castle of Jottes at the end of the 12C,in the castrum occupied
the present place of the church, the moats encircling it have become the
thoroughfares in the heart of the town ; they restore luster and splendor to the
castle. They fitted out four guest rooms furnished in a Napoleonic style,
restored the rotunda, the large ballroom with giant hangings, where once lavish
parties were held. The castle is an ideal setting for weddings and seminars.

The Château de Laréole is a Renaissance castle dating from the 16C located in
the town of Laréole in the canton of Cadours, it was built in 1579, During the
French revolution, the castle changed hands several times, then it was abandoned
from 1922. In 1984, in order to preserve the heritage, the General Council of
Haute-Garonne bought the property. A jewel of the Renaissance, the Château de
Laréole is a splendid building surrounded by a French-style park. The castle was
built with a square plan, with a central courtyard flanked by four corner
towers, whose walls alternate brick and stone. In the Commons are a bookstore
and a reception area offering documentation and information on Laréole and its
surroundings as well as the Lucien Vieillard room. Many artists take over the
premises during contemporary art exhibitions or during the “31 summer notes”

The Château de Launac is located in the town of Launac, 30 km from Toulouse. It
was originally a fortress erected by the Count of L’Isle-Jourdain, Jourdain III
de l’Isle. Several capitouls of Toulouse succeeded one another at the head of
the barony of Launac.  The Château de Launac, a 12C medieval fortress protected
as a historical monument, is surrounded by an enclosed one-hectare park with a
superb view of the nearby lake. Nestled in the heart of the village, facing the
church of Launac, you will be seduced by its majesty and its quiet strength.

The château of Pibrac is located in the town of Pibrac, located 13 km from
Toulouse, It was rebuilt in 1540 to replace the former defensive manor with a
pleasure residence In the 16C, the castle was the birthplace and then vacation
spot of Guy du Faur de Pibrac, who was notably president of the Paris Parliament
and author of the Moral Quatrains and the Pleasures of Rustic Life. During the
French revolution, in 1794, the sculptures were hammered and the towers
uncrowned. The castle was restored in 1887 and then in 1898-1905. The park of
the Château de Pibrac, open to the public at certain times of the year, was
designed in a very refined style by the landscape architect Eugène Bühler in
1897, with terraces, a pond and wooded beds over 14 ha. It is an English park,
and an irregular garden. The Henri IV Gate, a red brick triumphal arch, is
located in the park.

The town of Loubens-Lauragais is historically and culturally, a town in the
Lauragais, the former “Land of Plenty”, linked both to the culture of pastel and
the abundance of productions, and “breadbasket of Languedoc”. It is located 28
km from Toulouse, The castle of Loubens-Lauragais, went from an austere
residence to a pleasant residence typical of the 16C. From this period dates in
particular the beautiful stair tower. The lords of Loubens are important figures
in the region, and over the years have acquired many small lordships such as
that of Auriac. After the French revolution, the castle was abandoned but in the
19C it came back to the second golden age of the castle, since the Loubens
estate brought together a total of 200 ha of land! The current owners of the
castle are the descendants of the Gounon-Loubens. Group visits are guided by the
owners and are by reservation all year round. The visit includes the vaulted
underground pantrys, the grain attics in the communs, now turned into an
exhibition space where Jules de Gounon-Loubens travel notebooks are presented,
the furnished apartments of the castle: the reception rooms, the guards room,
the kitchen, the Capitoul bedroom, the library, etc. A historical video or slide
show presentation that on demand can be in English completes the visit. The
garden and the park, where you will wonder around discovering the terrace, many
centenarian trees, the prairies, the great grove, the fountain, etc.
