FAQ ON THE METHODS OF PAYMENT


HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO PAY THE PENALTY?


The penalty for an offence committed in Italy must be paid within 60 days of the
day on which the information letter is received. If this deadline passes without
payment having been made, action will be taken to recover the amount owed, with
the addition of further charges as set out by Italian law.




PAYMENT OF THE FINE WITHIN 5 DAYS WITH 30% DISCOUNT.


When do the 5 days start and how are they calculated?
Bear in mind that you receive a 30% discount if you pay within 5 days of
receiving the information letter.
The normal rules apply when calculating the deadline: the first day is not
included, while the final day is included. Let’s look at an example: for a
penalty notice received on Saturday 20th December, the 20th is not included in
the calculation. The 5 days end on 25th December, which is a public holiday, as
is 26th December, so the last day to pay with the 30% discount is 27th December.




HOW CAN I PAY THE FINE?


By Credit Card
The online payment service, accessed with the credentials provided in the
information letter, allows you to pay administrative penalties (fines) relating
to road traffic offences by credit card by connecting to the web portal and
following the steps as indicated.
By Bank Transfer
Payment can also be made by bank transfer. The payer must indicate the case
number shown in the top right of the information letter in the payment
description.







FAQ ON HOW TO FILE AN APPEAL


HOW CAN I APPEAL?


You can submit an appeal to the Prefecture and to the local Justice of the Peace
(small claims court) that has jurisdiction over the matter.
To the Prefecture
Appeals to the Prefect must be written exclusively in Italian and sent by
registered post within 60 days of receiving the penalty notice. Appeals must
only be submitted if justified.If the Prefect considers that the appeal is not
justified, he/she will issue an order entailing the payment of a sum not less
than double the amount indicated in the penalty notice in addition to the
related expenses.
To the Justice of the Peace
Appeals to the Justice of the Peace must be written exclusively in Italian and
sent by registered post within 60 days of receiving the penalty notice.
Appealing to the Justice of the Peace involves paying a tax which varies
depending on the amount of the fine. Appeals must only be submitted if
justified. Upon receiving the appeal, the Justice of the Peace will set a date
for a hearing which the plaintiff or his/her legal representative is required to
attend.




WHAT ARE THE TIME LIMITS FOR LODGING AN APPEAL?


To the Prefect within 60 days of the challenge of the violation or the
notification of the fine.
To the Justice of Peace if resident in Italy within 30 days from the
contestation of the violation or the notification of the fine. If you reside
abroad within 60 days of being charged with the violation or service of the
fine.
