WELCOME TO BIG HORN COUNTY

Big Horn County, Wyoming is located in the northern part of Wyoming's Big Horn
basin.

Big Horn County was created from parcels taken from Johnson, Fremont, and
Sheridan counties, and was organized in 1897.

The principal industries in Big Horn County are gas and oil development,
bentonite mining, farming, ranching, and tourism.

The people in our communities still understand and exemplify the Old West
traditions of hard work, self sufficiency, and mutual support. Our farms are
second to none in sugar beet, grain, bean, and hay production.

Many sights of historical and natural interest are easily accessed and enjoyed
on a tour through Big Horn County. Our county offers many attractions, including
the Bighorn National Forest and Cloud Peak Wilderness, Pryor Mountain Wild Horse
Refuge, Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site, Greybull Museum, Red Gulch Dinosaur
Track Site, Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (also known as Yellowtail
Reservoir), Shell Falls, Paintrock, and the ancient Medicine Wheel. Outdoor
recreationists find a wealth of wild game, fish, and outdoor scenery in Big Horn
County.

WYOMING REGION 6 HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN - PUBLIC REVIEW DRAFT
WASHAKIE, HOT SPRINGS, PARK AND BIG HORN COUNTIES

This plan is the product of a 2021 planning process undertaken by the four
counties in the Big Horn Basin in Wyoming Region 6 – Big Horn, Park, Hot Springs
and Washakie. The purpose is to meet the requirements of the Disaster Mitigation
Act of 2000 (PL 106-390), and thereby maintain continued eligibility for certain
Hazard Mitigation – or disaster loss reduction – programs from the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This plan updates the 2016 Region 6 Hazard
Mitigation Plan including each county annex for Big Horn, Hot Springs, Washakie
and Park counties and sets priorities for mitigation in the Region for the time
period of 2022-2027.

BIG HORN COUNTY FAIR BOARD

Applications are requested from residents of Big Horn County who are interested
in serving on the Big Horn County Fair Board.  There are two 5 year terms to be
filled that expire December 31, 2024. Mail your application to the Big Horn
County Commissioners at P.O. Box 31, Basin, WY 82410, or email to
lori.smallwood@bighorncountywy.gov by 5:00 PM, December 6, 2024. Application
forms and the Fair Board By-Laws are available at the link below.

BIG HORN COUNTY PLANNING AND ZONING

Applications are requested from residents of Big Horn County who are interested
in serving on the Big Horn County Planning and Zoning Commission.  There are two
3 year terms and a one year unexpired term to be filled that expire December 31,
2024.  Mail your application to the Big Horn County Commissioners at P.O. Box
31, Basin, WY 82410, or email to lori.smallwood@bighorncountywy.gov by 5:00 PM,
December 6, 2024.  Application forms and Board Member Handbook are available at

BIG HORN COUNTY WEED AND PEST CONTROL DISTRICT

Public notice to solicit nominations for Directors of Big Horn County Weed and
Pest Control District.  Appointments to be made on the 7th day of January 2024,
time 1:00 p.m. 
Pursuant to the Wyoming Weed and Pest Control Act (W.S. 11-5-101 through
11-5-303), notice is hereby given to solicit nominations for appointments to the
Big Horn County Weed and Pest Control District.  Appointments shall be made in
accordance with W.S. 11-5-104.
Prior to appointment, the nominee for Director shall submit a petition signed by
at least ten (10) landowners, to the Big Horn County Weed and Pest office in
Greybull WY on or before December 30, 2024.
Directors are being sought for South Area 5, North Area 2, North At Large and
South At Large. A map of district areas can be found with petition forms on the
Big Horn County website. www.bighorncountywy.gov
Petition forms can be picked up from the Weed and Pest Office, Big Horn County
Clerk’s office or downloaded from the County website at www.bighorncountywy.gov

BIG HORN COUNTY AIRPORT BOARD

Applications are requested from residents of Big Horn County who are interested
in serving on the Big Horn County Airport Board.  The Board is expanding to 7
members.  There are a total of 4 seats to be appointed.  There are two new five
year terms to be filled that expire December 31, 2029 and two seats up for
reappointment that also expire December 31, 2029.  The two new seats will begin
serving immediately, the remaining two seats will begin or continue serving
January 1, 2025  Mail your application (Form below) to the Big Horn County
Commissioners at P.O. Box 31, Basin, WY 82410, or email to
lori.smallwood@bighorncountywy.gov by 5:00 PM, October 9, 2024.

BIG HORN COUNTY SOLID WASTE BOARD

Applications are requested from residents of the Big Horn County Solid Waste
District who are interested in serving on the Big Horn County Solid Waste
Board.  Applications are available at www.bighorncountywy.gov or at the County
Clerk’s office. There are two 3-year term seats available.  Mail your
application to the Big Horn County Commissioners at P.O. Box 31, Basin, WY
82410, or email to lori.smallwood@bighorncountywy.gov, all applications must be
received by 5:00 PM, October 11th, 2024.  

BYRON SOLID WASTE BOARD

Applications are requested from residents of the Byron Solid Waste District who
are interested in serving on the Byron Solid Waste Board.  Applications are
available at www.bighorncountywy.gov or at the County Clerk’s office. There is a
one 3-year term seat available.  Mail your application to the Big Horn County
Commissioners at P.O. Box 31, Basin, WY 82410 or email your application to
lori.smallwood@bighorncountywy.gov, all applications must be received by 5:00
PM, October 11th, 2024.
