WHAT IS BUSINESS BROADBAND

Business broadband is made up of two words - Business and Broadband.

Lets start with Broadband. Broadband is a way to connect to the internet. Once
connected it typically stays connected 24x7.  It allows all of your computers
and electronic devices that are enabled to transfer information via the internet
to connect.

There are several types of broadband from DSL, Cable, Fibre-optic and Satellite.

In order to use Broadband you would need to use a Broadband Service provider.
Each Service Provider may offer several packages which may differ for example by
speed of data being uploaded/downloaded, how accessible Customer Service is,
Whether you have to share that connection with others and how many others. 

Basically there are two types of plans - Residential and Business. This brings
us nicely to our second word - Business.

A Business will use their internet connectivity different to a home user and
will have more higher demands. A home or residential user may typically surf the
web, watch an online movie and may not be too impacted if the connections fails
for a time.  A Business will likely have multiple staff, applications and
information that may also need to be updated in real-time. Not doing so could
affect contracts and quotes going forward. So having a strong connection that is
available all the time is clearly important. However, as technology will
eventually fail so it is important for business to monitor these things to
ensure there is zero downtime.


WHO IS IT FOR?

All types of businesses could and do benefit from having Broadband internet.
Broadband is more useful for small and medium sized businesses.  Very large
corporate office building are more likely to have Leased Lines which are private
dedicated internet lines connecting different offices together.





DO WE NEED IT?

There is good reason as to why Internet Service Providers offer a business plan.
Firstly, these will be the more premium product from that supplier. With that
its usually the business plan that has all the bells and whistles. Pricing-wise
it will be more expensive but for the business you can be assured that your
business will be able to continue to work.  Here are some of the main points as
to why you should seriously think about using a Business plan as opposed to a
residential plan.

   Service Level Guarantee - One of the reasons to opt for a business plan is
   that a certain level of service is guaranteed to be provided to your
   business. If the service fails this then the supplier may be liable to
   compensate you. 
 * 
   Customer support - When an issue does arise a business would no doubt want to
   get a reply from support as soon as possible. With Business the customer
   response is typically same day as opposed to a couple of days. 
 * 
   Traffic prioritised -A business plan will often have a guaranteed level of
   service. As well as a minimum threshold businesses typically get  a priority
   on traffic so you shouldn't experience any slowness or downtime.
 * 
   Upgraded hardware - Business customers typically receive an upgraded router
   where users enjoy such things as stronger wi-fi signals, better security
   which would include things such as firewall, VPN server and content
   filters.

   Static IP address - Something not given on residential plans. Basically it
   means that each time one connects to the internet the IP address (a unique
   number formatted as nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn that identifies your computer) changes
   everything with a residential plan, yet the IP address on business remains
   the same. Benefits for this include that company applications know who they
   are talking to.
