Personal OneDrive desktop applications running on these operating systems will stop syncing to the cloud on March 1, 2022. After March 1st, 2022, your personal files will no longer sync and should be uploaded/accessed directly on OneDrive for web. If you are currently using one of these operating systems, we recommend upgrading your operating system to either Windows 10 or Windows 11 to avoid disruption. For machines that do not meet system requirements for Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system upgrade, you can back up and protect your files by manually uploading them to OneDrive on the web, and continue to access, edit, and share your files on all your devices. If you are using the OneDrive desktop application for business, starting January 1, 2022, support for this application will be aligned with the Windows support lifecycle. Note: Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are in extended support until January 10, 2023. Windows 8 reached end of support on January 12, 2016. As a fan of Windows 8.1 and long defender of its unique UX on the tablet and phone I have given up on Microsoft with the announcement of Windows 10. After all this is just software that runs no matter what. While Windows has a long history of staying back compatible (can still run Windows 1.0 calculator on Windows 10) this move shows that MS no longer cares about its non-business users that made it what it is today. I use OneDrive on my work laptop which has Windows 10, but also on my home PC with relatively recent hardware that runs Windows 7. I have had no issues with the OneDrive app, other than recently having to update registry settings to enable TLS 1.2. The app is responsive, fast and works very well. I need to continue using it also on my home PC. Downloaded the installer for 21.245 or 22.002, but get an error message after launching: "Unable to install OneDrive / A supported version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 is required to proceed."
