It can take 21 days for PrEP to reach maximum levels in the blood and vaginal
tissue. You receive maximum protection from HIV during receptive vaginal sex and
injection drug use after 21 days.

There is not enough information regarding how long it takes PrEP to reach
maximum effectiveness for insertive anal or vaginal sex.  


IS PREP EFFECTIVE?

Taking PrEP daily offers a 99% risk reduction in getting HIV from anal or
vaginal sex. It also reduces the risk of getting HIV from injection drug use by
around 70%. Clinical trials have shown that PrEP is effective for preventing HIV
infection. PrEP treatment is available for anyone who may be at risk of getting
HIV. This medicine does not interfere with hormone replacement therapy and can
be used in trans people taking hormones.
