Mark Mone found out he joined the “club” after he felt a pain in his side.

He said he’d had a “banner month” in his athletic ventures in August 2020, but
the pain in his side wouldn’t go away. Mone, the chancellor of the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee, went to the emergency room for care and learned he had
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He later learned he also had thyroid cancer.

No one wants to join that club, Mone said, but his predecessor soon after did.
Mike Lovell, president of Marquette University, was diagnosed with sarcoma in
August 2021.

Mone and Lovell shared their experiences this month at a Milwaukee Business
Journal event called Inspired Conversations. The event took place March 13 at
the Jan Serr Studio, part of UW-Milwaukee’s Peck School of the Arts.

Excerpts of their conversation, moderated by editor-in-chief Mark Kass, follow.
Responses were edited for length and clarity.

Q: What did you think about working after your diagnosis?

Mone: “I didn't really know at the beginning. It wasn't until an oncologist
said, ‘Are you going to continue working or are you going to take a leave or are
you going to retire?’ You know, those are the types of things that an oncologist
asked that I hadn't really thought of, because I was going to pursue that.

“My answer just right away was ‘I'm going to drive through. I'm just going to
work through this, if I can.’ I mean, that's what I was thinking at that point,
because I didn't know. Work is something that actually was a very helpful
distraction in many ways.”

Lovell: “When I met with my oncologist, knowing that I was going to be stepping
into six months of chemo, he told me that he believed that I would probably be
able to still do most of the things I was doing like, working and exercising. I
remember talking with my board chair and just saying, ‘Listen, I'd like to just
see how this goes and try to keep working.’ …

“There were days that I was tired and came home from work and laid down on the
couch and had to rest. But I feel blessed that through the whole thing, I was
able to keep a fairly normal lifestyle.”

Q: You have known each other a long time, and Mark was one of the first people
you talked to. What was the message, and why was that important?

Lovell: “He immediately put a care package together of all the things that
helped him get through … whether it be things like blankets, different lotions,
just a whole healthcare package of foods and things that really helped him get
through. But it wasn't the care package. It was the friendship and having
somebody to talk to about this, having somebody who you're close to who has gone
through this before, helped me deal with the emotions I was going to feel, what
to expect, all those types of things."
