From the Editor

Ford is doubling down on its electric vehicle production operations as it looks
to ramp up production volumes. In Europe Chris White has been appointed to a new
role as Chief Engineer of battery manufacturing. In this role White will be
responsible for implementing the OEM’s global strategy for battery manufacturing
engineering and developing leading edge manufacturing processes, equipment and
methods. Ford’s European arm has also been investing heavily in upgrading its
Cologne plant, transforming it into the Cologne Electric Vehicle (EV) Center.

Across the pond, Ford has completed the retooling and expansion of its Rouge
Electric Vehicle Center. This will see capacity for production of the F-150
Lightning treble to 150,000 units per year. This will also see an increase in
the number of options and trim levels being made available.

Development of every part of electric powertrains continues at pace. The motors
are no exception as our interview with EVR motors reveals how new designs and
materials can deliver benefits to production and performance.

The Chinese vehicle market for electric vehicles continues to grow, with
domestic OEM’s gaining an increasing share. To help boost sales in the region VW
and Audi are strengthening their respective partnerships with Xpeng and SAIC to
expand EV production and development. This will see VW invest $700m in Xpeng and
partner on technology and platforms, while Audi will expand its partnership with
SAIC to produce vehicles on one of its platforms.
