The Iron Man has built himself an eco-friendly dome-shaped house in Malibu, and
it exudes futurism.

Over the past few years, Robert Downey Jr. has become Hollywood’s biggest name.
Tony Stark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has amassed a fortune of $ 300
million. Much like his larger-than-life character, RDJ is known for his lavish
lifestyle and multi-million dollar investments. As a co-founder of Footprint
Coalition with his wife Susan Downey, he became a venture capitalist to provide
grants for sustainable technology. This venture capital firm was inspired by the
7-acre family property he purchased in 2009 for $ 13.4 million in Malibu,
California. The land was stacked with solar water supply systems and wind
turbines.



It took several years to bring the land to life with an eco-friendly domed house
that featured futuristic architecture like never seen before. The “Binishell”
took a lot of planning and is considered a sublime architectural experience.
Without straight lines or rectangular rooms, the house is as retro as it is
modern. Here’s a look at how unique Robert Downey Jr.’s unique mansion really
is.


AN EXPERIMENTAL HOME

Robert and Susan were planning to buy a beachfront home in Malibu; however, they
were wowed by the 7-acre estate which already featured a retro 1970s house.
Italian architect Nicolò Bini created the shape of the dome using
concrete-covered inflatables for the house and a utopian design from the 20th
century for the interior.



The unconventional structure resembles a turtle shell from the aerial view. The
free-form structure was referenced from the geodesic domes, uterine chambers,
and shelters used in the hippie culture of the 1960s and 1970s. The house
features a radical design with a touch of retro.

A passionate seven-year project, the construction was supported by Mike
Grosswendt of All Coast Construction, who completed the exterior of the hull and
helped gain approval from the Coastal and Municipal Commission. While the couple
may have sprawling net worth, the project was done on a budget with a focus on
the greenest and cheapest solutions.




DRAMATIC STYLE AND DESIGN

Together with Mike Grosswendt, the interior was finished by architect Ben
Goodman of Goodman Architecture and interior designer Joe Nahem of Fox-Nahem
Design, who also designed the Hampton Windmill home of Robert Downey Jr.

The entrance has pale blue doors and portholes. In addition, there are several
skylights and unstructured windows. The dining table is fitted with a pearl
front which is the main attraction of the kitchen. The beads are personalized by
a Mexican artist and made of fiberglass.

Besides the kitchen, the area has two bedrooms with separate terraces. The
bedrooms have eclectic lighting that casts geometric shadows into each space for
a unique look. The bedrooms are designed in calming shades of pale blue and
blush, respectively.



The one-story house is original in every way, as each dome is a different size.
While the house is on one level, the domed house has several rooms below,
including Susan Downey’s main workspace. The walls of the office are made from
recycled structures, and the room features a mid-century interior with a
teardrop-shaped window.

The home entertainment area is designed with a folding garage door so that the
room can become a separate projection room or an extended living room. The
couple added a hanging nest designed by South African artist Porky Hefer called
“Human Nest” made of leather and braided rope for the children’s playroom.




A FUTURISTIC BUBBLE

Outside, the dome-shaped guest house has several facilities for relaxing with
the family. The property has a large swimming pool and sun loungers on the deck.
In addition to a tennis and basketball court, there is ample space to store the
huge collection of cars owned by Robert Downey Jr. which ranges from a $ 75,000
Audi eTron GT concept to cars. restored from the 1960s.

The courtyard includes a dystopian fountain which is a perforated oil barrel
with a Mickey Mouse perched on top, wearing a gas mask. Los Angeles-based artist
Bill Barminski created the fountain. It is considered a tribute to Walt Disney’s
contribution during the Cold War. Another sculpture that adorns the space is a
multicolored metal structure of dancing figures by the late artist Keith Haring
valued at $ 300,000.



The other prominent feature of the Downey Mansion is the petting zoo located not
far from the Dom House. Several farm animals are housed on the estate. The
couple first bought a pair of dwarf goats in 2010, which four alpacas followed.
Currently the farm has several Galloway cows and Kunekune pigs, 26 chickens and
2 lionhead rabbits.

To integrate sustainable energy into their homes and have a positive impact on
the environment, the Downeys have taken important steps to contribute to these
factors. Under lush trees and drought-tolerant shrubs and grasses, this humble
abode is the future of eco-friendly homes and architecture.
