SAFIA FARKASH: EX-NURSE WHO GADDAFI LOVED ‘AT FIRST SIGHT’ AT HOSPITAL

Esther JohnOff

Although the late Muammar Gaddafi was said to have a preference for surrounding
himself with young ladies, he was married to only one woman at a time. Being
married to just one woman at a time was probably due to the way that Safia
Farkash – his second and final wife – cared for and remained loyal to him until
his death.

So, who is Safia Farkash, the woman that captivated the hardman Gaddafi to the
extent that he fell in love with her “at first sight”?

SAFIA FARKASH BIOGRAPHY

Safia Farkash was born on 2 May 1952. However, there are conflicting stories
about her ancestry.

The first story is that Farkash was born in Bayda and hails from a family of the
Barasa tribe of Eastern Libya. The other account claims that Farkash was born as
Zsófia Farkas in Mostar, a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, to Hungarian parents.

CAREER

Before she became Mrs Gaddafi, Farkash worked as a nurse in Libya. She worked at
a hospital in Tripoli, the Libyan capital.

Initially, Farkash kept a low profile when she got married to Gaddafi. However,
after the Lockerbie bomber, Abdul Baset Ali al-Megrahi, was released on parole
in 2009, the then-First Lady of Libya came to the fore in Libya. She planned a
celebration for the anniversary of the revolt that put her husband in power in
1969, which was reported by the local media. She also attended the graduation of
female police students in 2010.

Farkash was elected vice president of the African First Ladies Organization in
2008 at an African Union summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, even though she was not in
attendance at the election and never participated in any of the events that
followed the summit.

Buraq Air, an airline company is owned by Farkash. The company operated
following the approval of her husband, even though it was a rival of the Libyan
national carrier. During the reign of Gaddafi, Buraq Air reportedly monopolised
the transfer of Libyan Hajj pilgrims to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

SAFIA FARKASH, THE FIRST LADY

Farkash served as First Lady of Libya from 1970 to 2011.

SAFIA FARKASH NET WORTH

Farkash’s net worth is estimated to be between $1 million to $5 million. Her
income source is mostly from her business ventures, as well as from some of the
resources bequeathed to her by her late husband.

FAMILY

When Gaddafi was being treated for appendicitis at a Libyan hospital in 1970,
Farkash – a nurse in the same facility – met him for the first time. The duo
subsequently got married in Tripoli the same year, thereby becoming the second
woman the Libyan strongman had married.

Farkash gave birth to seven children for Gaddadi. Her oldest son, Saif al-Islam
Gaddafi, an architect who was long thought to be Gaddafi’s replacement, was born
on June 25, 1972. He has negotiated accords with Italy and the United States and
served as a spokesperson for Libya to the West. Politically, he was thought to
be moderate, and in 2006, he briefly left Libya after criticising his father’s
administration.

He returned to Libya and his father’s good books and served as an advisor to the
Libyan leader. Following the collapse of the Gaddafi regime in 2011, Saif was
captured by Libyan rebels in November 2011. He was sentenced to death in
absentia by a court in July 2015 but was subsequently released a year later by
the rebels that arrested him. He still has a 2011 arrest warrant issued by the
International Criminal Court (ICC) for charges of crimes against humanity
against the Libyan people, for killing and persecuting civilians hanging over
his head.

Farkash’s second son, Al-Saadi Gaddafi, a former professional football player,
was born on May 25, 1973. He signed for clubs in Italy, including Perugia,
Udinese and Sampdoria. His football career did not reach the heights he would
have hoped, failing a drug test after playing a single game for Perugia.
Following the overthrow and death of his father in October 2011, Al-Saadi fled
Libya and sought refuge in the Niger Republic. He was granted asylum on
humanitarian grounds by the Niger government in November 2011.

He was eventually extradited to Libya in March 2014 and stood trial for unlawful
imprisonment and murder for the 2005 killing of the football player and coach,
Bashir al-Riani. He pleaded “not guilty” and was discharged from the charge of
murdering al-Riani. After he was released from custody in September 2021,
Al-Saadi moved to Turkey. Like his elder brother, Al-Saadi is yet to make
himself available to international courts following the Interpol notice issued
against him in 2011.

Mutassim Gaddafi was born on 18 December 1974. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in
the Libyan Army and later became his father’s National Security Adviser.
Mutassim was killed along with his father at the battle of Sirte in October
2011.

On September 20, 1976, Hannibal Muammar Gaddafi breathed for the first time. He
worked for the General National Maritime Transport Company, which specialised in
oil exports. He gained notoriety for his aggressive behaviour in Europe,
including beating police officers in Italy in 2001, driving under the influence
in 2004, and hitting his girlfriend in Paris (2005). He was detained by Swiss
authorities in 2008 after being accused of assaulting two members of the staff
there. Not much has been heard of him since 2011.

As Farkash Gaddafi’s only female child, Ayesha Gaddafi was born on December 25,
1977. She is a lawyer who worked on the defence teams for the late Saddam
Hussein, the deposed former president of Iraq; and journalist Muntadhar
al-Zaidi. She got married to Ahmed al-Gaddafi al-Qahsi, a cousin of her
father’s, in 2006. The couple had four children, as of 2011. NATO airstrikes on
her brother’s compound resulted in the deaths of two of her children, her
husband and one of her brothers on 30 April 2011. After the deaths of her
husband and two children, she gave birth to her fourth child on August 30, 2011,
in Algeria. She reportedly lives in either Oman or Jordan currently.

Saif al-Arab Gaddafi was born in 1982. He was wounded in the U.S. bombing attack
of 1986 when he was four years old. He had multiple run-ins with the law when he
lived in Europe, especially in Germany. He returned to Libya at the start of the
uprising against his father’s regime and was given a leadership position in the
Libyan Army. He was killed on 30 April 2011 after his home was bombed by a NATO
airstrike.

On May 27, 1983, Khamis Gaddafi, Farkash’s sixth and youngest son, was born. He
was appointed as the leader of the Khamis Brigade of the Libyan Army. Khamis was
reportedly murdered on August 29, 2011, in Tarhuna during battles with National
Liberation Army soldiers.

Farkash and Gaddafi also reportedly adopted two children: Hanna and Milad.

WHERE IS SAFIA FARKASH NOW?

Not much has been heard from Farkash since her husband’s death in 2011. She
sought asylum in Algeria with her daughter, Ayesha, who lost her husband and
three of her children in 2011.

It was reported that Farkash and her daughter left Algeria in October 2012 for
Oman, where they have been granted political asylum.
