It's probably the most out-of-the-box civ in the franchise's history, and
playing it is a whole new experience.įiraxis has also thrown in a group of new
historical scenarios: the lackluster American Civil War, and the Scramble for
Africa. Essentially a playable city-state that can never found or annex new
cities, Venetians rely on the ability to build double the number of trade routes
as anyone else, which becomes a licence to print money in the late game. Of the
nine new civilizations added for this expansion, I was especially captivated by
Venice. The new systems take Culture Victory from probably the most boring way
to end the game to one of the most active and engaging. Tourism is generated by
Great Works of Art, Writing, and Music, each created by a new or revised form of
Great Person. Doing so with all remaining civs is the new means of achieving
cultural victory. If your Tourism outpaces their Culture, you can eventually
become Influential among their people. The other new mechanic is Tourism, a
resource that opposes the culture value of other civs. Now coming into play in
the late Renaissance/early Industrial era (when things used to bog down), the
nations of the world and their city-state allies can vote on measures like
banning nuclear weapons, building cooperative wonders, or embargoing a given
civ-with truly devastating economic consequences, given the moneymaking
potential of the new trade route system. The most noticeable chunk of these
improvements comes in the form of the World Congress, an expansion of the United
Nations that was (and still is) the path to diplomatic victory. Overhauls to the
cultural and diplomatic victories have made achieving either of these a more
hands-on, aggressive process that will keep you making meaningful decisions and
planning ahead. Brave New World creates an endgame that is as varied, textured,
and tense as the early and mid game already were. The new mechanics added in the
previous expansion, Gods and Kings, grow less relevant, and you're either well
on your way to your chosen victory condition, or pretty far from it.
Civilization V was always the most fun just before the end of the Renaissance,
with the experience sliding into a slog post industrialization.

I can give a guest a proper Martini and other classic cocktails like in a fine
Ginza cocktail bar in Tokyo, and at the same time, we can serve a simple drink
like a boilermaker. I love dive bars and my neighborhood bars, so that’s what I
wanted to do. What was your aim for the bar when you opened Katana Kitten in
2018?I have so much love for American cocktail culture. That’s where I met and
got to work with Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez, who still constantly inspires me
today. I’m grateful for the opportunities that Naren and the Saxon + Parole bar
team brought to me. Joining Naren’s team at Saxon + Parole was my turning point,
going back to school from comfortably slinging vodka soda and Jack and Coke.
Saxon + Parole was all about Naren Young and Linden Pride, these very unique
talents from Australia. It used to be about how we can make faster and easier,
and then what makes something fresher and more delicious. But Saxon + Parole
changed everything for me. It was a very high-volume, late-night space.

I got a job at a place called Kingswood, which is where The Happiest Hour is now
in the West Village, thanks to my friend Paul Franich. And there were already
places like Milk & Honey, Pegu Club, and Angel’s Share, which had been around a
long time.

