for: SERI IS CHAMPIONING ELECTRONICS SUSTAINABILITY AS IF THE WORLD DEPENDS ON IT…BECAUSE IT DOES IT’S TIME TO RETHINK ELECTRONICS BEYOND SIMPLY MANAGING THE WORLD’S E-WASTE PROBLEM, SUSTAINABILITY DEMANDS PREVENTING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE Electronics have become an integral part of nearly every aspect of life. They’ve changed how we work, learn, play, and connect. And since we own more electronics and are constantly upgrading at home and at work, we’re creating even more e-waste at breakneck speed. But the world simply hasn’t found a way to responsibly deal with the volume of waste that is being created. So it’s time to ReThink Electronics. Instead of thinking end-of-life, we need to think whole lifecycle. It’s time to question our relationships with our devices and why we do what we do. Why do we upgrade so often? Why do we replace instead of repair? How can we make sure that when we’re done with our devices, they find good second and even third lives? How do we protect data, reclaim valuable resources, and contain toxins? And how can we move beyond not doing harm and instead make sure we maximize the power of our electronics to do good? TO GET TO ELECTRONICS SUSTAINABILITY AND ZERO E-WASTE, IT’S GOING TO TAKE ALL OF US, RETHINKING AND COLLABORATING TOGETHER. JOIN THE MISSION Learn More About SERI and our mission THE JOURNEY TO ELECTRONICS SUSTAINABILITY INCLUDES ZERO E-WASTE AND BEYOND Understanding where we are today, how we got here, and where we have to go next are all critical parts of the journey to achieving electronics sustainability. Reaching zero e-waste is a critical milestone, but beyond just becoming net-neutral, our electronics can do a world of good by closing the digital divide and expanding economic inclusion for people all around the globe. Learn More About the Journey WE AREN’T JUST TALKING A GOOD GAME. WE’RE BACKING OUR WORDS UP WITH ACTION. Here are SERI’s Primary Areas of Focus BEST PRACTICES We believe that strong, clear guidelines are a critical part of a circular economy. SERI looks for opportunities to build collaborative, voluntary programs to guide best practices for our electronics and related devices. KNOWLEDGE SHARING SERI takes the position that the majority of people, businesses, and organizations around the world want to be responsible with their electronics but may not always know how. We work to remove knowledge barriers wherever they exist, helping the world make better decisions all along the electronics lifecycle. RECOGNIZING THE GOOD All too often, we hear of the negative outcomes that result from irresponsible decisions made regarding used electronics. But there are many examples all around the world of people, business, organizations, and governments that are doing their part toward electronics sustainability. We recognize this good work and celebrate those that are taking steps toward electronics sustainability. Beyond committing to sustainable and socially responsible choices with their own electronics, the Electronics Sustainability Alliance collaborates to accelerate the development of greater capacity for responsible reuse and recycling. * INTERNATIONAL E-WASTE MANAGEMENT NETWORK (IEMN) IEMN is a consortium of environmental officials committed to building global capacity for the environmentally sound management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). The IEMN collaborates through annual and regional meetings as well as webinars and networking opportunities. * R2 MENTORS Tapping into SERI’s growing global network of R2 Certified facilities, our R2 Mentors program leverages the knowledge and experience of facilities that want to take an even bigger active leadership role in electronics sustainability by: * Proliferating Best Practices * Serving as mentors for non-R2 Certified facilities * Lending support to startups in developing areas * Partnering in an international exchange of ideas * Helping bridge the digital divide * Enabling capacity building globally * IMPACT INVESTING Financial and in-kind investments are used through SERI’s Programs on projects and initiatives that research solutions, educate people, and implement best practices to further sustainable practices with electronics around the world.
