IS BECOMING AN ACCREDITED INVESTOR WORTH IT? TEETERING ON NET WORTH CRITERIA.
WONDERING IF THE RETURNS ARE WORTH THAN DUMPING MY MONEY IN VOO LIKE I DID FOR
THE PAST 5 YEARS.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO BECOME AN ACCREDITED INVESTOR ASIDE FROM HAVING
THE MINIMUM INCOME/ASSETS. WHEN YOU GET AN EQUITY SUBSCRIPTION AGREEMENT THAT
REQUIRES YOU TO BE AN ACCREDITED INVESTOR, YOU JUST HAVE TO SIGN THAT YOU ARE
ONE.

AS SOMEONE WITH A BACKGROUND IN VENTURE CAPITAL, I’LL PITCH IN HERE.

ACCREDITED INVESTORS ARE JUST THOSE WITH HIGH ENOUGH NET WORTH OR HIGH INCOME
THE PAST TWO YEARS THAT QUALIFY FOR RISKIER ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS. THE
GOVERNMENTS THEORY IS THAT THE INVESTOR MUST BE RICH BECAUSE THEY ARE
SOPHISTICATED. THUS, THEY ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE SCAMMED.

SHOULD YOU DIVERSIFY? SURE, IF YOU WANT. VC, ANGEL INVESTMENTS, PE, HEDGE FUNDS,
ETC. ARE FINE IF YOU HAVE A NET WORTH IN THE TENS OF MILLIONS. OTHERWISE, YOU
REALLY DON’T NEED THAT TYPE OF DIVERSITY. ETFS AND PUBLIC EQUITY PROVIDE PLENTY
OF DIVERSIFICATION ALREADY.

JUST DON’T LIE ABOUT IT IF YOU SIGN DOCS SAYING YOU’RE A QUALIFIED INVESTOR. YOU
MAY BE RESPONSIBLE AND HELD LIABLE.

PERSONALLY, I THINK IT’S GREAT FOR ANGEL INVESTING. CONSIDER PUTTING ASIDE A
SPARE $5-25K A YEAR AND TARGET EARLY STAGE STARTUPS IN YOUR
SPECIALTY/INDUSTRY/SECTOR. MAKE A FEW INVESTMENTS EACH YEAR. IF YOU’RE GOOD
ENOUGH, YOU MIGHT STRIKE IT BIG IN 10+ YEARS FROM NOW. OTHERWISE, STICK TO
WHAT’S PROVEN.

VC, PE, AND HEDGE FUNDS ARE FOR THE UBER RICH (NET WORTH OF 100M+). RETURNS
STILL AREN’T ALL THAT GREAT ANYWAY. JUST A DIFFERENT STRATEGY THAT’S MORE
SOPHISTICATED.

1. AS OTHERS SAY, IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU STRIVE FOR. IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH NET
WORTH, YOU’RE IN. THAT’S IT. YOU DON’T GET A LETTER OR ANYTHING.
2. MANY MORE INVESTMENTS OPEN UP AT THE QUALIFIED PURCHASER DESIGNATION, NOT AI.
AI GETS YOU SOME REAL ESTATE FUNDS FOR THE MOST PART. PE, VC, ETC IS FOR QPS
ONLY

IT GIVES ACCESS TO ALTERNATIVE INVESTMENTS WHICH MAY NOT RETURN MORE THAN VOO
BUT WHICH COULD PROVIDE DIVERSIFICATION. I LOOKED AT IT AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO
BALANCING MY PORTFOLIO WITH BONDS. I’M IN A BUNCH OF PRIVATE REAL ESTATE FUNDS
INCLUDING FUNDS THAT ARE TAX ADVANTAGED IN QUALIFIED OPPORTUNITY ZONES. I
HAVEN’T BEEN IN LONG ENOUGH TO SEE EXIT EVENTS SO I’M NOT SURE WHAT THE ULTIMATE
RETURN WILL BE. I’M ALSO IN SOME PRIVATE DEBT FUNDS WHICH ARE RETURNING A LOT
MORE THAN BONDS RETURNS WITH HIGHER RISK THAN BONDS BUT LOWER VOLATILITY THAN
EQUITIES.

I WOULD PURSUE IT. IMO YOU AREN’T DOING THIS TO BEAT OUT VOO, YOU’RE DOING THIS
TO GET ACCESS TO ADDITIONAL HEDGE FUNDS. IF YOU’RE JUST LOOKING TO BEAT OUT VOO
THEN PROBABLY NO

If you don’t know then definitely stick.
Unless you are putting in big hours to actually be a professional investor
you’ll be worse off pretending.

It’s a legal benchmark of sorts that allows one to qualify for high-risk
investment strategies. Think along the lines of venture capital, angel
investing, certain hedge funds, etc.

I’ve done two deals that were private that required you to be an accredited
investor. One was mezzanine financing on a condo conversion. Went well. Total
annual roe was around 30%. Second one was an equity investment. Lost my whole
investment. I would not do equity again. You need to invest in a number of deals
for one to hit. If you only Invest in a small number of deals, you need to get
real lucky. I would consider another debt deal.

Hedge Funds are yet to “beat” the SnP. I’ve had them for 25 years.

Unless you are in the Renaissance Tech or Cohen’s closed-ended funds, you will
be unhappy. None of these funds are open for new investors.

Just curious, as an A&A, how much money do you actually save / invest vs. spend?
I find it difficult to save up tbh. Does it get easier once you move up or your
spending just catches up with your pay

I have a 25K loan from my MBA. I paid off 100k whole, after graduation. 3 years
ago, I moved my loan from federal to private ( SOFI) account. I recently lost my
job. I have applied for unemployment, as the severance that I received will only
cover for 2 months. Together my husband and I used to make less than 250k after
tax. Now, with a loss of pay , we are going to make less. Do you think I will be
eligible for Loan forgiveness?

is bearable.Checking on Zillow and the cost of the house might go around 700k.
Is this a good idea? Any other towns that I should explore.

I plan to buy a house next year but keep my current one.
Can the potential rent from my current home be used to qualify for a mortgage
for the next house?

How much money do you keep in your emergency fund? I’m debating between $36,000
- $72,000. I live in a low cost-of-living city, our monthly mortgage plus
insurance and taxes is roughly $1,500, and we try to keep our food expenses to
under $1,000 a month. No law school loans to pay off.

23yrs old and kids aren’t in the cards for at least a decade. Besides the
obvious about whether they happen or they attend college — any reason to not
start a 529 now in my name and max the contribution so I can change the
beneficiary to my kids for their college ~30 years down the road?

Currently maxing my IRA, 401(k), and mega backdoor 401(k). Feels like another
tax-advantaged vehicle I should optimize my returns and future for.

Hey folks, in need of help after doing online research. Joined a new firm ($107k
salary). I currently maxed my $6k in Roth IRA. Figuring out HSA. And contributed
up to employer match in 401k. My employer gives options of traditional and Roth
401k. I also have personal brokerage. Where should my money go next? Should I
put more into 401k or try to do mega backdoor into Roth IRA? A bit confused on
this. Thanks!

Odds federal debt forbearance is extended beyond September? I’d be down to about

European on a visa here. Looking forward to stay in the US for about 2-5 years
(not sure, hence the next Q). What should I invest in? Because of the US laws, I
can't keep any investments in my home country because I'd have to pay double
taxes. But I fear that if I invest here and catch a recession I will only lose
in the mid term, and can't play the long term because once I leave the country
I'll have to close my positions. Advice?
