Republican lawmakers on Thursday ramped up their criticism of President Joe
Biden’s handling of the American withdrawal from Afghanistan, following news
that U.S. troops and Afghans had been killed in attacks at Kabul’s airport.

Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, who became the No. 3 House Republican in May,
offered the following harsh words in a tweet:

“ ‘Joe Biden has blood on his hands. … He is unfit to be Commander-in-Chief.’ ”

— Rep. Elise Stefanik

Also among the Republicans blasting Biden were Rep. Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin,
who said Thursday’s “tragedy is the direct result of the failure of this
incompetent withdrawal plan.” In addition, Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska said: “You
are the Commander-in-Chief, sir; reverse course and fight for our people.”

At least 60 Afghans and 12 U.S. service members were killed by suicide bombers
and gunmen outside Kabul airport, according to American officials.

Biden on Thursday delayed by a day his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister
Naftali Bennett as he met with his national security team on the situation
Afghanistan. He was due to give a speech at 5 p.m. Eastern.

Biden’s approval rating has fallen this month and stood at 47% as of Thursday,
while disapproval of his performance was at 49%, according to
a RealClearPolitics average of polls. Analysts have said Biden’s waning
popularity helps Republicans look increasingly well-positioned to make gains in
next year’s midterm elections.

Some Democrats have criticized Biden as well, but other members of his party
have come to his defense in recent days. Veteran strategist James Carville spoke
up for the president in an MSNBC interview on Wednesday night.

“There’s no elegant way to lose a war. We lost this war 15 years ago. All Joe
Biden was doing was just telling us what time it is,” Carville said.

U.S. stocks DJIA, 0.65% lost ground Thursday, with the S&P 500 SPX, 0.81%
pulling back from the prior day’s record close.
