KATHMANDU, Nov 27: The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and
the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) have
signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote
climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable development in the Hindu Kush
Himalaya (HKH) region.

The HKH, known for its diverse population and unique yet fragile ecosystems, is
facing escalating challenges from climate change, pollution, and biodiversity
loss. These crises highlight the urgent need for agricultural practices that not
only provide nutritious food for the region’s growing population but also
protect its natural resources.

The collaboration between IFPRI and ICIMOD combines complementary strengths.
IFPRI brings decades of expertise in agricultural policy and food systems, while
ICIMOD contributes deep knowledge of the HKH region and extensive connections
with its mountain communities. The partnership will focus on conducting research
to tackle climate challenges, exploring opportunities for sustainable
livelihoods, and developing actionable solutions for the region's eight member
countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and
Pakistan.

Dr. Shahidur Rashid, South Asia Director at IFPRI, said the partnership builds
on the strengths of both organizations. “By aligning our expertise, we aim to
create strong policy frameworks that enhance resilience and improve livelihoods
for millions of people across the region,” he stated.

Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Pema Gyamtsho, Director General of ICIMOD, expressed
optimism about the partnership’s potential. “Collaborating with IFPRI will
strengthen our research, innovation, and outreach. Together, we aim to equip
member countries with practical solutions to build resilience and ensure food
security,” he remarked.

The partnership will address key priorities such as building capacity for
climate-resilient agriculture and food systems, researching climate challenges,
and identifying sustainable livelihood opportunities. It will also assess the
impacts of climate change on agriculture, incomes, and mountain ecosystems while
emphasizing the development and dissemination of knowledge on climate-smart
agriculture. The collaboration will extend to global partnerships to advance
sustainable development in mountain regions.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing the critical
challenges facing the HKH region, offering hope for a more sustainable and
resilient future, according to a press statement issued by ICIMOD on Wednesday.
