Dr Irfan Halim, 45, who had been working in Swindon, Wiltshire, passed away at a
London hospital last weekend after a nine-week battle with the virus. The
devoted husband and father spent his last moments in the arms of his wife, who

Covid cases in the UK continue to rise while hospital admissions fall and deaths
remain flat, as the epidemic becomes increasingly unpredictable. There were
46,807 positive tests in the last 24 hours, which is the highest number since
October 22 and a 10 per cent increase on last Thursday.

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said that, from February 1 next year, everyone
in Austria will need to be vaccinated or else face unspecified 'penalties' to
combat a new wave of Covid. Mr Schallenberg did not make clear exactly which age
groups will be included, though it is assumed the very young and those who
cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons will be exempt. It makes Austria the
first country in Europe to impose such a law, and comes after Austria's lockdown
on unvaccinated people earlier this week. That move has now been scrapped in
favour of a full lockdown on all people that will confine them to their homes
except for 'essential' activities, which will kick in on Monday.

UPDATED Question Time panellist Nazir Afzal today backed Fiona Bruce, saying he
had 'no criticism' of the host after accusing her during the show of asking him
first about the cricket racism row because he is a 'brown person'. The BBC
programme has become embroiled in an 'unconscious racism' row after Bruce asked
Mr Afzal, the only non-white member of the panel, to be the first person to
answer an audience member's query about racism. The question, which was partly
about recent allegations of racist abuse made by cricketer Azeem Rafiq, was
asked last night to a panel made up of former crown prosecutor Mr Afzal; white
psychologist Jordan Peterson; and three white MPs - Mims Davies from the
Conservatives, Stella Creasy of Labour and Stephen Flynn from the SNP. Bruce
then immediately turned to Mr Afzal and asked him to answer, prompting him to
say: 'The brown person will answer first'. As he made the comment he turned to
the audience and laughed, which saw some chuckle with him. The presenter then
asked him: 'Nazir, so do you think that was wrong of me to come to you first?'
Mr Afzal replied: 'I think so' and attempted to continue answering the question
while pointing towards the audience. But Bruce then added: 'Well let's not do
it. I'm not being sarcastic at all. I mean if that's how you feel, I respect
that.' Mr Afzal then stopped speaking and sat silently, while Bruce went to Mr
Peterson to hear from him instead. Reacting this morning after the incident
prompted huge debate online, Mr Afzal tweeted: ' I have no criticism of Fiona
Bruce. I made point that racism is something which everyone should have a view
on, not just minorities. If the subject was say child or domestic abuse, you
wouldn't just ask the victim. It's everybody's business.'

who was playing for Derbyshire, who they accused of not paying a dinner bill
because 'he is a Jew'. Rafiq, then 19, wrote on Facebook: 'Hahaha he is a Jew.
Probs go after my 2nds again.' He later added: 'How wrong is that? Only Jews do
that sort of s**t.' In an interview with the Jewish Chronicle , he said: 'The
circumstances do differ. I don't think I've ever played with anyone Jewish, so
it was not exactly the same. But I don't want to play it down. I've hurt people.
My genuine feeling is that I deserve the flak. I f***ed up.' But he told the
newspaper that his comments were not equivalent to the racist abuse he suffered,
pointing out that he had red wine forced into his mouth when his Muslim faith
prevented him from drinking booze. Fighting back tears he told MPs this week
(left) that racism had seeped into the England dressing room, where it was an
'open secret' that his abuser Gary Ballance used the word 'Kevin' as a
derogatory word for black and Asian players, an allegation Ballance has denied.
Rafiq added that England batsman Alex Hales allegedly named his dog Kevin
(right) because it was black. Hales strongly denied the claims Rafiq told the
JC: 'I'm deeply sorry. I don't recall making any other antisemitic remarks, but
I'll go back and think about it. People are going to go through my whole life
looking for things I've done. I admit I've made mistakes.'

party. 'The theme was musicians and Tupac (Shakur) is, was and always will be my

doubt caused. The cricketer, who was suspended by England for a second positive
drugs test in 2019 and fined for his involvement in a Bristol nightclub brawl
which saw Ben Stokes put in the dock in 2017, was slammed by MPs and anti-racism
campaigners. Julian Knight, chairman of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport
Committee which listened to Rafiq's emotional testimony about racism in cricket,

