Check out our #BMHW2022 calendar of events HERE We must #DeliverBirthJustice Learn more about the campaign THE FIGHT FOR RACIAL JUSTICE BEGINS WITH BIRTH JUSTICE Black mothers, babies and families deserve to be healthy, safe and supported throughout their birth journey and their lives. Yet, all too often, racism is harming Black families' ability to have safe and healthy pregnancies and births. In response to this crisis, five Bay Area counties — Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Francisco, and Solano — have joined forces to launch #DeliverBirthJustice. This campaign aims to mobilize all corners of the Bay Area — from health professionals to policy makers to community members — to end racism and birth justice for Black families. We don’t want to feel like > we are in the fight for our lives while accessing prenatal care. I experienced > being dropped from prenatal care at 20 weeks. I have a high risk pregnancy and > was told that due to COVID transitioning, the system is overwhelmed and thus I > would have to wait another month for regular prenatal care. If it weren’t for > my advocacy as a birth professional I would be forgotten.” > > Anisha Johnson Contra Costa County HEAR FROM DESIREE JOHNSON × > "We want to do everything for this baby. We brought this baby in to this world > for this baby to survive and live and be well." > > Desiree Johnson Contra Costa County HEAR FROM KE'IRA ROBERTSON × > "Being a Black, single mother in America requires a strong team for motivation > and guiding her young kings and queens towards success and a healthy future." > > Ke'Ira Robertson Solano County HEAR FROM ORLANA MEJIA × > "There's a reason why Black women are having more of a mortality rate. That's > not a coincidence, and that has to change." > > Orlana Mejia Santa Clara County HEAR FROM LACORA BENARD × > "Always voice your concerns. No matter how many times you have to say it, > always speak up for what you need when it comes to giving birth. Things are > getting better for us, but we're just viewed in a different way. People always > expect us to be strong, yet, as Black women, we are often ignored." > > LaCora Benard San Francisco County HEAR FROM SHANTE TAYLOR × > "Throughout my pregnancy, I experienced doctors trying to tell me what to do > with my body. I felt a lot of peer pressure and it made me feel like my > opinions didn't matter — no matter how much I voiced it, it was like somebody > already made the decision for me." > > Shante Taylor Santa Clara County HEAR FROM SHALES HOGAN × > "I see myself in two aspects: as strong, independent, loving, caring, a hard > worker. And then on the other aspect, I see myself as struggling, striving, > trying to climb to the top to make a better life for me and my child. " > > Shales Hogan San Francisco County HEAR FROM SHARAYAH ALEXANDER × > "The serious challenges that Black moms are facing in regards to health and > their community is because of racism. When we start listening to Black > mothers, and start realizing that we are human beings, and our voice matters > just as much as anyone else's, that's when we're going to start seeing health > issues decline. When people start listening to us, that's when we're going to > start seeing more beautiful births and more Black mothers and babies actually > surviving." > > Sharayah Alexander Alameda County HEAR FROM STEVONNA GORDON × > "Becoming a mother is world-shaking. Every mother should count. Do your part > to stand up or speak out for injustice for our Black and Brown mothers to save > not only our babies, but our Black Queens." > > Stevonna Gordon Solano County * Home * Take Action * About the Issue * About the Campaign * on Twitter * on Facebook * on Instagram * on LinkedIn #DeliverBirthJustice is a partnership with five Bay Area counties - click on logos below to learn more about them.
