THE RED HEN PROJECT

The Red Hen Project is a small local charity working with five primary schools
in North Cambridge. We support children and their families to overcome barriers
to learning, and provide a link between home and school. Our Red Hen family
workers work one-to-one with children and families in their home, at school, and
in the community. The Red Hen Project also run a range of outreach group
activities; parenting courses, coffee morning, drops-ins, workshops, family
activities, trips, and volunteer opportunities.

The Red Hen Project was registered as a charity with the Charities Commission in
1998; Registered Charity No: 1072190. In 2019 we became a Charitable
Incorporated Organisation (CIO).  We are currently part-funded by The Big
Lottery, Reaching Communities fund.

JULIE’S STORY

Julie has 6 children, 2 of them are at primary school and one pre-school age.
Both Julie and her husband had difficult childhoods and have struggled with
managing a large family. When the family were first referred to the project
Julie was struggling with her mental health and said “I was a hermit, never went
anywhere or mixed with anybody. I was lonely and isolated and this made it hard
for the children because they were cut off from everybody too”.

Julie speaks really positively about her relationship with the Red Hen
Project; “They always listen to my issues and concerns, they gave me really good
advice to help with sleep routines and managing the children. The biggest
support they gave me was encouraging me to go to groups and meet new people.”