It was 2008 when I moved to New York, and I was mesmerized by so much diversity
in terms of style of different bars and restaurant bars. How did it compare to
the cocktail scene you experienced when you moved to the U.S.? And how did your
time behind the bar at Saxon + Parole influence your approach to bartending?It
was completely different! When I was in Japan bartending, it was all classic
cocktails and reading and following the classic recipe from the book. So,
without being disrespectful to that, I try to look at how I can make it better,
and carry the integrity of the product and give it to people. The Japanese
approach really looks at the details and the story behind something, while
respecting the existing conditions. I feel fortunate to have my Japanese
countryside upbringing as a background. In the book, I emphasize that I’ve only
been in this industry for 20 years, and so many people came before me-bartenders
and bar owners who know and have done better than myself. To me it is a constant
(self) reminder about what I do day to day, particularly the same task, but to
make it better than yesterday, or to just try to notice small differences or a
defect that can be improved. It’s a Japanese word that is best described in
English as “continuous improvement.” Kaizen is something embraced by many
companies, from whiskey makers to car manufactures to a bakery in your
neighborhood, and individuals like my dad, who was a strong influence. What, to
you, defines the Japanese approach to bartending and cocktails?Something that
comes to my mind first is called kaizen. I just tried to make sure I wasn’t
doing anything stupid. I went from delivering pizza and pouring from a soda gun
at a karaoke bar, so it was a 180-degree shift. What hooked me was the
professionalism-all these servers and maître d’s and sommeliers-it was just a
glamorous environment. But I was just 19 years old and had no idea what I was
doing. A place like that requires not only skills and knowledge about fine
dining, but maturity. One of my first jobs was delivering pizza, but I got a job
interview at a fine-dining restaurant called Tableaux, which was one of the most
popular restaurants for international clientele in Tokyo at the time. What
hooked you about the profession?Masahiro Urushido: I’m from a small town called
Minowa in Nagano Prefecture in the countryside, but I moved to Tokyo when I was
18 to finish high school. You began bartending while still living in Tokyo. We
connected with Urushido to chat about the inspiration behind the book, how he
interprets the Japanese style of bartending, and how the hospitality industry
has defined so much of his life experience. This June sees the release of
Urushido’s first book, with co-author Michael Anstendig, The Japanese Art of the
Cocktail. A loving amalgamation of American dive bar and Japanese culture, the
bar-and its cheeky name-represents Urushido’s own approach to the industry,
equal parts precise and playful. The following summer, Katana Kitten was named
Best New American Cocktail Bar at the Spirited Awards at Tales of the Cocktail,
and it had landed on the World’s 50 Best Bars list. When Masahiro Urushido
opened the West Village bar Katana Kitten in the summer of 2018, he was already
well-known in the industry from his seven years behind the bar at Saxon +
Parole.

BOOKED AND BLESSED

I bet you I won’t be late for that flight tomorrow!īut there comes a time in
life when you have to admit you need another set of eyes and another brain to
help you out. I guess it’s ‘ok'(?) to think you’re about to miss a flight or
meeting, only to find out it is, in fact, scheduled for the next day. I’m
normally a proponent of doing it on my own, but no more! Doing it on my own has
me rushing to go to stuff at the wrong time ( this happened once before, with
another interview last week).

One of her first assignments: Getting a physical calendar book for me that
enumerates all my engagements, and also reaching out to people, from hair to
makeup to whatever, to help get me organized. Waking up at 5am doesn’t help
either.īut there is hope! I recently got a new assistant, who is open to doing
things for me. Stressed and worn out are just a few words to describe my #Mood.
I’m trying to get that Oprah, which means I’m saying YES to a lot of invitations
and opportunities that could help advance my career. Every single week in
August, I am booked and double booked, whether I’m speaking at, reporting on, or
hosting an event. Frazzled and Stressed, I returned back home, which is where I
sit as I type. As I approached departures, I got a call from Pierre, who said…,
“ Claire…the flight is tomorrow.” Face Palm. Pierre and I were invited to attend
and cover street style I’m also speaking on a panel!Īt any rate, I was running
behind, and I was only a few minutes away from the airport (though it was
looking doubtful, I was probably going to miss it!). This morning, I raced to
pack my bags and rush off to Newark for a flight to Baltimore for the National
Urban League Conference.

As the review dragged on, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
began considering a proposal to change the words for four letters in the IATA
version (“C,” “M,” “U,” and “X”), and debated over whether or not to change

NATO phonetic alphabet helps avoid ambiguity and makes it clear what the letters
are, she says.

“Especially in contexts that are noisy or when you can’t see the talker, ” such
as over a radio with background noise or interference.

For example, the sounds “ th” and “ f” are very similar (thin, fin) and easy to
confuse, as are “ m” and “ n” sounds, she explains. “Many sounds are highly

DID THE QUEEN MOTHER BUY A CASTLE ON THE COAST IN SCOTLAND

Today, the castle is still kept in the same way that the Queen Mother had left
it.

