The enormous bridge fades
into the green haze—a thick,
poisonous mist.

—What’s out there,
on the other end of the bridge?
—Some cities, I guess.
As empty as our Yaroslavl.


The Polkan Outpost is
the farthest away.
Before the breakup,
the place was the Yaroslavl Tire Plant.

The Outpost’s current inhabitants
don’t like going to town.
Except maybe
on the Parent Commemoration Day,
when they go there as to a cemetery.

Why not take a little trip there? I might get lucky.
How about finding a cell phone?
I’d take it to her. 

A gutted cafe,
a gutted pancake house,
The sun’s going down.
Time to go back. 



Over the years,
not a single living soul came from there.
Not until now.

You can barely make out
his features
for the dried mud and
wound lymph on his face.

— It’s pouring down! Gonna give me skin ulcers again.

what lies beyond this bridge.
