TAIWAN EMBRACES HUMAN RIGHTS  FREEDOM DEMOCRACY

Taiwan is a democratic country located in East Asia. The Chinese Communist Party
likes to claim that Taiwan is a “renegade province.” In reality, Taiwan has
never been under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.

Taiwan is a responsible global partner, with strong human rights, peaceful and
prosperous. Taiwan would like to contribute to the international community, but
continues to be isolated due to China’s geopolitical bullying.

Taiwan’s exclusion from international bodies stands in stark contrast to its
lively democratic system, energetic civil society, and leadership across a
variety of human rights issues. Although it has long fulfilled the criteria for
a nation-state as defined in the Montevideo Convention, Taiwan has been barred
from entry to the UN as a result of political aggression and scaremongering from
the People’s Republic of China.

Join us to support Taiwan’s meaningful participation and inclusion in the United
Nations and its subsidiary organs. Join us to keep Taiwan Free.

24

Million freedom-loving people in Taiwan. While Taiwan may look like a small
country, it has approximately the same population as Australia

15

FORMAL DIPLOMATIC ALLIES. CHINA'S GEO-POLITICAL BULLYING HAS ISOLATED TAIWAN
FROM THE GLOBAL ARENA. AS SUCH, TAIWAN IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE
"INTERNATIONAL ORPHAN."

93/100

THE TOTAL SCORE FOR TAIWAN'S PRESS FREEDOM AND CIVIL LIBERTIES ACCORDING TO
FREEDOM HOUSE'S 2020 FREEDOM IN THE WORLD REPORT, MAKING TAIWAN THE SECOND
FREEST COUNTRY IN ASIA AND 25TH IN THE WORLD.

TAIWAN REMAINS EXCLUDED FROM THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

Join us as we urge like-minded friends to stand with us to echo these three main
demands:

The United Nations should take immediate action to resolve the inappropriate
exclusion of Taiwan’s 23.5 million people from the UN system.

The United Nations should ensure that Taiwan has the right to participate in an
equal and dignified manner in meetings, mechanisms, and activities related to
the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals,
allowing Taiwan to make greater contributions to international health, peace and
security.

The United Nations ‘s discriminatory policy against Taiwan passport holders and
journalists violates fundamental human rights. The UN’s policy should be
rectified immediately.

CHINA HAS THREATENED WAR LOBBED MISSILES BOUGHT SILENCE

For several decades, in addition to attempting to erase Taiwan’s very existence,
China has also relentlessly threatened to annex Taiwan. The reason is simple
—Taiwan’s vibrant democracy and engaged civil society pose a threat to the
Chinese Communist Party’s legitimacy within China’s own borders.

+$178B

CHINA'S 2020 YEARLY DEFENSE BUDGET HAS INCREASED MORE THAN $178 BILLION USD. THE
CENTER FOR STRATEGIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES' CHINAPOWER PROGRAM INDICATES
THAT THE COUNTRY'S DEFENSE SPENDING HAS INCREASED NEARLY SEVEN-FOLD OVER THE
PAST 2 DECADES. THIS IS ALARMING, ESPECIALLY SINCE THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY MORE
THAN 2,000 CHINESE MISSILES AIMED AT TAIWAN.

177/180

CHINA RANKED ONE OF THE LOWEST SCORES IN PRESS FREEDOM ACCORDING TO REPORTERS
WITHOUT BORDER'S 2020 WORLD PRESS FREEDOM REPORT. THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY
HEAVILY CONTROLS THE MEDIA AND ACCESS TO INFORMATION IN ORDER TO MONITOR ALL
ASPECTS OF CIVIL SOCIETY. THIS HAS RESULTED IN SEVERE LIMITATIONS OF FREEDOMS OF
EXPRESSION AND SPEECH.

10/100

CHINA HAS RECEIVED AN ABYSMAL RATING IN FREEDOM HOUSE'S 2020 FREEDOM IN THE
WORLD REPORT. THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY'S BLATANT DISREGARD FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
AND RULE OF LAW IS A THREAT TO INTERNATIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY. IT IS TIME FOR
COUNTRIES TO TAKE A STRONG STANCE, AND SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE THAT CHINA'S HUMAN
RIGHTS ABUSES WILL NOT ESCAPE ACCOUNTABILITY.

SOME WORDS OF SUPPORT FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD

Even in the face of adversity and intimidation, the people of Taiwan persevere
and thrive, standing as a shining example for the People’s Republic of China and
countries across the Asia-Pacific region.

JAMES (JIM) P. MCGOVERN

U.S. REPRESENTATIVE, AND CO-CHAIR OF THE CONGRESSIONAL EXECUTIVE COMMISSION ON
CHINA

…the people of Taiwan remain hopeful for their future, and I am proud to stand
with them…

Now more than ever, it is imperative that the world’s leaders and the free
societies they lead take a stand against those who violate and abuse human
rights.

BEN CARDIN

U.S. SENATOR

Taiwan’s development of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law has been a
success story celebrated around the world. Nevertheless, under relentless
pressure from the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan is increasingly excluded
from formal participation in the international community…

The international community, led by the United States and like-minded
democracies, must stand up to these bullying tactics.

STEVE CHABOT

U.S. CONGRESSMAN, FOUNDING CO-CHAIR OF THE CONGRESSIONAL TAIWAN CAUCUS

TAIWAN'S FUTURE MUST BE DETERMINED SOLELY BY THE TAIWANESE PEOPLE.
