WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

Recommended Action
Instructions
Update your contact information.

When: Now (June)
Update contact info on StudentAid.gov.

Also update your contact info on your servicer’s website. Log in to find your
servicer.
Explore affordable repayment plans.

When: Before August
Compare repayment plans with Loan Simulator.

An income-driven repayment (IDR) plan may be a more affordable option because it
adjusts your payment amount based on your income and family size. For your
payment amount to be adjusted before your first bill, apply for an IDR plan as
soon as possible.

Apply for an IDR plan.
If on an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, consider recertifying early.

When: Before August
If you were on an IDR plan before the payment pause, you’ll have at least 6
months to recertify your income after the payment pause ends. Normally this has
to be done each year.

However, you may want to recertify for a lower payment if your income has gone
down or your family size has increased. For your payment amount to be adjusted
before your first bill, recertify as soon as possible.

Recertify your IDR plan.
Enroll (or reenroll) in autopay.

When: Before August
Autopay is optional, but if you choose autopay, you’ll save 0.25% on your
interest rate. On autopay, you'll get a reminder ahead of each withdrawal.

Sign up for autopay on your servicer's website. If you were enrolled in autopay
before the payment pause, you likely need to reenroll.

Log in to find your servicer.
Find out what your monthly payment amount will be.

When: August or September
Your monthly bill in September will contain your payment amount. You also may
receive a communication called a “disclosure” from your servicer as early as
August, letting you know what your monthly payment will be.

You’ll be able to visit your account on your servicer’s website to see your
payment amount once your disclosure or bill has been sent. Log in to find your
servicer.
Make your payment.

When: In October
If using autopay, make sure your linked bank account has sufficient funds by the
due date.

If not using autopay, use your servicer’s website to make a payment. Log in to
find your servicer.
Check if you qualify for a type of loan forgiveness.

When: Anytime
There are forgiveness options for people who work in public service, people who
can’t pay due to a disability, and people who were defrauded by their school.

Explore forgiveness programs.

TEMPORARY RELIEF: FORBEARANCE AND DEFERMENT

Still can't afford to make student loan payments? You may need to apply for
forbearance or deferment, which temporarily lower or pause your payments. But
keep in mind that forbearance and deferment have pros and cons financially. Your
loan servicer can help you understand your options.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I was transferred to a new loan servicer during the payment pause?

Make sure you’ve set up your online account with your new loan servicer and that
your new servicer has your up-to-date contact info.

Not sure which servicer your loans were transferred to? Log in to your
Dashboard.

If you can’t log in, call us at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) for loan
servicer information.

How do I find out what my interest rate will be after the 0% interest rate ends?

For most borrowers, your interest rate will be the same as it was before the 0%
interest began.

But some borrowers will find their interest rate has changed. For example, your
interest rate may have changed if you consolidated your loans during the payment
pause.

Contact your loan servicer for your exact interest rate. You may also be able to
log in to your loan servicer’s website to find this information.

My monthly student loan payment will be too high, and I can’t afford it. What
can I do to lower it?

You may be able to lower your monthly student loan payment by enrolling in an
income-driven repayment (IDR) plan. Under an IDR plan, payments are based on
your income and family size. Loan Simulator can help you compare plans.

Apply for an IDR plan and select the box to be placed on the repayment plan that
will provide you with the lowest monthly payment.

Still can’t afford to make student loan payments? You may need to apply for
forbearance or deferment, which temporarily lower or pause your payments. But
keep in mind that forbearance and deferment have pros and cons financially. Your
loan servicer can help you understand your options.
