Back-to-school season is in full swing; alongside the Old Navy commercials and
backpack sales are a flood of artificial intelligence (AI) learning tools,
released just in time for the fall semester.

On Wednesday, education publisher McGraw Hill joined the trend with two
generative AI features for students and teachers: AI Reader and Writing
Assistant. The optional tools, now integrated with the company's existing
platforms, aim to personalize students' learning experiences and help educators
better support them.

free)

AI Reader provides college students with interactive help from within McGraw
Hill's eBook platform. The feature "lets students highlight specific text and
ask for alternative explanations, simpler language or a quick quiz to test their
knowledge," the press release explains. The AI Reader aims to provide a deeper
level of accessibility and engagement with course material.

Designed to foster "more flexible, inquiry-based learning experiences," AI
Reader is available today for select eBooks via McGraw Hill Connect and McGraw
Hill Go, two of the company's digital learning platforms.

Writing Assistant, developed for grades six through 12, provides students with
targeted guidance as they get comfortable with short-form writing. Embedded in
online course material, the tool gives students real-time feedback as they
complete assignments.

According to the release, Writing Assistant also lets teachers provide
personalized help to more students while reducing the administrative workload.
The tool can also help educators track students' progress. Writing Assistant
will be beta-tested in specific school districts starting this fall. The tool
will live within the company's Actively Learn and Achieve3000 Literacy
programs.

"These new GenAI tools have been developed with the same careful research,
planning and testing that we require for all McGraw Hill products, so educators
and learners can feel reassured that they are high-quality and effective, and
safely guard student data and privacy," said McGraw Hill CEO Simon Allen in the
announcement.

AI Reader and Writing Assistant are the first generative AI tools McGraw Hill
has built into its learning products. This release is part of a growing trend
among publishers and tech companies, including Pearson, Adobe, and OpenAI, to
create AI-enabled tools for learning environments as more educational
institutions embrace emerging technology.
