“Many people with disabilities don’t even know they have the same rights as
everyone else.” Why? Because stigma, stereotypes, and exclusion build
walls. Breaking these barriers means no longer being turned away from
schools because “there’s no staff for someone like you.” ➡️ It means having
access to work, healthcare, and basic rights without being treated like
you’re a burden. ➡️ It means being part of every aspect of society, without
limits. Our Office works to ensure people with disabilities can live with
dignity and access their rights on an equal basis with others. We advocate
for inclusive laws and policies that address systemic barriers, from
inaccessible schools to discrimination in the workplace. We support
capacity-building for governments and civil society to implement these
reforms. And we amplify the voices of people with disabilities, ensuring they
are part of the decisions that shape their lives. The fight is far from over,
but every step forward matters. Moldova is one example of how we’re working
globally to break down barriers and ensure disability rights are recognized

Gisèle Pelicot: Thank you for helping shame change sides, for showing that
shame was never yours, or rape survivors, to bear. Our Office stands with all
survivors of rape in their fight for justice. Rape is a violation of human
rights. Justice begins when we stop blaming women and start confronting the
real problem. Those who commit violence, those who enable it, and those who
stay silent in its face.

#USA: We welcome President Biden's decision to commute federal death
sentences of 37 individuals. The death penalty is inconsistent with the
fundamental right to life and we urge all States that have not done so to put
in place a moratorium on its use.

Sometimes when you work for the United Nations, you pay the ultimate price.
My colleague Laura Dolci was feeding her baby son when she heard the
devastating news that her husband Jean-Sélim Kanaan had been killed in a
suicide bomb attack on the UN Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. It was August
19, 2003: 22 of our colleagues lost their lives that day. Just days before,
she recalled, “he kissed us goodbye, and I remember telling him in my joking
way: ‘Be sure you come back.’” Working through tremendous trauma, Laura
became a fierce advocate for terrorism victims – calling for recognition and
support for those affected by what she calls a senseless crime. At the United
Nations, she is now a distinguished leader in international human rights. On
our UN podcast Awake At Night, she reflects on the meaning of the term
resilience, on her late husband’s legacy, and on her hopes for their son.

Recognition. Development. Justice. For ten years, these pillars guided global
efforts to address the systemic racism and discrimination faced by people of
African descent. Now, with the start of a second International Decade for
People of African Descent, the UN is continuing to tackle the persistent
injustices rooted in enslavement, colonialism, and structural racism. The
challenges remain stark. Limited opportunities. Deep inequality. Systemic
denial of basic rights. This Decade is a chance to focus global attention,
demand accountability, and drive real progress toward a world where people of
African descent are not just recognized but empowered to thrive.

Neighbors calling for help. Grandparents offering childcare. Volunteers
opening their homes. Ordinary people saving lives. Yet, for this, they are
punished: fined, arrested, and even jailed for acts of #solidarity.
Meanwhile, migrants and refugees—parents clutching their children, people
fleeing desperation— face horrors alone, attacked and abandoned on dangerous
journeys. Crimes against them go unanswered—impunity fuels more violence and
suffering. We must protect the act of helping, of standing up for someone’s
rights. Criminalizing them and those defending their rights betrays our
shared humanity. This comic shines a light on the power of solidarity and
