DAILY UNIVERSAL REGISTER

BRIEFING

Indonesia: Rishi Sunak will meet President Biden at the G20 summit in Bali.
UK: Sadiq Khan gives evidence to the London Assembly on Dame Cressida Dick.

ON THIS DAY

In 1801 the first edition of the New York Evening Post was published by
Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the US, with a circulation of 600; in
1959 Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical The Sound of Music opened on Broadway,
where it ran for more than 1,440 performances. It opened in the West End of
London in 1961; in 1945 the constitution of Unesco (United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization) was signed in London, and came into force
on November 4, 1946.

NATURE NOTES

The hills are alive with the sound of bellowing fallow deer. Raging with ramped
testosterone levels and reeking of their own urine (in which they roll
lavishly), fallow bucks are fighting and mating in their annual autumnal rut.
Their bellowing groans sound strangely like roaring lions. It’s thought that
Britain’s native fallow deer were displaced by the last ice age and that the
species only returned in the 11th century when the Norman Barons reintroduced
them from the Eastern Mediterranean. These deer soon spread into the forests
where they became a sore temptation for the hungry peasantry. A law of 1198
introduced castration and blinding as a punishment for poaching deer.