After significant reparation works, she created a much loved holiday home which
she returned to every year until her death. When the Queen Mother bought the
castle, it was in a bad state of repair. Queen Victoria bought it in 1952. She
fell in love of Castle Mey at first sight. When he died in 1889, the castle was
bequeathed away from the Sinclair family. The last Sinclair to live at Castle
Mey was the 15th Earl of Caithness. Built in the late 16th century by George
Sinclair, the 4th Earl of Caithness, it was occupied by his descendants for over
300 years.Ĭastle Mey’s colourful history includes the dark deeds by its early
owners as well as the eccentric activities of later occupants such as the 14th
Earl, who brought the first steam car to this part of Scotland in 1860. Visit
Glamis Castle to discover over 1000 years of history. Castle of MeyĬastle Mey is
a historic castle with spectacular views across the Pentland Firth towards
Orkney. Glamis Castle is the setting of Shakespeares Macbeth and beloved home of
the Queen Mother. The gardens are definitely worth visiting and our only
disappointment was not having more time to appreciate the hundreds of species of
plants and beautiful flowers in it. The garden is very much a working garden and
during the Queen Mother’s summer residence, it provided the fruit and vegetables
for the kitchen as well as the flowers for the castle. All throughout the
garden, the Queen Mother’s personal touch can be seen, from the greenhouse to
the floral displays in the Shell Garden where she loved to sit – you can see
Tony taking snaps of the Castle from the Queen Mother’s favourite bench. Behind
the protection of the Great Wall of Mey is a beautiful and traditional Scottish
garden full of lovely and interesting flowers, fruit trees and herbs. Our visit
began at the walled garden, which was much loved by the Queen Mother. Walking
through some of the narrow corridors and spiral staircases, it became clear why
our group of forty had to be split into three smaller groups. We were fortunate
to be able to see the castle, in its magnificent setting on the Caithness Coast,
in the brilliance of the late afternoon light, and to have photos with blue
skies.Ĭastle Mey is not a big castle. Thankfully, the sun shone for us during
our stop at the Castle of Mey. On our travels around Scotland the weather ranged
from intermittent grey skies to rain and sunshine.

application. The Cintiq 18sx works with both Windows-based PCs and Apple's
(nasdaq: AAPL) Macintosh computers, as well as workstation computers from
Silicon Graphics (nyse: SGI) and Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW), and connects
through either the serial port or the universal serial bus port. A single cable
that provides both power and video, and feeds input from the screen to the
computer, prevents any annoying tangles of cables.

The screen can also be removed from the stand and positioned in a lap or flat on
a table. It can also incline to angles of between 13 and 70 degrees as needed.
The screen is situated on a rotating stand that allows it a full 360 degrees of
movement. A screen isn't exactly a drawing board, and if you think a mouse isn't
as clunky as a pen, try using it to write your name. For those who have never
really liked breaking away from working with images on paper, this may be just
what they need.

And the ranking within the list will also be impacted - for example, Amazing
Fantasy #15 only shows up in the #18 spot because the list is sorted solely by
the number of copies submitted to CGC. Any books with a very restricted print
run will naturally sort themselves off of the bottom of a list like this as
well. And another flaw is that some very-high-value comics simply didn’t have
many copies printed. Of course, there are some limitations and flaws to this
approach to keep in mind before reviewing the list: for one thing, this
submission data is from one snapshot in time (January 19, 2021) and there could
be plenty of important 1960’s comic books that aren’t recognized as such until
some future development gives them renewed attention. So by ranking comic books
simply by the number of copies submitted to CGC - removing any judgment call or
sales price information - I’d argue we can get to a pretty darn good list of
important comic books from the 1960’s! The thinking here is that the more
important the comic book as a key 1960’s issue, the more likely its owner will
want to have it professionally graded and slabbed. Here’s what you’re about to
see: what follows is a different approach to “tease out” a list of 1960’s comic
book key issues to consider collecting, by asking the following question: for
each comic book issue of the 1960’s that has passed through CGC’s doors to date,
how many copies have been graded?

Personally, the only two types of lists of key silver age comic books by year
that I’ve ever seen are either: (1) personalized lists based upon judgement
calls of what is most important to the particular writer, and (2) lists based
upon high sales price data (which can often be influenced by the grade of what
was sold). Here’s how this list of important 1960’s comic books you’re about to
see will differ from ones you’ve seen before. When contemplating putting up this
page, I thought to myself, “how can I possibly add anything to what is already
known about the silver age?” Minimum values are what you can expect to receive
for a poor to average, but complete copy.The Silver Age of comics: many a
collector’s favorite time period, and also one of the most extensively studied…
with the list of “key” issues pretty much widely known in the hobby, and most of
them occurring during the 1960’s. Your copy, if you own one, is usually not
