Frequently Asked Questions Get Support IS THIS PAGE FOR ME? This page is for borrowers who will be restarting payments after the COVID-19 payment pause. Are you entering repayment for the first time? Switch to our page about repaying student loans for the first time. The content is similar but tailored to your situation. Are any of your loans in default? Switch to our page about the Fresh Start for loans in default. WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW? * Your first payment will be due in October 2023. You’ll get your bill, with your payment amount and due date, at least 21 days before your due date. * Don’t wait until you get your first bill to start preparing. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Recommended Action Instructions Update your contact information. When: Now (June) Update contact info on StudentAid.gov. Also update your contact info on your servicer’s website. Log in to find your servicer. Explore affordable repayment plans. When: Before August Compare repayment plans with Loan Simulator. An income-driven repayment (IDR) plan may be a more affordable option because it adjusts your payment amount based on your income and family size. For your payment amount to be adjusted before your first bill, apply for an IDR plan as soon as possible. Apply for an IDR plan. If on an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, consider recertifying early. When: Before August If you were on an IDR plan before the payment pause, you’ll have at least 6 months to recertify your income after the payment pause ends. Normally this has to be done each year. However, you may want to recertify for a lower payment if your income has gone down or your family size has increased. For your payment amount to be adjusted before your first bill, recertify as soon as possible. Recertify your IDR plan. Enroll (or reenroll) in autopay. When: Before August Autopay is optional, but if you choose autopay, you’ll save 0.25% on your interest rate. On autopay, you'll get a reminder ahead of each withdrawal. Sign up for autopay on your servicer's website. If you were enrolled in autopay before the payment pause, you likely need to reenroll. Log in to find your servicer. Find out what your monthly payment amount will be. When: August or September Your monthly bill in September will contain your payment amount. You also may receive a communication called a “disclosure” from your servicer as early as August, letting you know what your monthly payment will be. You’ll be able to visit your account on your servicer’s website to see your payment amount once your disclosure or bill has been sent. Log in to find your servicer. Make your payment. When: In October If using autopay, make sure your linked bank account has sufficient funds by the due date. If not using autopay, use your servicer’s website to make a payment. Log in to find your servicer. Check if you qualify for a type of loan forgiveness. When: Anytime There are forgiveness options for people who work in public service, people who can’t pay due to a disability, and people who were defrauded by their school. Explore forgiveness programs. TEMPORARY RELIEF: FORBEARANCE AND DEFERMENT Still can't afford to make student loan payments? You may need to apply for forbearance or deferment, which temporarily lower or pause your payments. But keep in mind that forbearance and deferment have pros and cons financially. Your loan servicer can help you understand your options. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What if I was transferred to a new loan servicer during the payment pause? Make sure you’ve set up your online account with your new loan servicer and that your new servicer has your up-to-date contact info. Not sure which servicer your loans were transferred to? Log in to your Dashboard. If you can’t log in, call us at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) for loan servicer information. How do I find out what my interest rate will be after the 0% interest rate ends? For most borrowers, your interest rate will be the same as it was before the 0% interest began. But some borrowers will find their interest rate has changed. For example, your interest rate may have changed if you consolidated your loans during the payment pause. Contact your loan servicer for your exact interest rate. You may also be able to log in to your loan servicer’s website to find this information. My monthly student loan payment will be too high, and I can’t afford it. What can I do to lower it? You may be able to lower your monthly student loan payment by enrolling in an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan. Under an IDR plan, payments are based on your income and family size. Loan Simulator can help you compare plans. Apply for an IDR plan and select the box to be placed on the repayment plan that will provide you with the lowest monthly payment. Still can’t afford to make student loan payments? You may need to apply for forbearance or deferment, which temporarily lower or pause your payments. But keep in mind that forbearance and deferment have pros and cons financially. Your loan servicer can help you understand your options.