PLANES TRACKING THE SHIP IN THE MEDITERRANEAN DURING HUNT FOR CRASHED F35
STEALTH JET
The ship, which is off the coast of Egypt where Charles and Camilla are on tour,
is currently circling an area of the Mediterranean Sea as they try to find and
recover F-35B Lightning II plane from sea bed. The heir to the throne, who
yesterday visited the The Great Sphinx and pyramids of Giza with his wife
Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, had been due to helicopter on to the HMS Queen
Elizabeth today but the visit has now been stopped for 'operational reasons'. It
came as Defence Secretary Ben Wallace admitted that Russian aircraft have been
tracking the aircraft but would not be drawn on whether Moscow's submarines are
in the Med also looking for the wreckage. He said: 'It is not a secret the
Russians have been very interested in the carrier group both on the way out from
the United Kingdom - as she's sailed and her group towards the Pacific - and now
she is back in the Mediterranean. Of course the Russians are playing close
attention - it is what I'd expect'. Britain has called on the US to help find
and salvage a fighter jet that crashed into the Mediterranean after its pilot
ejected shortly after take off. Royal Navy servicemen are working with the
Americans to recover the F-35B from more than a mile below the surface.

The 40-year-old mother-of-two appeared on her close friend Ellen DeGeneres' talk
show today, when she took part in a prank that saw her approaching street
vendors in the lot where the series is filmed. During her exchanges with the
vendors, Meghan could only say and do whatever Ellen, 63, told her to through an
ear piece in what appears to be the Duchess' attempt to distance herself from
the royals' reserved image. Ellen made the Duchess hold a crystal to her head
and groan, nibble cookies and chips like a 'chipmunk', put on cat ears and sing
a song about kittens, and refer to herself as 'mommy' while sampling the
vendors' wares. The prank is one that Ellen has played with several of her past
celebrity guests, including Emma Watson, Adele, Kris Jenner, and Meghan's friend
Melissa McCarthy. Meghan also used the interview for political lobbying,
renewing her calls for mandatory paid leave for parents in the US, saying she '
will do everything I can to make sure that we can implement that for people'.
Her statements came shortly after it was reported that several senators had
voiced 'fury at Kristen Gillibrand for giving Meghan their private cellphone
numbers so she could lobby them' on the issue.

often enough that I don't blame anyone for seeking a better life. TV pictures
concentrate on the smattering of women and small children being helped off the
rafts (pictured). But nobody has ever adequately explained why 90 per cent of
those arriving here are young men of military age - like the headbanger who blew
himself up outside Liverpool Women's Hospital at the weekend. And about whom we
know precisely nothing.

HUGE TWO-HOUR FIRE DESTROYS WORKSHOP AT WORLD-FAMOUS PINEWOOD FILM STUDIOS
A commercial workshop at Pinewood Studios was destroyed in a huge fire last
night which saw large plumes of smoke rise above the world-famous site. The
massive blaze raged for more than two hours in the 245ft by 65ft single-storey
warehouse at the studios near the Buckinghamshire village of Iver Heath. The
fire, which the emergency services raced to at about 8.45pm and was finally
under control shortly after 11.20pm, also damaged part of an adjacent building.
Crews from eight fire stations tackled the blaze with 11 appliances including
four main jets, an aerial appliance, a turntable ladder and a thermal imaging
camera. Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service officials said an investigation
was today underway to determine the cause of the fire, which is currently
unknown. No one was harmed in the fire, and MailOnline has asked Pinewood to
confirm what equipment was in the building - which crews said was '100 per cent'
destroyed.

HIGH IN THE SWISS ALPS
Swiss photographer Olivier Staiger captured the movement of the stratus clouds
above the Valais valley in the Alps near the Swiss-Italian border, with Mont
Blanc and the Matterhorn in the distance. Staiger used a time-lapse setting on
his Canon camera which took an image every three seconds over the course of
several hours to create the footage. He filmed the low-lying stratus clouds
spreading across the valley below the Scex-Riond peak.

cigarette carton. It then pulled out a cigarette and held it in its beak as
though it was about to start smoking. The amused driver jokingly held up a
lighter for the bird in footage filmed on November 15 in north-eastern province
