A partner of shoestring fries doesn’t hurt. I was hoping to taste mustard in the
half brick chicken, but it was juicy and perfectly cooked, enhanced by fennel
fondant and herb garlic butter. Bucatini in cream sauce with Parmigiano cheese,
clams, prawns, pea shoots and a decadent touch of truffle-infused caviar made me
even happier, given its of-the-sea umami brightness, partnered with nicely al
dente noodles. It’s less Italy-perfect risotto, more farm-to-table, earthy
goodness. Vegetarians (and risotto lovers like me) will take to roasted
butternut squash risotto contrasted with chimichurri, maitake steak mushrooms
and pickled bok choy. Parker House rolls may have (over) trended the past
decade, but these are yet more fluffy additions to the frey, lush with bone
marrow fat butter, honey and nori salt. Local, farm ethos runs through the menu
at TCP, certainly standard for Bay Area, leading farm-to-table since the 1960s.

research and understanding of a menu, I try as many dishes as possible). It can
be hard to justify feasting (especially with drink) on a drive to and from SF
unless we’re staying north, so husband Dan and I squeezed in a reservation on a
cool March night on a recent jaunt north to try their reasonably priced $95
tasting menu. The team’s diverse backgrounds brought international influence to
a menu with decidedly local roots. Like many, at first, TCP was a pop-up,
launched temporarily in the Wishbone space in 2020, serving mostly takeout
upscale comfort food. Stéphane partnered with Petaluma native Steven Vargas (who
worked for/with Stéphane at Della Fattoria and The Shuckery locally) and wife
Marta, who grew up in Gdańsk, Poland (read more about all three here). Chef
Stéphane Saint Louis hails from Haiti and New York, having cooked and/or taught
(his alma mater being none other than Paul Bocuse Institute in France)
everywhere from Shanghai to France, Miami to Copenhagen. Making this Lilliputian
restaurant more intriguing, the husband/wife chef owners are from Haiti, NYC and
Poland, partnering with a Petaluma native. Blink and you’ll miss the Petaluma
Boulevard storefront housing intimate, cozy, 10-table Table Culture Provisions
(TCP) opened in the former Chili Joe’s towards the end of 2021. The cliche goes
that good things come in small packages and this treat is downright tiny. Now I
present to you (arguably) Petaluma’s top tasting menu. Like many a Sonoma County
town, it’s a good place to eat, housing rarities like Swedish Turkish food (you
heard right) at Stockhome, all the more precious given the closure of the same
chef/owners beloved (and original) Plaj here in SF, which was our best
Scandinavian restaurant. In recent years, Petaluma openings have been coming
steadily (like Easy Rider, which I reviewed earlier this year), while the city’s
craft brewery and distilling scenes are thriving, thanks to destination-worthy
Griffo Distillery and breweries like HenHouse or pioneering Lagunitas.

This is ideal given the rich blossoming of a town that has long had a
movie-worthy historic main street, music venues and one of the county’s best
bakeries, Della Fattoria, since 1995 ( RIP Kathleen Weber). But that drive can
be 35–40 minutes or a lot more, depending on the infamous Petaluma traffic jam
due to the forever buildout of a third freeway lane on each side of the 101
through the town.Īs that endless project finally looks to be on its final
stretch, traffic is getting better. When was the last time you dined in
Petaluma? This bustling Sonoma town with rich farming history on the border
between Marin and Sonoma Counties is only roughly 32 miles from San Francisco.

the destruction of their assembly lines. Standard tactics for an UrbanMech lance
was to split up into its constituent parts and occupy various buildings in order
to snipe the enemy before falling back to the next defensive line. Thus the
'Mech was primarily used for fighting guerrillas and other light 'Mechs in an
urban environment, an arena where it also achieved some success fighting medium
and even heavy 'Mechs.

This was a severe disadvantage if the 'Mech attempted to fight in open country -
something for only the foolish or desperate - but offset by the fact that
fighting in the close confines of a Star League city left little room to
maneuver anyways and the UrbanMech's low profile made it difficult to target.
The tradeoff was that it could only mount the miserable Leenex 60 engine, making
the UrbanMech the slowest light 'Mech in existence with a cruising speed of 21.6
km/h and top speed of only 32.4 km/h. This was achieved by starting with a
cheap, easily produced chassis, giving it six tons of Durallex armor to rival
the protection found on many medium BattleMechs, and mounting a pair of Pitban
6000 jump jets for a jumping distance of 60 meters.

The UrbanMech was designed for just what its name suggests: urban combat and
defense, and may be classed as an ambusher.

Allah gave them the satisfaction that both the acts, cutting down some trees to

objection of the Jews and the hypocrites, or due to their own thinking, they had
been involved in the misgiving whether they were guilty of spreading disorder in
the earth. One may ask: This verse of the Quran could satisfy the Muslims, but
how could those who did not accept the Quran as divine word be satisfied at this
reply to their objection that both acts were permissible as they had Allah’s
permission for it? The answer is: This verse of the Quran was sent down to
satisfy only the Muslims it was not sent down to satisfy the disbelievers.
However, this is not permissible for the purpose of mere destruction and
pillage. But the majority of the jurists hold the view that for the sake of
important military operations it is permissible. Imam Auzai, Laith and Abu Thaur
hold this same opinion. It does not make it generally permissible that whenever
war necessitates, trees of the enemy be cut down and burnt. Some of the Muslim
jurists have overlooked this aspect of the matter and expressed the opinion that
the permissibility of cutting the trees of the Bani an-Nadir was confined only
to that particular event. Thus, Abdullah bin Masud has given this explanation in
the commentary of this verse: The Muslims had cut down only those trees of the
Bani an- Nadir that stood on the battlefield.

But the specific command in respect of the war exigencies is that if destruction
is necessary for military operations against the enemy, it is lawful. This was
precisely in accordance with the Quranic teaching, which condemns those who
spread chaos: When they get power they direct all their efforts towards
spreading corruption in the land, destroying harvests and killing people. In
this matter, the general instruction is the same which Abu Bakr Siddiq gave
while dispatching the Muslim army to Syria: Do not cut down fruit trees, do not
destroy crops, do not ravage the settlements. But spreading disorder in the
world is that an army under the fit of war hysteria should intrude into the
enemy territory and start destroying the crops, cattle, gardens, houses and
everything in its way without any reason. The legal injunction that is derived
from this verse is that the destruction caused for the sake of military
operations does not come under spreading disorder in the world. At this Allah
sent down the command: Whatever trees you cut down, or whatever you left
standing, your neither act was unlawful, but it had Allah’s permission. At this
the hypocrites of Al-Madinah and the Bani Quraizah, and the Bani an-Nadir
themselves raised a clamor, saying that, on the one hand, Muhammad (peace be
upon him) prohibited spreading disorder in the world, but, on the other hand,
fruit trees were being cut down by his command, which amounted to spreading
disorder in the world. The reference is to the fact that the Muslims cut down or
burnt many of the palm-trees that stood in the oases around the settlement of
the Bani an-Nadir in order to facilitate the siege, However, they left those
trees standing which did not obstruct the military operations.
