WHAT IF YOUR BALLET TEACHER COULDN'T DANCE?

Sven Strunk

What if your English teacher couldn't speak English?

What if your guide through the jungle had never been in the jungle himself?

What if your violin teacher couldn't play the violin?

Would you engage the English teacher who doesn't speak English himself if he
told you:

> Trust me, I can do it. I studied the most eloquent English speakers on the
> face of the earth! I know which traits make a good English speaker.

The word "master class" has still its original meaning in the field of classical
music. In a violin masterclass an outstanding virtuoso in his field teaches
concert solo violinists how to become even better.

Shouldn't this also apply to Leadership Coaching?

MASTERING

LEADERSHIP

Of course, there are many fields of leadership. You can be a leader in the
scouts. You can be a leader in the fire brigade. You can be a leader in the
army.

The easiest way to judge a leader's leadership in the business world is to look
at sales and profit performance over several years.

This is why I show my performance record in the next picture. "My time" as a CEO
started in year 0.

CAN YOU LEARN LEADERSHIP?

Sven Strunk

Some people say "leaders are born - not made". Others say you can learn it. In
order to find an answer we look at  the 4 steps of learning.

 1. Unconscious incompetence

 2. Conscious incompetence

 3. Conscious Competence

 4. Unconscious competence.

This process can be easily illustrated by the example of driving a car. As small
children we were in the first stage. We were not aware that we could not drive a
car. When we got older, we became aware of our incompetence - we rode in other
people's cars, but we couldn't do it ourselves. Then we learned to drive in
driving school, received our license, and made our first laps around town, we
were driving in the state of conscious competence. We could drive a car, but we
still had to think about it a lot. After a few years, driving had become so
second nature to us that we were in a state of "unconscious competence." In this
state, we drive without constantly thinking about what we are doing and we can,
for example, talk to the passenger while driving or parking. Some people even
drive home and when you ask them what happened on the way, they cannot tell you.

Most leaders are in that state. When asked why and how they did someting, they
discover that their  skills are completely unconscious - they cannot explain
them to others. But they don't want to admit that and make up explanations when
interviewed by psychologists.

Psychologists observe leaders in action, interview them and construct a
conscious model of leadership. Unfortunately, this works sometimes in some
isolated cases. But most of the times it doesn't.

Psychologists who teach and coach leaders are like ballet teachers who never
danced.

LEADERSHIP COACHING IS

INNER PROCESS COACHING

This is why I invented Inner Process Coaching. It deals with the fact that some
of the leadership is conscious, some is pre-conscious and some is totally
unconscious. Sometimes the unconscious parts just misunderstand the conscious
parts. Then problems arise or unsurmountable obstacles get in your way. You can
easily overcome them. You just have to get rid of the misunderstandings.

The leadership type quiz is the first step in this direction. When you learn
about your leadership type you become consciously aware of something which was
there all the time - but preconscious.

I studied the unconscious long before I became CEO. As a CEO I applied my
knowledge about the unconscious - on the individual level and on the company
level.
