An artist's concept of the completed design of NASA’s VIPER

Date:
Oct. 13 2021

An artist's concept of the completed design of NASA’s Volatiles Investigating
Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER). The robotic explorer will get a close-up view
of the location and concentration of ice and other resources at the Moon's South
Pole, bringing us a significant step closer to NASA’s ultimate goal of a
long-term presence on the Moon – making it possible to eventually explore Mars
and beyond. Credits: NASA/Daniel Rutter This image illustrated the NASA Ames

BioSentinel BioSensor Payload Assembly

Date:
Nov. 23 2020

BioSentinel BioSensor payload assembly in the BioSentinel Lab, N213 room 104.
Michael Padgen connects the thermal and optic units to microfluidics cards
containing yeast cells inside a fume hood. Image used in News Release April 2,
2021 "NASA's BioSentinel Team Prepares CubeSat for Deep Space Flight" Author:
Gianine Figliozzi, Public Affairs Specialist, NASA’s Ames Research Center.
Caption reads: BioSentinel will test new technology with the BioSensor payload,
a kind of “living radiation detector.” At the heart of the BioSensor are the
microfluidic cards that house yeast cells. As the cells get activated in space,
they will sense and respond to the damage caused by space radiation. Here, a
BioSentinel team member works on assembling a BioSensor payload, connecting
thermal and optical units to a microfluidic card. During BioSentinel’s
experiments, these components will warm the cards – and the yeast cells they
house – and measure growth and activity in response to space radiation damage.

BioSentinel Science Demo

Lauren Liddell viewing yeast, similar to those used in the BioSentinel science
payload, under a microscope in the lab. Image used in News Release April 2, 2021
"NASA's BioSentinel Team Prepares CubeSat for Deep Space Flight" Author: Gianine
Figliozzi, Public Affairs Specialist, NASA’s Ames Research Center. Caption
reads; BioSentinel scientist Lauren Liddell uses a microscope to count yeast
cells to ensure the correct number of cells are loaded into BioSentinel’s
microfluidic hardware. Because human cells and yeast cells have many similar
biological mechanisms, including for DNA damage and repair, BioSentinel’s
experiments can help us better understand the radiation risks for long-duration
deep space human exploration.

Mars Science Laboratory Parachute Test in the Ames 80-by-120-foot Wind...

Date:
Mar. 08 2009

Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) parachute test in the NASA Ames 80-by-120-foot
Subsonic Wind Tunnel at Moffett Field, Calif. (TR #22 - Phase 6) is the largest
ever built to fly on an extraterrestrial mission. This image shows a duplicate
qualification-test parachute inflated in an 80-mile-per-hour
(36-meter-per-second) wind inside the test facility. It has 80 suspension lines,
measures more that 50 meters (165 feet) in length and opens to a diameter of
nearly 16 meters (51 feet). Most the orange and white fabric is nylon, though a
small disk of heavier polyester is used near the vent in the apex of the canopy
due to the higher stresses there. It is designed to survive deployment at Mach
2.2 in the Martian atmosphere, where it will generate up to 65,000 pounds of
drag force.

Spaceward Bound event in the Mojave Desertt

Date:
Mar. 27 2007

Dr Chris McKay and Monika Kress, Professor of Astronomy at San Jose State
University peer down into a cave where they will study the extreme environment
as part of the Spaceward Bound event in the Mojave Desert, CA (an outreach
exercise) and an accompanying (learning for the classroom) team of teachers will
be studying side-by-side with NASA scientists who search for life in extreme
environments, closely approximating what they expect to find on other planets.
Why the Mojave -- an inhospitable, sun-drenched spot in the California Desert?
This natural setting presents scientists with opportunities to study
environments that are analogous to what explorers will find on the Moon and
Mars. Teachers and scientists will perform scientific fieldwork in lunar
geology, Mars astrobiology, Mars geology, and issues of temperature and solar
inundation and radiation.
