AUBURN, ALABAMA BOTH MAKE TOP 6 FOR UNCOMMITTED CARVER-MONTGOMERY DUO

The top two uncommitted senior football prospects in the state both cut their
potential colleges to six on Friday.

The same six.

The dominant Carver-Montgomery defensive duo of James Smith and Qua Russaw
posted on social media that there top six schools are: Florida, Ohio State,
Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and nearby Alabama State.

It wasn’t a coincidence. The pair knew their targets matched. Together, the
reunited duo should wreck defenses in Class 6A under first-year head coach
Marcus Gardner. The plan is to feature them everywhere along the defensive line,
with Russaw getting reps at linebacker. Gardner even hinted at an offensive
package featuring both blue-chip targets.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound Smith, a defensive lineman, is No. 1 on the 247
composite rankings for the top seniors in the state. Russaw, a 6-foot-2,
230-pound EDGE, is No. 5.

Smith briefly transferred to IMG Academy last year before returning to
Montgomery. He and Russaw expect their decisions to come near the start of the
early signing period on Dec. 21.

Russaw finished the season with 130 tackles, 27.5 tackles for a loss and 16
sacks. He was a finalist for Class 6A Lineman of the Year. He feels like he has
a connection with two Auburn recruiters: Zac Etheridge and Roc Bellantoni.
Etheridge “basically came from the same background” as Russaw as both are
originally from Troy. That bond should give the Tigers a shot at landing one of
the nation’s best. But the Crimson Tide have established a connection as well.

“What really stands out (about Alabama) is all the players they put in the
league. Coach Nick Saban, coach (Charles) Kelly and coach Pete (Golding) are
really experienced. So is Coleman Hutzler, their new edge coach,” Russaw said
about the Crimson Tide.

Carver opens the season against Pine Forest, Fla., on Aug. 19.
