LITERARY EDITORS: 10 LITERARY FICTION EDITORS FOR HIRE

January 8, 2025January 8, 2025 by 30 DayBooks

A literary editor is perfect for any author who writes about profound or complex
subject matter, but who may not know how to make it clear, cohesive, or
coordinated within certain literary conventions. Fortunately, these 10 literary
fiction editors have decades of collective experience to help you out! Without
further ado, let’s dive into some literary fiction editors who can (and will)
make your work into the best version of itself.

1. JESS CHANDLER

Having founded two independent publishing houses (Prototype Publishing and Test
Centre), Jess Chandler is more than qualified to turn your lit fic draft into a
published masterpiece. Based in London and holding an MA in English Literature
from UCL, Chandler has edited over 100 books, including works of poetry, essays,
and literary criticism. Her services range from developmental editing to copy
editing to proofreading, and one of her favorite elements of editorial work is
the sheer act of improvement — whether it’s helping a client flesh out a better
storyline or adjusting prose on a line-by-line level to make it really sing.
Check out Chandler’s full profile here.

2. RACHEL KING

Rachel King’s attention to detail has been described by clients as
“unsurpassed”; in other words, if you’re in the business of perfection, King is
the editor for you. Her past roles include Project Editor at Perseus Books Group
(now part of Hachette), as well as Managing Editor for Ruminate Magazine, a
quarterly lit fic publication. King has also edited some incredible titles, such
as books of poetry and fiction from Appalachia (a fascinating niche!), as well
as short stories, creative nonfiction, and even memoirs. For any author looking
to seriously enhance their work with a trusted professional, you can’t do better
than King. Check out King’s full profile here.

3. COLM FARREN

Colm Farren, an editor based in Dublin, has specialized in literary fiction and
short stories since 2013. His work with esteemed Irish authors, such as Donal
Ryan and Elske Rahill, exhibits his commitment to turning any given story into
something unforgettable. Farren provides both developmental and copy editing
services, but his thorough nature may lend itself especially well to the former;
Farren notes that he can assist with “character development, plot development,
structure, pacing,” and more — basically, whatever is needed to firm up your
story’s foundation. From there, Farren also offers copy editing and proofreading
(for American or British English) to ensure the final product is beautifully
polished. Check out Farren’s full profile here.

4. MEG STOREY

One of the most accomplished editors on this list, Meg Storey (a suitable name)
has spent 15 years in media and publishing — and has the chops to show for it.
Having started out at Tin House, some of Storey’s earliest collaborators were
genuine literary icons: Ursula Le Guin, Anthony Doerr, and Tayari Jones, to name
a few. From there, Storey moved into Tin House’s acquisitions and, later, into
freelance editing for a range of genres — but she’s always kept literary fiction
at heart. Today, she’s an editor at the top of her game who remains generously
open to new authors and projects; indeed, no matter what level of experience you
have, it’s worth seeing if you and Storey might be a good match. Check out
Storey’s full profile here.

5. JOSHUA GRABER

Another full-service literary editor, Joshua Graber has worked on both books and
journals as a developmental editor, copy editor, and all-around refiner of
prose. While he’s currently accepting book-length manuscripts only, he could be
invaluable to your project, regardless of what stage it’s at. For example, if
you’re just starting out, you might employ Graber to develop your storyline and
characters — what he calls the “beating heart” of a book (and for which he’s
garnered particular praise from clients). However, he also provides overall
editorial assessments, copy editing, and query letter review for authors looking
to traditionally publish; in summary, he really does do it all. Check out
Graber’s full profile here.

6. KATE KENNEDY

A Canadian editor with two decades’ experience, Kate Kennedy has edited in-house
for publishers like Nimbus Publishing and Gaspereau Press — and worked closely
on the latter’s best-known project, The Sentimentalists (which won a Giller
Prize in 2010). Kennedy prides herself on being able to pick up subtle issues
and inconsistencies in a text without losing sight of the big picture —
something to which Johanna Skibsrud, author of The Sentimentalists, attests. (“I
will always be grateful for the confidence with which she guided me toward an
ending that [was true] to my own vision and intentions,” Skibsrud said.) To be
sure, if you’re looking for a steady hand on the wheel of your own lit fic
project, Kate Kennedy is the editor for you. Check out Kennedy’s full profile
here.

7. ALICE YOUELL

Alice Youell is a literary fiction editor who relishes all the small joys of
editing (the whole “editorial lifecycle”, as she calls it). In addition to her
love for lit fic, Youell also boasts a stellar record as a former Commissioning
Editor at Doubleday and a warm and thoughtful collaborative style, with clients
praising the care she pours into every project. Like many editors on this list,
Youell can also provide just about any service an author could want:
developmental editing, copy editing, query letter review, and even book coaching
for authors who are unsure of their path. With multiple award-winning titles
under her belt, she’s ready to take your book from manuscript to publication.
Check out Youell’s full profile here.

8. JOHN GRISWOLD

Not only an experienced editor, but also a published author himself, John
Griswold is the founder of Crux — a dedicated series for memoir, essays, and
nature writing — as well as a former journal editor and writing professor. In
other words, he’s spent the past twenty years gaining every expert qualification
in writing and publishing, and now he’s putting all that knowledge to use as a
freelance editor. Griswold has a particular penchant for creative nonfiction and
essays — so anyone looking to make their name in memoir or autofiction could
find him an ideal collaborator. Check out Griswold’s full profile here.

9. KALEE LINEBERGER

Kalee Lineberger got into publishing as early as possible, and though she’s
still fairly young, she’s achieved quite a bit: serving as a copyeditor for
multiple publications, working for Gulfstream Communications as an editor, and
now hustling as a freelancer with a niche in literary fiction. Browse through
her titles and testimonials and you’ll see what excellent work she does —
Lineberger has edited prize-winning novels, “Best Of” list-makers, and roundly
acclaimed books like The Prettiest Star by Carter Sickels. She’s also devoted to
preserving every author’s voice throughout the editing process, and clients have
only great things to say about the results. Check out Lineberger’s full profile
here.

10. RAYA MORRISON

Last but certainly not least, Raya Morrison is a literary fiction editor who
contains multitudes — on top of lit fic, she also works on YA, fantasy, poetry,
and more (and was a web developer in another life!). Morrison has dabbled in
various publications over the years — including as an editor for pubs like Faze
magazine and Canadian pub Blood & Bourbon. She now takes on literary projects of
all stripes, signaling her openness to different projects, and her appetite for
challenge and excitement. Whether you’re a new or veteran author, whether your
book is more “classic” literary fiction or something with a bit of edge,
Morrison is bound to serve you well. Check out Morrison’s full profile here.

With that, we’ve reached the end of our 10 best literary fiction editors to
hire! We hope you’ve found someone who checks all your boxes — and that, with
any luck, your lit fic title will be hitting the shelves (literally or
virtually) with impressive imminence.
